Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

My following experience with Apple about the proximity issue:

Day before launch: Receive my iPhone 4 and hardly notice proximity issues, but I did have a few hangups. I thought this was my fault. Not worried about the issue.

Launch Day: I go to the apple store with my brother for his iPhone 4 (he thought it would be faster than the mail). I start to notice more issues with the phone. I KNOW it is now not my fault. I go back to the store later when it is packed and contact someone from the Genius Bar and tell them what is going on. She swaps the phone out immediately, even though she couldn't reproduce the results for herself, which I thought was weird. I go home and restore the phone from a backup and I still experience problems. Now I'm upset and frustrated. The phone was pushing other buttons 10-15 times in a 10 min call because the phone would relit up.

Day after launch: I figured out that it is probably my backup, so I restore phone and set up as new phone. No luck and I'm angrier.

Day 2 or 3 after launch: After reading blogs and other internet articles, I go into Settings > General > Reset All Settings. Still nothing. Helped a little, but not long enough. I try to ask my brother if he has issues, but he says his phone is fine and that this issue is probably in my head. Now I'm beginning to go a little crazy.

Day 7: I decide to call Apple. The woman said it was her "first time hearing about this issue and I need to talk to my supervisor". Supervisor takes over call and tells me to restore and set up as new phone again. If that didn't work, they suggested another swap. Guess what? Didn't work. I'm now begging Apple to release information about an update.

Day 8 or 9ish: Apple announce an update! And it has absolutely nothing to do with my problem, of course. Sooooo, I make that fateful Genius Appt.

Day 12: Yes I had to wait three days with this painstaking problem because they had no appointments because everyone has problems! I go to the Apple Store and of course the genius bar lady with pink hair says "I'm going to try to restore it with my iOS4 software because I know its not corrupted" Great, I bet I'll see you in 3 hours......3 hours later, I come back to the Apple Store and track down that lady. Of course now, I don't have an appointment, so I'm treated like the plague. She tells me that they are currently out of 32 gb iPhones and I need to go to the next mall in my county and pick one up. She calls ahead so I'm "guaranteed" one. I get there and they go into the back after I gave them my name and bring out a box with a new iPhone inside. I pull out my ip4 and they notice that they were told to get a 32 gb 3GS and they have no more ip4 replacements. So, they come up with the brilliant idea to do a trade, in which I return my phone and then re-purchase a new one. Soon, they realize this will be my second replacement phone and I can't return to an Apple Store if I bought from the internet. A genius bar guy comes out claiming he had the same problem after I asked to talk to the manager. He said he fixed it the night before by doing a DFU restore. So, he tries it and I come home and set up as new phone. (Note: after I mentioned my problem everyone at the Apple Store claims they have the same problem and there simply is not a fix for it yet) They reserve a new swap phone for me and tell me Apple will call me when it comes in. Proximity issue still exists. I feel embarrassed that I backed Apple all these years and they don't even have the backbone to say there is a problem.

Day 15: I decide to call Apple and ask if my name is on a list for a swap phone and when I will receive it. They tell me that I'm pretty far down on the list and I tell them I am going out of the country for the weekend and will have no phone service, so I wanted to resolve this ASAP. They tell me to come pick up the phone. I go and after a few long blank stares of confusion, I get my new iPhone 4.

Day 16: I'm on hold with Garmin technical support and still have proximity sensor issues.

Long story short: The proximity sensor doesn't work, they need an update and I already sold my iPhone 3G and 3GS on eBay. Goodbye reliability.

When you say "everyone at the Apple Store" has the problem did you mean employees or customers? Approx. how many? Can you elaborate?
