Roll Back to 3.1.3 - OS 4.0 is for the BIRDS

Let's open the discussions on rolling BACK to 3.1.3 - who has found a source with reliable information on how to make this happen? I lost my apps, my text messages, emails.. so many things - but worst of all, my iPhone is cripplingly S L O W - There must be some way to wipe it and go back to 3.1.3. Surely using time machine - we can get our old .ipsw file back or SOMETHING?

I was able to make this downgrade today following these instructions:
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/06/downgrade-iphone-3g-3gs-ios-4-gm-to-os-3-1-3/

I downloaded the 3.1.3 version from here

http://www.techhail.com/iphone/direct-download-links-iphone-os-3-1-3-for-iphone- and-ipod-touch/3151

follow the instructions carefully. Note that you will need to have recboot already installed at the end.
It is great to have my iphone responsive again. it was terrible with os4

I have to say... I finally found the solution. What I did was restore the iphone and choose, "set up as new iphone" instead of restoring my settings. Once I did that I had to manually re-setup all my apps and sync what I wanted. After I did this, my iphone 3G is functioning much better now even with the ios4. Still frustrated with apple about this, but when I'm wrong, I'm wrong. This did work for me. I hope it works for you! Tony

Tony - I am with you. I jumped on the iphone wagon when it came out. The headphone jacket got wet once and apple made me buy a brand new iphone for over $600 (since my contract was not up). The phone has always been USELESS. I can be standing IN an ATT store and it will drop calls. They have replaced it, but still doesn't work. I am in NYC and I cannot even use my phone in my apartment or on the street. If I am in a cab and drive through union square it drops the calls right away. PIECE OF CRAP. I have actually had real emergencies before and my phone can't make a call. I have actually had to use a PAY PHONE. How ridiculous. The main purpose of a cell phone is for emergencies. My fiance is a analyst on wall street and when people tell him they want to get ATT or an iphone he says "you want to see how great the service is?" he puts the speakerphone on and dials my number and it either drops the call right away or goes straight to voicemail. We are a total "apple family" and have multiple macbook pros, ipads, desktops, ipods, shuffles etc etc

ANYWAY ... pardon my rant. But I just upgraded as well. Now, not only does the phone work like crap, but the rest of the iphone is useless. It turn the iphone and it takes a good 10 seconds before the screen even switches. It takes a good ten seconds (if it works at all) to go into the ipod and open text messages. Anyway, I have had it. I took it into ATT and they just tell me to deal with it. Well FOCKER Out!

I'm following the live press conference online now.

Steve Jobs has not mentioned a singe word yet about the iOS4 Operating System & 3G issues we are all facing--just the antenna issue for iPhone 4. Why????

He has invited Apple execs, Tim Cook and Bob Mansfield, to join him on stage now for Q&A. So far, not one question from the press about how iOS4 has messed up the 3G. Why????

However, Jobs did say Apple is an engineering company and he "loves us" (customers). He also said that the Bloomberg article is "total ********." Connie G, whose name is on the byline of the Bloomberg article, Jobs referred to, then asked a question of the panel about the free iPhone 4 case offer after Jobs made this statement about her article, but said absolutely nothing about her article. I guess she either stands behind her story in silence or decided to "let it go."

Apple needs to show us their "love" by standing behind the 3G, just as the 3GS and iPhone 4, and engineering a true fix to their software negatively affecting their product (3G) or this "loved" customerI will let them go.

Well, even though the phone does work better since restoring it "as a new phone", it's still not quite right. It does respond much better now, but many apps still crash regularly. The browser, for example, crashes about 25% of the time. It's as if there are serious memory leaks in this OS. Apple has to do something here. I spent big money on this stuff, and I'm getting almost no help at all from ATT/Apple. Give me new software! or give me a new phone! I've had it. I'm ready for Android, getting closer day by day!!! ... Tony

Fortunately, I had my 3G replaced yesterday at the Apple store in Miami, Florida with another 3G model in a sealed never-opened box which had Os 3.1.3 installed.

Until, Apple fixes this problem, I will stay with 3.1.3. In fact, as soon as I came home and synced with iTunes and it asked me if I wanted to download and install 4.0.1., I happily clicked "NO" and the box to never ask me again.

It all works great again and I wish you all the same success.

Very simple: Because Apple NEEDS TO START SUPPORTING IT! My 3G is slow and won't even run several of my apps without quickly crashing. I'll bet the problem is the 3G's paltry 128 mb of RAM (compared to 256 and 512 for the 3GS and 4, respectively). Apple should have given us a warning; I never would have upgraded. Apple needs to start supporting rollback to 3.1.3. I'm willing to go the third-party route, but the last backup I have (pre-iOS 4) is almost 8 months old, and apparently you can't restore any settings, text msgs, etc., from a iOS 4 backup to a 3.1.3 installation.

^ This. We shouldn't have to go to the hackers to get our less-than-2yr-old product performing satisfactorily. That Apple doesn't support downgrading suggests that Apple wants to use the poor 3G performance on iOS4 to drive 3G owners to a new iPhone.
