Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Yeah no kidding riverson. How could you possibly start to doubt the magnitude. Don't play into that crap and don't feed it to apple. I know five people who ordered the iphone 4. Guess how many are now on their second iphone and still experiencing the issue? 5!!!!! All five of us can't make a phone call without muting people. One of my calls earlier today looked like I was putting on a firework show.

I'm sure android fanboys could come in here and do some trolling and rally a couple hundred posts, but not thousands of posts and 100,000 + views? Get real.

I guess possibly you do work for Apple. My prior post to this was deleted. I'm done here. Good luck all.

Okay I seriously believe there is an issue but I really am starting to doubt the magnitude when people start saying return the phone, buy a droit, etc. It almost seems planned and directed. I have the basic issue that the sensor turns the screen on when it hits my ear canal. That's it. If I move the ear speaker a little, no problems. If Apple increases the sensitivity, all will be well. I'm starting to wonder if we are not seeing a possible trolling issue.

My phone is great and I have no issues fir the most part. I honestedly and without disrespect wonder if some of these issues are exaggerated. The network issue quite the opposite... My iPhone 4 far outperforms wife's 3Gs.

I just got back from returning my iPhone 4 to the Apple Store. It was pretty hassle-free, but they did want me to have someone look at the phone first - which would have meant coming back or waiting 3 hours. To reactivate my iPhone 3G I had to go to the AT&T store to get a new sim card.

The proximity issue was annoying me, my family, and my friends. Plus, I have had 6 dropped calls (call failed) during the two weeks I had the phone. I didn't have that many in two years with my iPhone 3G. The tipping point came last night when a call was dropped at my house, where I have never had an issue.

I might try again in a month or two when it looks like these issues, which to me seem hardware-related, have been resolved.

For what its worth I wanted to share with all of you that :

I got a call back from the manager at the local apple store this afternoon because of the poor feedback I gave for my visit last friday. They replaced by phone but the second unit still has the same proximity sensor issue

The manager was very kind and told me she totally understands the frustration and apple is aware of the problem and IT IS software related and a fix is coming soon so lets all keep our fingers crossed.

I told her I have had all generations of the iphone from the 1st day and the iphone 4 has been a total diaster for me. I am running our of my 30 day return window and will have no option but to return the phone if the fix is not out by next weekend.

So my decision at this point is to wait until the next weekend and if no fix in place return the phone. I will be very sad but have no other option.

Go to the store again and speak to the manager. They will have to give you a refund if you kick up a fuss. That's what i did and will get a refund on Monday.

Apple have designed a faulty product. We are the guinie pigs. Why are we paying up to £600 to test a phone that they should have never released in the first place.

Everyone here who is saying 'im going to stick it out' should rethink. No company should hold consumers over a barrel. People have worked hard to afford to pay for these devices so expect perfection. Apple used to be a good alternative to Microsoft/Windows but now that they are getting popular they are clearly getting too big for their own boots. They cannot handle this situation instead of having the bottle to admit faults.

Ok. I'm on my second Iphone4. The 1st one had issues with the sensor and the 2nd one is really bad.I called up tech support and they told me that there was no problem with the sensor and i was the 1st person calling them!!! They however told me to try all the fixes that are there on this forum so how come nobody has a problem but they surely know about all the fixes...
Finally they told me to go to the apple store and get the phone replaced.. I told the technical rep that there are close to a 100 pages of postings on their own forum complaining about the same issue and they told me to disregard the forum..
Man are they blind or do they want to behave like an ostrich with their head buried underground..

Wow, I'm sorry you had to pay so much.. I paid $220 for mine.. With the exchange rate factored in, you paid like 4x as much as I did. No wonder you're righteously ****** off. I'm just mildly annoyed. And I talk about raising **** at the Apple Store or switching to a Palm or Droid, but my iPhone is here to stay.

I guess it's because of people like me that people like you get thoroughly hosed... sorry man... If I was as invested in it as you are, I'd be singing a whole different tune.

I always wondered why some companies (like Apple and Microsoft) have forums for their customers to openly discuss problems they are having, and then ignore it like it doesn't exist?? Sure, they have a feedback system (which I'm sure people are blowing up right now), but never reveal the amount or nature of feedback they get (especially, if it's negative feedback).

That's how I know it's BS when a tech says they never heard of the issue. Does Apple's PR department, not forward 'feedback' to the techs to see if their is actually a 'real' problem or are thousands of people making up the issue? Does the tech department not have a system in place, that when a person calls with a particular issue, it's catalogued for future reference when somebody else calls?

they have all of these tools. From a legal perspective they have to be careful what they say. Admitting a fault means they have to commit to fix it. They will only admit a problem once they have a fix, until then they will be very vague on the issue and people's 14 day (UK) 30 day (US) return periods will expire.

Trust me, Apple know about this issue.

I have been using an iPhone since it was first released three years and have upgraded every year. This year I upgraded to the iPhone 4 after standing in line 6 hours to buy it.

I am very disappointed with this phone! Dropped calls in my house several times a day (my past iPhones dropped calls maybe a few times a week). Also, the screen keeps turning back on while I am talking on the phone and then my cheek either hangs up on the call, puts on mute or calls another person. This happens during almost every call!

I have 5 friends that have the new iPhone 4 and they ALL have the same problems so it is not me or my phone.

I can't believe Apple released such a horrible product! Mr. Jobs should hold his head down in shame.

If there is not a software update released soon to remedy these problems I am returning this phone and will NEVER buy or recommend another Apple product again.

APPLE FIX YOUR PHONE!

Raise your hand if you really believe that Apple doesn't read these forums. . .

Not me. As someone who has worked in IT support for almost 15 years, I know how much I would've killed to have a resource like this over the years. If you're Apple and you think there might be an issue, the first place you'd go to gauge how big of an issue it is is to the forums that YOU host. Why would Apple bother hosting forums that they gain no input from? That makes no logical sense.

Yes, they read the forums. If they don't admit to reading them, they can continue to act surprised when we call again and again to mention an issue that Apple hasn't officially acknowledged yet. Simple as that.

I loaded IOS 4 on my 3G over a week before I received my IP4 and never once had the problem on it.

I'm giving Apple until the 23rd to fix this otherwise it's going right back to BestBuy.

Can I please ask a question????

Are there any iphone 3G or 3GS users who have OS4 software installed and are having this issue???

This could narrow it down to software.
