iPhone 4 periodically won't wake up

Since I activated my new phone last night, it will periodically not wake up from being locked. When I try to wake the phone up from sleep mode, I hit the home button/lock button and nothing happens. Only a hard reset seems to fix the issue, and only temporarily; it happens again 30 minutes to an hour later.

I synced the new phone from my 3G backup. I'm thinking a full restore may help -- any other ideas?

When I visited my local Apple Store yesterday and had diagnostics run on it, the employee told me that my iPod app was prone to crashing in the background and that was the underlying cause of my occasional iPhone comas. I'm not sure if it's the actual problem (much less the cause of the comas other people on here have been experiencing), but I figured that he was being unusually precise about the cause of my comas as opposed to what I've been reading on here and he might actually know what he's talking about.

He suggested to me to restore my iPhone and see if that fixed anything. It's been over 24 hours so far and no coma, but I also haven't been receiving comas nearly as much as some users on here.

Thanks for the info about the Apple guys saying the iPod app may be to blame for the coma issue. I am now testing this making sure the app is fully closed.

It may fit with when my coma issues began on Monday as I don't think I put any music on my phone until Sunday. Still don't know why this would only cause the problem during a certain period of the day though. I would also have thought the problem would be more widespread if it was the iPod app to blame.

Anyway, 10.19am and no coma yet today, which is probably the best it has done all week. Keeping my fingers crossed! Will post again later to let you guys know if it goes into a coma.

ArturoB - Thanks for letting us know about the fact you had to get a replacement. I was going to do a full restore this weekend, but as that now doesn't seem to work I probably won't bother, as it takes ages to get everything set up again. Does the iPod theory fit with the problems you had?

Has anyone done a full restore and seen no further problem?

Well, so far, so good. This is the first full morning since Monday without the phone going into a coma.

Perhaps some others with this problem may wish to try fully closing their iPod app (ie double-clicking home, tap and hold the iPod app in the list, and then tap the red minus badge).

It may be a coincidence but like I said, it's the first time I have tried this and the first full morning with no coma.

Just a 'me too'. Sometimes goes for 20 hours without freezing, sometimes does it 5 times in 2 hours.

Haven't run the iPod app yet. Does it without having run any apps other than those at boot time.

Does it on charge or off charge.

Frankly, there's no real pattern to it, other than it does sometimes seem that it's more often when the phone is colder.

Chris.

I have had my Iphone 4 since the 24th. It has been in a coma 3 times. I have tracked it, and it occurs the morning of the third day. I have to do a hard reset and then everything is normal until 3 days later. I thought it could be due to a long time asleep, but this morning my alarm (I use my phone as my alarm) went off, and then within the 15 minutes that it when off, I tried to use is and coma. This is a 16gb coming off of a 3g restore. Apple suggested I do a full restore of the unit. Plan to do this over the weekend. Hope we have an update to IOS coming soon.

Did full restore as new phone on June 30, as AT&T manager instructed. Iphone 4 worked fine with no comas until this morning - dead on waking up. Nearest Apple store is 1-1/2 hours away in the city. VERY angry to have to drive all that way for a replacement!!!! So far we have tried every single thing to fix this posted on the Net and NOTHING has worked. Give up. Interestingly, we got TWO iphone 4s, shipped to us on June 24, and the other one is FINE with absolutely no comas!!

Just adding my experience to this growing thread. The coma issue has happened to me twice since getting my phone on June 23. It's only happened overnight and I always listen to music to go to sleep. I don't know if that has anything to do with it at all though. I'm going to wait it out to see what the first software update brings, assuming the problem doesn't get worse.

One more Me Too.

I got my phone on the 23rd. On the afternoon of the 25th, I came home, set my phone on my desk, came back about 15 minutes later, and it was dark and unresponsive. After various ineffective button-pushes, including a hard reset (power plus home buttons), I did a hard reset and held the buttons in for for some time, maybe 10 or 15 seconds. That restarted it.

And it hasn't happened since. So I'm just waiting and watching, and monitoring this thread.

For background: I set up my phone by restoring from a backup of my first-generation iPhone. I do not know which, if any, apps might have been running in the background when it went into the coma. The earbuds were not plugged in when this happened.

After my iPhone 4 went coma on me around 5-6 times a day, I had had enough and made an appointment at the Genius bar. th eguy ran some diagnostics on it and could not figure out what was wrong, but could tell I had restored it several time. So to illiminate hardware being an issue he gave me a new unit from a black box.Took it home and set it up as a new phone and restored it from old back up (originally 3G).

Its been 3 days now and, touch wood, so far so good, no coma!

Regarding warranty, here it in UK our right shouldn't be affected, so if we had further problems and the unit is still in warranty we should be ok. Anyone want to confirm?
