iPhone 4 periodically won't wake up

Since I activated my new phone last night, it will periodically not wake up from being locked. When I try to wake the phone up from sleep mode, I hit the home button/lock button and nothing happens. Only a hard reset seems to fix the issue, and only temporarily; it happens again 30 minutes to an hour later.

I synced the new phone from my 3G backup. I'm thinking a full restore may help -- any other ideas?

yes any wierd software issues are from backups.

Remember backups contain system settings

Try restoring as NEW and resync apps / music / contacts back on iphone

when goin frrom software versions its better to sync than restore from backup.

I'm experiencing the same iPhone 4 "coma" - this seems to be somewhat wide spread based on the number of posts I've seen. It's happened to my handheld 4 or 5 times since this morning. I'm going to try the fresh restoration approach since I migrated from a 3G and some legacy junk may be hosing up the 4. It would be nice to see an acknowledgment from Apple on this problem along with a remediation plan.

I kind of had this problem this morning. I picked up my reserved phone at 7am. It activated and seemed to be working fine. I went out for breakfast and was playing with the phone while waiting for my food..still seemed to be working fine. I set the phone aside while I ate. When I picked it up and tried to turn it on...I got nothing. I tried the sleep/wake button, I tried the home button..I even attempted a hard reset..and still nothing. Thinking maybe the battery had some how died, I took the phone out to my car and plugged in the charger. Still nothing. My phone was dead. I went right back to Apple (lucky I was only a mile from the mall) and they couldn't get the phone to wake up or start back up either. They eventually swapped it out and gave me a brand new phone.

So far so good with phone #2.

I've had this problem several times today with my iPhone 4.
Hard reset always wakes it up.

When it's in a coma, i tried calling my iPhone 4 to see if AT&T thinks it's still on the network. I get 4 rings and then voicemail as if I just didn't pick up the call - but nothing on the iPhone 4 (no rings, nothing on the screen - comatose).

When I was out and about today, it don't have the problem. When I came home again, the problem recurred. I suspect it may have something to do with being on connected to my home WiFi network (no WiFi when I was out and about).

Tried turning off WiFi on iPhone 4 when I was at home - no problem after several hours. Now I've turned WiFi back on to see if it goes comatose again.

I'm having a similar problem, my phone seems to shut off about every 5 minutes. At first I sync'd my apps but now its setup with nothing at all being sync'd. In watching this happen, im noticing that i'm getting something very similar to a kernel panic on a mac, where you see the dreaded gray curtain go down the screen then you get the error, except here, my screen goes black when the gray curtain goes down.. This is horrible as this new phone is absolutely gorgeous =(

Just wanted to update with a little more info - My phone's issue seems to be a lighter sleep than the comas - I thought I was able to wake it after repeated attempts, but more careful testing reveals that it will always wake, albeit, sometimes after a 15 or 20 second delay. Will try turning off WiFi / a system restore and see if it helps.
