Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Dear Apple,

I have an issue with the iPhone 4 that I was unable to rectify by exchanging it for another one. I have consulted the support forum and have not found a definitive answer, although I tried the advice of other users.

The issue is that when I am talking on the phone, it's possible for my face to press buttons. What happens is that I make a call, hold the phone to my ear and within moments if my face touches the screen, it results in pressing MUTE, HANG UP and SPEAKER PHONE. It appears the proximity sensor is very sensitive and that the phone display goes from black/off to on.

What I am concerned with mostly, is that I have repeatedly sought answers and have even exchanged my phone, only to continue to have the same problem without anyone acknowledging whether this is normal operation, a bug in the hardware or a bug in the software. While that may not yet be determined, I would appreciate the courtesy of being updated on this matter.

Sincerely,
Matt

I have had my i4 since day one. The proximty issue has been a continuing issue.
It seems to happen if you have any movement while using the phone. If I plan it hard against my face the issue is less likely happen. Never had this issue with 2G or 3G or 3GS phones.
We need a quick fix for this problem. No other issues except the crappy 3G coverage in my neighborhood but thats another can of worms

Almost 70,000 views on this topic and no official word from Apple about this problem. That is nothing less than absolute terrible customer service and there is no excuse for it. At the very least, Apple could issue a statement saying that they're investigating the reports.

Verizon is about to get my business in two weeks if this trend from Apple is not reversed in a hurry. Make no mistake, the reason I will go to Verizon is entirely Apple's fault. I've had annoyances with AT&T over the last 16 months, but Steve Jobs' cocky attitude combined with Apple's failure to deliver on the most basic functions of this "brilliant" product lead me to want to take my business elsewhere.

Just giving my vote...having same problem as everyone else. Previously owned 3G and 3GS with NEVER (1) hold or speakerphone enable. I can deal with the antenna issue...although 3G data is much slower than my 3GS...but the sensitive prox. sensor is really annoying me. I hope the software update addresses this or I will have to take up Steve Jobs on his 30-Day return statement that I just saw on Yahoo's front page. Good luck all.

Not limited to US customers - here in the UK Apple refuse to acknowledge the issue as other than with myself. Just restoring and setting up as a new phone - no stock around here and i'm not driving 2 hours to get to the nearest Apple Store in the hope of replacement stock being available, just to find out it has the same issues. I guess this is just a vote from across the pond to emphasise the impact of this problem.

Hi everyone,

I had the proximity issue too.
Found a solution that worked for myself and other in a previous post
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11744027&#11744027

Goto settings, general, and reset, and reset all settings
It will wipe out your wireless setup settings, but it restored my proximity sensor and others.

Good luck

This worked for me.

This is a really annoying bug. My cheek hung up on tons of people.

just noticed something else besides the range and speed on the ip4 sensor....

noticed that if you are on a call and the phone auto-lock time elapses it will light and initiate the call screen. not really sure if this has anything to do with the screen sporadically coming out of mute and activating even though you are on a call but just wanted to add it ... maybe if Apple is watching this forum they can add this to the possible reasons for whatever is going wrong.

I had my auto-lock timeout set to 1 minute. not sure if that auto-lock engaging has anything to do with the screen randomly becoming active.. hmmm... if anybody else has any further info regarding this, please post...

Wow, this post has almost more views than the entire original 2G iPhone forum

I wish Apple would say something and at least tell us they are working on it...

I think this issue is much worse than the signal issue. At least with that, you can buy a case..

I just received my 4th yes "FOURTH" phone from Apple today and am in the process of setting up as a new phone and Apple said the hope it will resolve the issue. The first three came from the same Apple store and I am hopping they just got a bad batch. Fingers crossed!

Nope still an issue and on the phone with Apple now. Apple is about ready to get this piece of crap back!!
