iPhone 4 and UConnect

Has anyone tried to get their iPhone 4 to pair with a UConnect hands-free system? I've tried to pair the phone but it won't pair. Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Hi,

My vehicle came with a ipod/iphone univeral connector that connects in the forward compartment, located in front of gear shift lever. It does not recognize my iphone 4s when connected. There is an update to the radio that should take care of this problem, hopefully. It also will not recognize iphone if I connect through usb port.

The 730N RER no bluetooth streaming but the 730N RHR will stream music via bluetooth. I will confirm when I have radio sw update installed. I currently connect for music via iphone audio output to radio input.

I think I answered my original post, can you hook your ipod/iphone up to a RER radio that has UConnect and navigation and use the stock connection that is in the glovebox or central console. The answer is, with the original setup: NO.

I took my radio out the other day and had a look at the back. There are about seven connections on the back. One for standard AM/FM radio antenna, one for Satellite radio antenna and one for navigation antenna. Then there are three more. I don't have a complete handle on what all three are for. I think the white one you see in the picture is for the video input from a reverse backup camera and the rear VES, the grey one on the left is for the speakers but the really interesting one is the centre grey one. That is for either the UConnect or the iPod connection, but can't be for both...

In the original setup.

In the photo you will also see another small grey plug that fits into that centre spot. That goes to the iPod connection in the glovebox or front console. they both wont fit into the same socket at the same time. I really don't know enough about the connections to tell anyone how to mate the two plugs together.

But there is good news. You don't have to spend $350 to $400 on a Chr550 Lockpick device. Although that would be cool to have a rear video entertainment system with separate monitor outputs for two monitors, a backup camera, right and left turn cameras, a front camera and a baby monitor. To say nothing about unlocking the iPod interface, Satellite TV and every other goody you can download.

You can go to your Chrysler dealer and ask them for a wiring harness with part number 82211853. This is an easily connected wiring harness that will unlock the iPod capability of your RER radio.

To do a really basic install you will need a pry tool to remove the radio bezel. A simple small slotted screwdriver will do it. Then you need a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the radio in. Pull out the radio, remove the two grey plugs. Now plug the two grey plugs from the new harness into the back of the radio. You will find two matching grey connectors on the harness. Plug in the two grey plugs you removed from the radio into them. You cannot possibly mix them up. Now feed the iPod end of the cable to wherever you want it to go: glove box, centre console, etc. You can finish it up by drilling a hole into the plastic of the glovebox or console to allow the cable to come through. There is a grommet included to make a professional look to it.

Reinstall the radio and the bezel.

Next time you power up your radio, push the mode button and you will see CD, AUX, HDD, VES, TV (if you have them) and IPOD.

Woo Hoo. Problem solved. My only situation is I already have that iPod connection in my glovebox I want to use and I don't know if I can mate the two up together so I only have one iPod connection. I will let you know when I get mine and get it installed. I should have it tomorrow.

I almost forgot. I found out that Volkswagen uses the same radios in their vehicles, and this fix will solve the same problem they have.

If you are plugging your iPhone into the USB port on the front of the radio, it will not recognise the music. The music must be in mpeg format. ITunes music is in AAC format. You can find software to convert the music from one format to another online. The problem is most iTunes music is DRM protected, so it won't work. But, you can now upgrade all your iTunes to 256kB and remove the DRM protection. You should have received a message from Apple about that. I did. It cost me about $50 to do it. Convert the music files, then put all the music on a memory stick. Now that USB port will recognise your music and download it to the hard drive in your radio (if your radio has one), or play it directly from the memory stick.

There may be an iPod/iPhone interface cable available to allow you to charge your device and play music directly through your radio on the MODE setting. Ask your dealer for details. It's an easy install. It took me about 15 minutes. See my post above. A cheaper solution is to use the accessory port on the front of your radio (if you have one) and connect your iPhone headphone jack using a cable available at any electronics store.

All I did was take my Chrysler back to the dealer and he went through the setup just the same as I did but for some reason my iphone paired with Uconnect fine when he did it. I can even use the Uconnect AUX function and my iphone will play streaming audio (Pandora) or music files through the car's speakers. Maybe he had a higher "girlie" voice that my car liked better. Who knows but even after a couple of days my phone is still paired. Go figure.

I have a problem when I tell Uconnect in my 2012 Jeep to Call "Name" it says Line 1 or Line 2. I don't know why there are duplicates but it is like I have two address books. When I looked in my phone it looked like I was syncing with my computer and icloud. I turned of my computer but now I cleared the contacts in the car and re-synced and it is still asking me. Any ideas?

This can be performed at the dealership. Takes about 20 - 30 minutes. The update will fix the "Error Occurred" message when reading and it will also fix the BTSA choppy sound, this is noticed when the phone is streaming audio and then you press the home button and the screen lights up so you can see the "now playing" etc screen.

If you perfer to do the update yourself, it can also be found in the link below. Here are the instructions for the update:

Download the file to a thumb drive that has been formatted to FAT 32. Turn the radio on and place the thumb drive in the USB connector in the glovebox or center console. Press and release the Uconnect phone button, say "set up, sooftware update". Uconnect will respond with SW update started. You will hear beeps for about 15 minutes, please listen to them just in case there is an error message. When the update is complete, the radio display screen will now go back to the radio. Now plug in an iPod or iPhone. Does it Read correctly and start play?

Hope this helps out.

NOTE: This update is for 2011 Chrysler vehicles that have the Mitsubishi radios (RES< REQ< RHB< or RBZ only)
