Random dead iPhone 4 issues

Three times now my iPhone 4 has simply gone dead. Black Screen, unresponsive, hard resets do not work. Eventually it comes back from the dead but only after multiple attempts to reset. I did a recovery once. Has anyone else had this issue?

I just got back form the Apple Store and explained this story and got it replaced. Before that, tried to restore via iTunes and iTunes on another account…no luck!

Try another method. Plug it in (mains or computer), then hold both sleep/wake and home button together for an extended period of time, this may work.

Best of luck in getting it back on!

Same thing here. The restore was bombing out with unknown error 1600. I took it back to the apple store, where they replicated the same behavior. They gave me a new phone and I am back up and running now. FYI- the store had 12 of each model of iphone4 as "replacement parts"- no fancy packaging, just the phone itself. Turns out I had the honor of being the first person with a dead phone in Chicago. I bypassed the line and explained to the associate at the front door the issue I was having, and she got me right into the store and lined up with a tech to help me.

Go Apple- hardware failures happen, good service takes effort.

Well finally the thing responded to a hard reset, and it's back up now. It apparently ran out of battery last night, which is disturbing because it had > 50% power before I went to sleep. I normally charge it overnight but I left it on the nightstand and it was dead by morning. My 3GS never did that. Hope this is minor because I really love this device.

Yep, same problem here (i've actually just posted my own thread, didn't see this one, apologies!). I find its ok if you're using something on it, or like someone else suggested, have an app running, but if left alone it just goes dead. The quickest way to get it back on is to try the hard reset, if it doesnt work first time, try again, and it should come back on the second time. only a temporary fix until something permanent comes along or you can yours replaced.

I noticed mine just randomly freezing on a black screen, until i do a hard reset, it comes back up each time. It's happened 4 times today in 2 hours. I turned off the auto lock, and i have not had the issue since. I have been manually locking it for an hour now and no black screen lock ups yet.

Also:
My battery remaining was just under 50%. What was you all's battery life remaining when this happened?

Could the iPhone4 be entering a sleep mode when not attached to the charger to save on battery life and is getting stuck? hmmm, I have had the same problem twice since the 24th... Freaked out the first time but hard reset worked both times. Hope there is a fix soon. Gonna head to the store today and speak with them. GL all

My iphone4 is dead as well. Nothing I try revives it. It is fully charged to 100%. Took it off charger and when I checked it 30 minutes later it was dead and will not come back to life. If I plug it into the computer or charger it will show the Apple logo and then go black. It continues this cycle over and over but never comes back on. My iphone 4 also suffers from the reception antenna problem that most iphone4 users seem to have. I am bringing it back to the store and if they can not fix it, they can keep it. I am not replacing this with another until I see that I can get a phone that does not have that issue.

Buy a case for it. That will fix the reception problem. It's happening because you are touching two of the anteneas at once. Having a case will eliminate this posibility. So far my phone has locked up twice. Both times i was able to revive it after numerous tries to hard reset. Both times it happened it had been sitting for a long time WITHOUT it connected to the charger. Power save gone wrong maybe????

Also, when I plugged it into my PC and tried to sync, it could not recognize it. Then it said it was in restore mode and that i needed to run a restore. When i did this, it would halt with a 1600 error. That's when i almost gave up but then tried the hard reset a few times... and it worked.

When i went to the apple store today, they told me they were unaware of the problem. I doubt this but the said to make an appointment and they'll take a look... maybe this week.

I hope the hard reset is a fix for everyone else. Might be nice to see if leaving others off the charger over night will cause this.
