iPhone 4 periodically won't wake up

Since I activated my new phone last night, it will periodically not wake up from being locked. When I try to wake the phone up from sleep mode, I hit the home button/lock button and nothing happens. Only a hard reset seems to fix the issue, and only temporarily; it happens again 30 minutes to an hour later.

I synced the new phone from my 3G backup. I'm thinking a full restore may help -- any other ideas?

Hm, it occured to me a couple of days ago that I had never run iPod on this new phone, which coma'ed 5 times a day, at least.

So I ran it. And it was confused - blank screen, empty playlist, but convinced it was playing something. So I told it to start playing something that it did have, stopped it. Touch wood, it's not crashed since and it's been 48 hours since the last coma.

Very odd.

Chris.

This happened to me the last night, and it freaked me out. I have had the phone since the 2nd day it was out and didn't have any issues until then. I was looking at some photos or something and then I locked it and set it aside. The next time is picked it up, it wouldn't respond to anything! I plugged it in (thinking somehow my battery had died) and nothing happened and then I left it alone for a little while. After 5-10 min, I tried the restore thing (holding lock button and home button together) and it started up again! Hopefully Apple finds the source of this one, I don't want it to happen again.

Whilst Friday was the first day last week that I didn't get the coma issue, I decided to do a full restore on Friday evening when I knew I'd have time to get the phone set up and organised as I like it over the weekend. I even downloaded the firmware again and did an option-restore in iTunes to pick up that new download. Phone was fine until this morning when I noticed that at some point in the night it had gone into a coma again (marking the first time it has done this anywhere other than at work). As I was writing this I just noticed it has done it again!

So there you go. Another instance to add to the list of people for whom a full restore was a complete waste of time and effort. I shall just have to wait for Carphone Warehouse to contact me as soon as they have a replacement. Hoping it won't be long, but I'm not likely to get to an Apple store anytime soon so it's my only option at the moment.

Mr Pointment:

I will reply to a post in that other thread here, so that this subject can be kept in one place.

You mentioned in one post that the screen freezes for ages. Does it eventually come back on? I have always rebooted rather than wait. In case you aren't aware, you can press and hold the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds (puts the phone into DFU mode), release, then press and hold both buttons again for another 10 seconds. Your phone will then reboot.

I'm now upto 60 hours without a coma, whereas before it would never get beyond 10, and even when it did get to 10 hours, it would then make up for it 3 times in an hour.

All I did was run iPod once - I never had before. It was confused - I played some music for a couple of second. Then quit.

Will let y'all know if it makes it another day...

Still having "coma" every few days, so called Apple tech, he confirmed that if you've done (1) hard reset, (2) done restore with backup, and (3) restore as new phone without backup, and none of those worked, they consider it a Dead on Arrival! So tomorrow I go to Apple Store genius bar to get the iphone 4 replaced (phoned ahead to make sure they have plenty of replacements). Of note, the second iphone4 (ordered same time, arrived same day) has been 100% fine this whole time without a single problem.

My phone was working as advertised up to recently. I had a problem with the screen going blank when the phone was clearly out in the open and the speaker phone button off. However, when I removed the leather case that I had recently purchased, the problem went away. I placed the case back on and the problem returned. I think that somehow this new leather case casted a shadow or affected the proximity sensor in some way. I am glad to say that I am not having any more troubles with the screen blanking inappropriately. However, I am not saying that there is not a problem with the sensor, just that I have found work-around for the time being.

I've tried both restoring from backup AND restoring to factory settings and nothing worked. The iphone 4 still goes into a coma if I leave it idle for about 15 mins and the only way to wake it up is to hold 'lock' and 'home' buttons for 10 seconds, release, and press again for 10 seconds. Hopefully Apple will exchange it when i visit them soon..
