Iphone 4 keeps freezing up

This could be the New IOS4 but I have had several instances where someone was trying to call me and it would not let me answer the call. Screens keep freezing on me and the synchronization of when it turns off the screen is all messed up.

Anyone else having this issue?

Dell Studio, Windows 7

I had the same problem and I discovered what it was. I was using my old 3GS skin cover, and it was covering the proximity sensor ... so I removed it, and it worked fine. If you have something like that covering the front face near the sensor, that's likely the issue. I guess I'll need to get a cover made for the 4. Good luck!

Restart

Apple foresaw the potential for freeze frustration and built a remedy right into the software. According to the support section of Apple's website, users can force their frozen phones to restart by holding down the home button (the circular button on the front of the iPhone) and the Sleep/Wake button (the rectangular, silver button on top of the iPhone) simultaneously for at least 10 seconds. Continue to hold these buttons until the Apple logo appears.Restarting is also a good solution for other problems, such as an unusually high number of dropped calls or an app that's not running properly. Just as full-sized computers sometimes need rebooting to fix minor glitches, so do iPhones.

This worked!!!!

Hi Everyone!

Ok...so a few days ago my 64G IPhone 4s froze. My sister(also has Iphone)showed me how the reset it, by holding down the square and power buttons. Although this did unfreeze it, I still had problems where it would stall, always search for a network(even when I knew I was near a WiFi), prevent me from sending and receiving txt messages and phone calls. I went to the ATT store and they replaced the sim card. Said that if the problem continues, go to the apple store and get it replaced. Well, the problem continued...So I went online to the apple website and did an instant chat with "Lynn" and she said that it sounded like a problem with the software. So she told me to do a backup with ITunes. I did this but the problem still continued...So I got this idea, if its a problem with the software, Why don't I just reinstall it?

So what I did was do the back up in both ITunes and ICloud(Make sure I don't loose any of my stuff), then restored to the factory settings(all of this while still connected to the ITunes), then restored all my apps and information. Yes, it took at least, 5-6 hours to perform everything(never did a backup before, and it was 64G), But once I was done.....TA DAAAAA!!!!!

EVERYTHING NOW WORKS PERFECTLY!!!! Just like when I first got it, fast, I can make calls, I can send txts!! EVERYTHING!!

I hope this helps you resolve your problem! So far, I am going on day 2 and so far so good!! 🙂😁😍

My phone freezes everytime I arrive at work and every time I arrive home. I have concluded its freezing after attempting to switch towers, therefore there is a problem with the phone's signal reception. I am sure this could be easily fixed by apple with ajustments in programing and a new OS. So I am hoping they do actually read these threads. My symptoms are that after I have arrived either home or at work, my screen either remains black when waking it up, freezes in the middle of me doing anything on the phone (doesn't matter what), or sometimes I can tell its rebooted itself if I don't use my phone right when I get home or to work because my homescreen's last position is changed. I went to the apple store and they don't do any trouble shooting, they just gave me a new phone but this new one does exactly the same thing. A tip that has helped me cope is when it freezes, if you want to speed up the reboot process just hold the home butting and the power button down together until the apple appears. I have the Iphone 4g 16GB, interstingly my boyfriend has the 32GB and his has never frozen and we live and work in the same areas so his phone is somehow able to handle switching towers. Maybe its got more memory to handle it...

I was having the same issue with my iPhone 4 and my 3GS. My iPhone 4 was freezing randomly, would eventually reboot itself and work fine for a few days. I did a factory restore, and an iTunes restore, neither of these helped solve the problem. On Saturday 2/25, it froze while I was using the camera, shut itself off and would not come back on at all. I tried everything from iTunes restore (which would not even recognize the phone was there) to hard restore (lock and home button while power was plugged in) NOTHING. I took it back to Apple, and they could not get a response either, luckily it was still under warranty and they replace my phone with a new one. Guess what, it's Monday and this one is doing the same thing.

Hoping that Apple finds a solution to this, kind of ridiculous that you pay $600+ for a phone that has this type of issue. I was considering getting the 4s or waiting for the 5, but with the problems I am having with my current iPhone, I may just go Droid!

Hi There,

I have had a similar issue with my Iphone 4 32gb. it has frozen from me just trying to open my phone with the slider through to just being in the home screen. I didn't know how to do a hard reset so left my phone to run out of battery life and after it reset it was fine again.... Then it happened the next day. My phone has never frozen up on me up until I have updated it to the new IOS4.

I too want to add to this. I'm having the same freezing issue when using the slider. I'm also getting the low storage warning, however, I am no where close to having enough data on my phone to use up all of my storage. I have never had this issue before updating to os5. I have the 3G iPhone 4 for Verizon. The freezing is increasing in frequency.

I hope Apple recognizes this issue and gives us an answer!

iOS7 normally works fine on iPhone 4.

If someone's been inside, ask them to check it's back together properly.

After a firmware update or battery change, it's sometimes necessary to do a factory/hard reset, as described here. This is normally a permanent solution.

If you still have the problem, phone Apple Support, who will advise on iPhone 4. In the UK, that's 0800 107 6285 08:00-19:45 (7 days).

If that doesn't work, locate your nearest Apple store, drive there with a petrol can, and set fire to your phone. At least you'll feel better, even if you do leave in handcuffs.

Piling on here in hopes Apple recognizes the problem and fixes it. Zoom off; proximity sensor not blocked, phone reset, phone restored, push off, fetch off, all email accounts set to manual, iTunes re-installed... etc., etc. Same problem as described by others-- unable to answer call, screen frozen, can't even turn off because of frozen screen. Eventually it resets, works OK for a time, then for no apparent reason, it freezes again.
