Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

How many IP4 users having this sensor problem are going to return there phone after the 30 day trial period is up?

If there is not a fix or at least a official word from apple I am for sure returning my phone and going back to my 3gs

I am on my 5th phone still having the problem.
Has anyone successfully returned there phone to apple and got a new working one without the problem?

I am giving Apple six more days to keep my business in terms of cell phones. My wife is using my old iPhone 3G so I can't get that back. If Apple has not acknowledged the problem and/or released a fix by next Thursday morning, off to Verizon and the Droid X I go. I refuse to continue to use a product when its manufacturer has clearly decided that they would rather talk down to me like I'm a child who doesn't know how to use devices properly instead of admitting their own screw ups.

I've been having this issue as well. It's really working my last nerve. I assumed it was a display issue, as the screen activates while in iPod mode as well, but it's been happening ever since iOS4. On my 3GS and my 4, and I'm about at my wits end.

I think I'll go tell the hippys at the Apple Store exactly what I think of their service tomorrow..

I about to go for the droid because of this proximity issue!

Take a look at this before you go...

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/tech-issues-bug-reports-suggestions/

4 hours battery life, dead phones, apps that won't load, etc..... so you think the grass is greener?

Do some Droid phones have issues? Of course they do... it's also an evolving platform. Do any of those issues disrupt the devices ability to perform it's basic function reliably (i.e. make phone calls), no they do not. Note as well that you also have over 60 different pieces of Android hardware to choose from to avoid problems or get the exact features you want.

Most people buy an iPhone because it's a Phone. (or supposed to be) The gentleman further up this thread who couldn't board a plane because his iPhone 4 couldn't get a connection to show the electronic tickets, and ended up using his wife's 3GS (standing beside him) was about as clear as it gets. Quirks are one thing, but several fundamental flaws that disrupt its ability to be used even somewhat reliably is a big problem.

i returned my ip4 2 days ago for the proximity sensor and my new ip4 doesnt have the problem. it used to do what everyone else reported plus when i received a text, the phone would turn on. but all is good with mine now. im not sure what i did but as soon as i got it, i went to settings, restored network setting then did a cold boot then i called my voicemail, waited for the operator to say "press * to disconnect". i never changed to auto brightness or the level. all is well so far

can you check your serial number and tell us when your phone was manufactured?

Okay I seriously believe there is an issue but I really am starting to doubt the magnitude when people start saying return the phone, buy a droit, etc. It almost seems planned and directed. I have the basic issue that the sensor turns the screen on when it hits my ear canal. That's it. If I move the ear speaker a little, no problems. If Apple increases the sensitivity, all will be well. I'm starting to wonder if we are not seeing a possible trolling issue.

My phone is great and I have no issues fir the most part. I honestedly and without disrespect wonder if some of these issues are exaggerated. The network issue quite the opposite... My iPhone 4 far outperforms wife's 3Gs.

There is no trolling issue. The main issue here is that several (some might even say "many") Apple supporters and proponents like myself are disappointed by the absolutely terrible customer service Apple is providing on this proximity sensor issue.

I am not accustomed to calling AppleCare, getting one answer or justification for a problem; and then hanging up and calling back to get a completely different answer from another advisor. That is unprofessional and a terrible way to run any company. It's problems like that that have made me abandon products and companies in the past. That's why I'm so frustrated that Apple seems to be heading that direction.

Android is the only major competitor to the iPhone at present. That's why some of us (including myself) are seriously considering switching to it.

I guess possibly you do work for Apple. My prior post to this was deleted. I'm done here. Good luck all.

Funny how Apple can delete posts but nobody can give us an update on what is going on with the sensors.. lol..

@TrentP - Thanks buddy. I think you figured out what the problem is. Hope Apple fixes it. Maybe you even work for them. Don't really care as long as it gets fixed. For those of you that don't know what his post was, search the threads. I think he has figured it out.
