iPhone 4 periodically won't wake up

Since I activated my new phone last night, it will periodically not wake up from being locked. When I try to wake the phone up from sleep mode, I hit the home button/lock button and nothing happens. Only a hard reset seems to fix the issue, and only temporarily; it happens again 30 minutes to an hour later.

I synced the new phone from my 3G backup. I'm thinking a full restore may help -- any other ideas?

Doing a full restore and starting the phone up as a 'new iphone' (as opposed to backing it up from a previous back up) really doesn't do anything. I've heard of quite a few people with this problem who have returned their phones and got new ones, and the problem is solved, but there's also a couple of people who ended up with 2 useless phones in a row.

I don't know if this is the case for anyone else but this problem doesn't occur when it is plugged in to charge.

Hopefully iOS 4.01 will fix this issue.

I've had this problem since day one-- June 24. I went to the Apple Store on Friday and they told me to restore to a new device. I haven't had the opportunity to do that yet, as Friday night my pc was hit with a nasty virus, which I'm in the process of repairing. I thought I was the only one with a funky iPhone until I saw this thread. This morning I called Apple care and told them about this thread-- they were unaware of it-- and they told me to try to restore as new once and if that doesn't work to go to the apple store.

*The only way I have found to keep the phone from going into a coma is to keep it charging at all times.* Otherwise, even if it is off the charger for a minute it will power off and it's taking about 30 seconds of pressing hard on the power and home key to get it to come back up.

(3rd post on this thread)
My phone has been having consistent coma issues since I got it on 6/23.
Here's what I've noticed so far:
- Doesn't seem to go into coma while chargin
- Goes into coma much more often at home (wifi?) than out and about
- When in coma, it won't sync.
- When in coma, if you call the phone you get 4 rings and then voicemail - so AT&T thinks the phone is still there. But no rings or any sign of life on the phone.
- At home (where coma happens most often), it seems to get into coma more quickly if I push the Home button (to see if the phone is still alive), see the lock screen, but don't actually unlock the phone (just let it turn back off). The next time I try to press the Home button, the phone is often in coma.

Nothing conclusive so far. I've got an appt at Apple Store today.

Hi there,

as far as I can see most users experiencing this problem are in the USA. I am over here in Germany and had the same problem. I got the iphone on friday and didn't play or install much with it. Saturday morning it was dropped dead. NO reaction whatsoever I did. I had a nearly hour long call to the apple hotline and we couldn't resolve the poblem. We recieved the message when plugging the phone to the McB that there was a iphone which I should restore, during restoration it said software failure 1600 and broke up with the process. Later that day I went to the Apple Store and also no result until the phone was hanging on their Macbook and the Manager pressed some buttons unintendently. Then it awoke and ran until I went to bed. Next morning same thin, all dead. I could revive it with this: pressing the home button while plugging in the USB cable. Than the restoration message came up, when so I pressed both buttons home and on/off for more than 10 sec, after that the phone startet to reboot itself without any need of restoration. Afterwards all was fine. I changed it anyway because I think this is nothing I should have to do with a brandnew device everytime I don't pay attention to it. On sunday the dead situation occured three times during the day. On Monday and Tuesday morning once after the night. No apps have been running when I put it by side. It is a 16 GB Iphone. Today I got the replacement and can say more about its function tomorrow morning, unitl now it is working fine. As a sidenote, because I got the Iphone directly from Telekom the Apple store couldn't exchange it for one of the plenty phones which were there, because I didn't buy it at there place. For replacements of iphones bought whereever they need an extra supply which hasn't arrived yet ...
So Apple send me one directly with UPS after my second call on sunday.

I'm getting the same problem, Apple are supposedly going to replace it on Friday for me (assuming they have stock) but I'm not convinced its a hardware issue.

Can you give this a try - run something that gives you push notifications with a very long timeout (something like BeejiveIM or another instant messenger that'll keep you signed in).

I did a restore and set up as new phone on Monday which I thought solved the issue... until last night when it happened again (woke up this morning and the phone was in coma state once again). The only thing I can think of is that I've been running Beejive with Push constantly (including overnight) for the past couple of days but signed out last night and, boom, the problem came back.

Could be a coincidence but it's worth a try.
