Anyone else feel that iOS 4 has made their ipod touch 2G very sluggish? screen rotations are slow(delayed) and iBooks is totally unusable. ibooks crashes often. and how do you lock screen orientation?

Ok to check if you can downgrade or not go to *Settings -> General -> About* and look at the device Model. If it starts with MC you *CANNOT DOWNGRADE UNLESS YOU HAVE SHSH*. Sorry but it is impossible, never going to happen, live with iOS 4 or buy a Zune HD. However if you its starts with MB downgrading is extremely easy. Google it.

Oh and by the way I'm running 4.2.1 on my Ipod Touch 2G and it's perfect. It is as good as 3.1.3 and everything is really smooth. The only downside is the loss of capacity due to the larger firmware. For a device that has a 500MHz processor and only 128mb of RAM it is the smoothest device I have seen. I know I have a HTC with same specs and it is so laggy that its not even funny.

Yeah ibooks crashes on my upgraded ipod 2g. It used to run on 3.1.3 I believe. Apple has become completely ridiculous in this respect. They require you to upgrade, and then release upgrades that break your device. This issue only serves to legitimize the iDevice hacking community. If you want control of your own device, you have to break the rules it seems. :/

What Apple is doing called "planned obsolescence". It is also driving the momentum of its stock.

On the other note: I just ordered a Nokia N900 phone. I know it is over a year old model and has specs of iPhone 3GS, but it also has free to alter firmware and software. By now I pretty much dislike the technology big 3: Apple, Google, Microsoft.

I updated to iOS 4 the day I got my 2nd gen iPod touch. I didn't notice a difference at first, but after downloading iBooks, I found iBooks very slow. I have a TON of apps on mine. It takes forever to back up in iTunes, and I have a fast Mac and a USB 2.0 port.

I have never owned an iOS device before I updated, so I never knew what it is like for the iPod to be fast. However, I have discovered if you disable the Spotlight search COMPLETELY and reboot your device, it will be faster. Also, set the home button double-click to music- not spotlight.

If it is not faster reply to me and I will give you another suggestion. My iPod is now dramatically faster, but still not SUPER fast.

Well, all this was enough to convince me to stay at 3.1.3. Would have liked to try out iBooks, although it wasn't that impressive on the iPad as an ereader. There are a couple of other apps, too; plus folders that I'll miss, but I'd rather have a 99% capable device running fast with solid battery life than go through days of purgatory trying to trouble-shoot this!

I have a 2nd gen ipod touch running on 4.2.1 currently and let me tell you, it is SLOWW! To begin with, my ipod has been through a lot since I first got it like two summers ago (water damage, jailbreaking, restoring, etc.) and all in all, I just basically have been dealing with it. I fixed the water problem using home remedies and I had to resore after my first jailbreak. The second time I ever restored it was a month or two ago. That process was one pain in the ***. Took HOURSS and it kept failing on me, but somehow I did it and got my ipod updated to 4.2.1. My ipod got really lame really fast. To make a long story short, my ipod had -2 GB's left. Thats right, NEGATIVE 2 GIGABYTES, I am not exaggerating. And my ipod was runnings soooo slow. Safari would crash, internet based stuff was slow to load, music did not play correctly, wayy too much screen hesitations after I give it a command, it would take like 20 seconds to type a SINGLE letter. It was soo frustrating I reset it deleted a whole bunch of stuff. And just now, a few weeks ago, it has relapsed back into this annoying as **** condition. I don't even wanna use it anymore, I just frankly do not have the patience and I'm not sure if it's even worth tossing this away and purchasing a new ipod touch if Apple is just gonna make a new one half a year later with faster speed and a slightly better camera. What do you think I should do?

there is a way to go back to ios 3.1.3 after you upgrade it.
just go to start (windows 7 and vista)search (windows xp) run and type in %appdata% go to apple computer -> itunes -> software updates -> and then copy the iPod firmware restore to your desktop and then go to itunes and then plug in your ipod -> go to summary -> HOLD shift and click on restore and locate the iPod firmware restore file and open it.

*COPY THE FIRMWARE BEFORE YOU UPGRADE TO NEWER VERSION OR ELSE THE OLD ONE WILL BE DELETED*
