Random dead iPhone 4 issues

Three times now my iPhone 4 has simply gone dead. Black Screen, unresponsive, hard resets do not work. Eventually it comes back from the dead but only after multiple attempts to reset. I did a recovery once. Has anyone else had this issue?

Two incidents here. It seems to happen to me if the phone is in a place with no 3G or wifi signal. After a few hours it is dead and only after several attepts will the hard reset work. Battery was almost completely full and no apps were running that I know of. Apple care only suggested restore. Done a bit earlier. No reoccurrence yet.
Hoping for a firmware update?

Since my iPhone 4 arrived on 6/23, it has frozen in sleep mode every night at around the same time: right around midnight. It required a hard reset to wake it up each time, and each time, the iPhone was not plugged in. Last night was the first time I had it connected to the computer at that time, and lo and behold it was fine when I woke up this morning. I would need to reproduce this a few times to feel more confident about declaring that this is related, but thought I'd let y'all know anyway.

I had the same problem yesterday,my iphone went dead for about 4 hrs. took it to the apple store and the guy runned thru a diagnosed tool and he found no issues ,but he mention that it could be one of the applications that i have thats it is causing my phone to crash cause some of thoses applications are outdated and not compatible with the IOS4 yet

While I'm waiting to get my iPhone 4 replaced for this issue, I did some experiments and figured out what is causing this.

Root cause: Auto-lock and power save

I disabled auto-lock and set it to Never. Had to remove all my mail accounts because iOS4 forces auto-locking with email accounts.

Now the phone would not dim and go into lock mode. Had it running for at least 30 minutes without the black screen of death.

I manually triggered the lock and voila, after 5 minutes, iPhone is dead.

This seems to be a hardware issue because iOS4 comes out with auto-lock on by default and some iPhone users are not having this issue.

Time to hammer down the so called Apple Geniuses.

I originally thought this had to do with the phone going into a hibernation mode when left unplugged and off for a while... but i disproved this the other night cause it locked up after being off for a couple minutes and jsut did it again 15 minutes ago. Hard reset multiple times brings it back though. I now have a feeling it is related to the WiFi hardware. Cause i have yet to have it happen wit hthe WiFi off. Plus it's known that the WiFi is not "top notch" by any means... I am hoping that they fix this and quit making excuses such as "out of date apps"...

Same issue here. 1-3x per day, the phone goes dead. Doing a hard reset (hold home and lock buttons together for 15 seconds) twice usually starts it back up. I called Apple support. They suggested I try restoring to previous backup, and if that didn't work, to create a new admin user on my Windows computer, sign in as that user, restore the phone to factory settings, then log out and log back in as myself and restore to the backup. I did all that this morning and the phone went dead again after half an hour. I then did my double hard reset to boot it back up, and now it's dead again. I'm headed to the Apple store to see if they'll replace it. I'll post the results...

They replaced it. He said it was probably a hardware issue, and he had seen the same issue earlier today too. He and his both have iPhone 4's and haven't had any problems, so it's not an issue with all of them.
I'm not mad at Apple. If anything, I'm more loyal now. Hardware bugs are going to happen even with high quality standards. It's the company's response that makes the difference.

Had my first "shut-off-for-no-reason" yesterday. I noticed a text message coming in right before it died. I had to hold the power button and home button for like 2 minutes before I got the Apple logo. I was really worried that it had died for good since it doesn't usually take that long to restart this phone but that Apple logo sure looks pretty after looking at a blank, dark screen. Haven't seen this problem in that last 24 hours . I'm hoping this is a software issue and not a hardware issue cause I really like my phone and I've got it all set up with my apps.

Happened to me again on Monday. This is only the second time. First time was the day I got it. Tried everything to get it to come back. The first time this happened, I plugged it into the Mac and after about 20 minutes it came back to life. This time, I left it plugged in for over an hour and still nothing.

Went over to the Apple store and the concierge plugged it in, then held the power button and home button, and after about 5 seconds, it came back to life.

If my locks up again, I will try that, but as in baseball, "3 strikes and you're out". Next time I'll go to Apple to get a replacement.

To add to this and confirm this is a hardware issue in my case at least, the random shutoff happened about 10 times under a few hours. Apple suggested a restore, so I tried that several times with different computers, cables, itunes versions, etc. I ended up with a screen stuck on multicolored vertical stripes after all restores ended abruptly with error 9. I'm going in for a replacement, this one is only a week old.
