Signal issues? You're holding the phone wrong.

In case the Apple support forums are your first stop on your search for why your signal is dropping when you hold your phone, Steve Jobs and Apple consider it a "non issue" and to "avoid holding in that way".

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

I'll tell you what... everyone should talk to someone else's land line from their iPhone 4 before the fix. Hold the antenna, watch the signal drop... you will start to hear audio cut outs and eventually the call will disconnect. This happens pretty much every time you can get the bar down to 1 (for me anyway).

Remember your results! If the "fix" comes in and it IS a cosmetic only one, regardless of the bars you should be able to still drop a call by covering the antenna. I hope this doesnt happen, of course, but it's the only way of knowing if these dropped calls were the antenna problems all along.

We are NOT holding the phone wrong! It is the most common and easiest way to naturally hold the phone. I held the other i phone the same way and never had this issue. Please stop telling people that they are wrong holding the phone the old way. I t tried to hold the phone the UNNATURAL new way and dropped it right away, almost causing damage to the inside of the phone.

Apple put out a letter. They said that this is an error in the formula to display the signal strength bars.
If you loose a call it is most likely because you are in a low signal strength area.

If this is the case how come my house that I work out of 40 hours a week has always had full strength for my work cell and has always had full strength on prior iPhones?

In addition when I run speed tests "holding it right" and wrong I see drastic differences in upload and download?

The software fix is a few weeks out it says.

Let me make a prediction... This response will NOT go over well.

So its AT&T's fault, I see! Brilliant, Apple! Hey guess what... thse dropped calls (that I can FORCE to drop every time with death grip) never happened with any other iPhone in this very same house. The rest of my family has AT&T, but dont have iPhones and they NEVER have this issue--regardless of how they hold their phone.

This is it, Apple got themselves on top and now they are ACTING the part! Dedicated customer for almost 20 years now, and although Ill still be using their products, I will not see them in the same light as I did before. Apple has always done right by its customers in all of my experience with them, but Im afraid they have gotten to big for their britches now. I didnt expect them to fix the hardware problem, as it would only be done with a recall--which was never going to happen. I did expect for them to at least *own up* and maybe offer some kind of workaround like free bumpers to alleviate the pain a bit.

In all honesty, my loyalty has gone.

What's so ridiculous is that even if the bars were made to appear to fuller--if Im in a bad coverage area and I really should be getting 2 bars instead of the 5 I do now--holding the phone wrong will STILL make me drop a call!

Do they not see this is going to still bite them in the butt?? THis changes NOTHING.

Unfortunately the issue also causes me to drop calls...I can replicate the issue everytime I am in an area with slightly less than perfect signal.I will post a video later comparing the 3GS and 4 making a conference call to the same person and showing that the 3gs maintains the call while the 4 loses it. Here is my current video showing the same problem that many others have posted.
