Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Here is a temp FIX for the proximity sensor issue

When you are on a phone call put the APPLE HEADPHONE provided in the box on the headphone jack now Press the wake/Sleep button on the top this should now lock the screen while you are on a active phone call now take off the headphone jack and continue talking......

and if you all like this idea please do me a favor Please leave apple a feedback regarding this proximity sensor issue so they are forced to address the problem please tell everyone to do this as well who ever is facing the problem here is the link

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

maybe if they get lot of feedback reports on the proximity sensor they will do something so please guys keep on sending feedback till they address this issue

Thank you.

You really belive it can be fixed by software ?!
May be someone have impression that it can be done by changing the sensetivity of the sensor through the firmware ? Not at ALL ! The issue is at the coplex of reasons. One is the location of the sensor now . It does not allow to have it at correct sensitivity since it will be then other way arround when you try to push some buttons you will have to put your fingers on top of the sensor and nowhere else. If it works anywhere else on top of the screen we will have the same effect as we have now , when screen never get dark.
Instead of changing location possibly it will be helpfull the perforation of the front glass at the area where the sensor is. It will change the specific reaction at the specific area.
No way ( under no conditions ) this can be completely fixed by firmware sensetivity ajustment.
All the phones sold by now WILL BE REPLAICED , when the booming sale is over.

Your kidding, right. I respect your opinion but I believe you are absolutely wrong, respectfully. It's software and it can be addressed by software. Give Apple a chance to provide a software fix and then say it does not work. Do you honestly think they would not have tested this and known that it would not work... come one. People found these things lying around before they were officially released. It had some field testing and I think the design flaw would have been identified.

We have been giving apple a chance since June 23 and they are still lying about it. Maybe you haven't had the opportunity to visit a genius bar yet, or call tech support, but they all deny the problem. Some of us want to get this resolved before the 30 day return window is up. I can't possibly understand how you could be defending apple at this point?

I bought the phone on release day and only noticed the problem into the second week. I suspect this is because it was a new phone and i didnt want to hold it too close and get the screen smudged.

Now that I'm more comfortable with the phone I use it like i did my old 3g (pressed close to my face). Getting all the problems as everyone else, cutting people off, putting them on hold, mute etc... very annoying.

Went the the Genius bar (this needs to be renamed to the clueless bar) and they said they hadnt heard of it but nevertheless replaced my phone.

Phone 2 has the same issues. I will be returning my phone on Monday and getting my £500 back. If apple fix the problem I will buy it again but dont want to risk them not being able to fix it.

Yup. Exactly what is going on with my (second) iP4.
I thought this one was behaving better until I had to actually make an extended tech call today... I put the guy on mute, even though I was REALLY trying to keep it pressed against my right ear properly.
This is freaking INSANE. I am away on vacation until the 15. Really no point in attempting another swap until i get home... super annoyed & disappointed.

I have fully explained already why it is impossible to change it via software.
Unreasonable optimizm will not help. Not this month and not next month and not in one year those phones witch are sold now can be fixed via software. Evanturally they all be replaced. But now apple is busy with selling compain so the will sell as many as they can first and then start replaicment with dieferent design phone.
Estimated time is September- Octgober.

Had my iphone replaced last night. My 3rd. Was told there was nothing wrong with the phone. It was working just fine. Gave them a hard time about my face dialing. At first they were not going to give me another phone. This was the first time anyone came in with this problem is what they told me. Got a little heated and two other Genius guys got involved and they give me another phone. One of the guys told me it is totally software and would be taken care of with the software update. They seemed to open up about the problem a little. They claim there is nothing wrong with the hardware - it is a software problem. They also told me it would be addressed with the update coming out. (about 2 weeks)

Been having the exact same issue. Just brought home a replacement handset this morn and am in the middle of a restore. Will let you know if I see any improvement.

Also.. (although this isnt the iPad area of the forum), I purchased an Ipad around a month ago - I've had problems with this too.. constantly forgets my wifi password - I'm talking every 5 mins. I'm mentioning this because I've spent almost £1000 on two Apple products in the last month, and both have serious usability issues. Its disappointing to see a company like this drop the ball so badly.

Update: Just been to the Apple store.............. and........

One of the Genius's just admitted that they know about the problem. I asked him to re-iterate what he meant by 'they' and he said Apple know about it. He was adamant that it will be fixed by a software update. I said that this is my second iPhone 4 and that I want to return it unless Apple can guarantee it will be resolved.

The manager of the store then stepped in as the conversation was getting a bit heated.... he also said it is a software issue but contradicted the Genius by saying Apple do not officially recoginise it as an issue. He did still say it would be fixed by a software update.

In the UK, the returns policy is 14 days not 30 as in the US. Even though my phone is now 1 day over the return window they will still return it if I go in on Monday. I cannot trust that this will be fixed in the next release and as Apple have not re-assured enough. I will have to go back to my Nokia 6100 which works.

Apple have obviously told all managers of stores to tell their staff to keep quiet about this issue. It is dissapointing that the staff cannot be frank and honest because they are genuinely helpful and want to say what's on their mind but cant. Apple have clearly failed in testing this 'calling' - most important aspect of this device properly. It is a complete failure on their part and I hope they dont make these mistakes again.

I will return the phone on Monday and re-buy one IF they fix the issue.
