Audio Issues in Facetime & Video Recording

I'm having some major mic issues when using FaceTime or recording video on the iPhone 4. The sound is mainly static - you can just about hear other sounds, but it's very quiet and washed out by the static. The mic audio on calls, voice notes is fine - it's just on FaceTime and video recording.

Apple support have no idea (the agent I spoke to seemed to think it was related to my network provider and text messaging, which makes no sense whatsoever).

Anyone else had this problem? Any fixes out there?

Yea....I know. It all does not make sense that other things that utilize the speaker worked but there comes a point where I am spending way too much time troubleshooting a product that I spent good money on I just can't justify it anymore. It is such new hardware and software that there is not enough history to troubleshoot. I suggest leaving that to apple for now. Are you not close to a store?

I ordered mine from AT&T as well. I still always take mine to apple stores. You can download the apple store app and make the appointment right from the app. It very well could be software but like I was saying, why not let them fix it and in the meantime get a Replacement. I can't promise stock and they won't either but it looks to me that replacement stock is different than new phone stock. Worst case you walk away with a preorder for a new phone. So far 2 of us in this post have went back and got a new phone within 10 minutes. It was really painless. I would do it if I were you. Too much headache to be a test bed for their problem. 🙂

I'm having the same problem! Right out of the box I noticed that the mic didn't work when I put someone on speaker phone. I can hear fine but they can't hear me. Also, using Facetime and Video recording the mic doesn't work. The audio recorder that comes with the phone works fine. Go figure. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the noise cancelling mic on top. Either way I'm taking mine back for a swap.

My problem is little bit different.
My video recording does work and my speaker phone does work.

When I try to set up a face time call it says: face time connection couldn't establish and disconnects (something like it). When my friend starts face time it works but I can't hear him. He can hear me.

Anyone else noticed the problem with face time disconnects?

Hello everyone,
I have a theory about this issue with FaceTime. I had experienced the same problem where I am not getting audio but I do receive video on FaceTime. I had a similar problem using iChat on my Mac but I was able to solve it by turning off the computers' firewall feature while on call.

I believe FaceTime may be blocked/limited by the router on your network. Please check this post for more detail:

Update: iPhone 4: Using FaceTime behind a firewall

Summary

For most Wi-Fi networks, FaceTime video calling will just work. If you are on a Wi-Fi network that is behind a firewall, see below.
Products Affected

iPhone 4
About firewalls

Frequently used by corporations and educational institutions for increased security, firewalls work by blocking certain Internet traffic from entering or leaving a network.

Internet traffic moves through a firewall based on service-identification numbers that are referred to as ports. Certain ports must be open for FaceTime to work. Network administrators typically open a minimal set of network ports, allowing the traffic for approved applications to enter and leave the network while blocking other network traffic.
Ports to open

If the Wi-Fi network router that you are connected to uses a firewall or security software to restrict Internet access, contact the network administrator and reference this technical article. To use FaceTime on a restricted Wi-Fi network, port forwarding must be enabled for ports 80, 443, 3478, 4080, 5223, and 16393-16402 (UDP).

Depending on the NAT configuration for the router and network, additional ports may be used to send and receive video. Some router-specific features or configurations may interfere with FaceTime. This includes port mapping on either end, SIP dropping, or dynamic opening of media ports.

The Wi-Fi network administrator can refer to their router, firewall, or security software documentation for information on configuring port forwarding.

If you encounter issues using a Wi-Fi network, use standard Wi-Fi network troubleshooting to resolve interference and other issues.

My problem was exactly the same! My mother couldn't hear-me on FaceTime and zero sound on recorded videos.

My noise-cancelling mic on the top of the phone was covered with a sticker, something like the invisible shield but there was no hole for the mic. If you are having the same problem remove any protector or case or bumper and see if the mic hole next to the headphone hole isn't covered with something.

If the problems remains, most certainly you have a defective noise-cancelling mic.

I too experienced the same problem with FACETIME and tried EVERYTHING suggested in this forum.

I eventually discovered that EVERY time I had the problem... it was when I was trying to FACETIME someone using the SAME WIFI network. The moment I tried to FACETIME someone outside of the same WIFI network, FACETIME worked perfectly.

It worked for me... I hope it works for you!

I am having a slightly different problem. Facetime works perfectly well when I use the internal microphone in my new MacBook Pro, but the other party receives no audio signal when I am on an external phone (it does work in Skype). Then when I switch back to the internal phone there is still no audio until I reboot the computer.

This has the ring of a software issue to me.

To anyone facing this issue, this is just APPLE BEING APPLE. Not that Windows is Immune. For whatever reason (Apple knows better than you what you want and need AND YOU MUST OBEY), they made FACETIME incapable of balancing audio with other applications that have sound, including Youtube.

This reason is simple, when you use FaceTime, Apple wants you using NOTHING ELSE. So you must surrender your sound options unto Big Brother.

But there is a simple work around.

Use Skype.

When you use Skype, the sound Nazis at apple are defeated. This is the typical issue(s) surrounding Apple. It is the only reason they cannot completely dominate the computer market--their ego. They're so self obsessed that even when you use FaceTime, they have to hijack your sound.

Just use Skype.

They have a much better sound platform and it will **** Apple off. That's good enough.
