This is definitely not fixed with iOS 4.1. I cannot make a phone call with the actual handset, I'm forced to use a hands-fre option or the landline. Not what I payed for, and not what I got from my 3G.

    This needs to be addressed.

I will echo the sentiments of all the other folks here. For whatever reason, I'm having a lot more problems lately. This past weekend, it has happened during every phone call. Not sure what's changed, but it didn't use to be this bad! It is definitely embarrassing when the person on the other end asks me what kind of phone I'm using...if this wasn't an issue with the 3G, then apple better fix it.

Same problem here, received my iphone 4 yesterday and none of the calls was without problems- it's sort of embarrassing using a smartphone that you cannot use as a phone. It's a really nice product with a lot of improvements to my 3G I had before, but I need to use it as phone. Please improve the software.

4.1 didn't fix it for me. This is very likely a defective hardware design problem, and I'm giving up on the 4G for now.

I see this problem is on going, More sensitive to touch, creates accidental button pressing =) Maybe an easy fix is available.
What if during the in call screen all the buttons, to access addresses and end call and mute call, were slide bars, this way u would have to focus on it to make the phone perform these actions.
The Key unlock bar was created so u wouldn't accidentally unlock your phone while it is in your pocket. I think this would solve the problems ppl are faceing =)
Im interested to hear what ppl think about this Idea and what idea's others have

I believe I might have come up with a solution. I too am having the problems with the IPhone 4 by hitting the mute or add call button with my cheek while on a phone conversation. I was messing around with the phone conversation when I hit the home screen then hit the sleep/wake button and my phone had locked up the phone call without dropping the call. I have only tried this once so I hope this is not a one time deal and I hope it works out for many of you because I have been frustrated with this issue as well.

The problem continues. I have been told by the local supplier that it is very common and due to the inability of the 3GS to handle the OS 4 software. There seems to be no way to revert to previous versions of the OS. I virtually always use the phone in hands free or speaker mode. It's very frustrating and have basically come to detest the iPhone.

    Dear Apple:
Funny, this is your "forum," the people that support you. Where is your support? (Do you even read these? What IS the purpose of your support? To politician-excuse yourself from major design flaws?)

Honestly, how difficult an operation is it to release an update for your customers; a solution to two absolutely ridiculous oversights: 1) The ability to customize your text message sounds (absurd) and 2) being able to talk on the phone without your face hanging up or Facetiming some random contact your cheek decided to pick (obnoxious)??? It's bad enough we have to hold the phone in the Steve Jobs-logical way if we want reception, but it's like an acrobatic act to simply converse with your loved ones. (is this a toy or a tool?)

There is absolutely no excuse for your lack of response to these issues. It's been six (count them), 6 months since the release of this product. How much time/money are we talking here? Really? Nothing? Cat got your tongue or are you just too busy counting your revenue and gauging whether your customer is ever right.

Do you take bribes? How much will it cost me/us? I'll buy Jobs a pair of pants and a collared shirt for you to make this right. Or another black turtleneck and Wrangler jeans or whatever. Come on, answer us, fix the problem. Please!

You can use an earpiece, bluetooth, or headphones with the mic so your face is not near the phone at all.
you can also lock you phone during the call so you do not accidentally hit buttons.

I never had this issue with my 3G.

I've exchanged the iPhone4 twice now due to this issue, of course upgraded to the latest iPhone OS --> bug still persists.

    This bug is SOOOOO frustrating.

    Apple please fix this bug!!!!

Same problem as a lot of people : proximity sensors does not realize that I'm talking on the phone and the mute button gets activated.

My wife is so used to it that she now reminds me : "I can't hear you, did you hit the mute button again?"... it beats the frustrating "Hello? HELLO?! hello?" I get from other people, who start to think that it's their own reception have problems whereas I'm on mute...

By the way, we each have an iPhone 4 and she also frequently has the problem.

For my wife it's her personal phone.

for me it's my work phone, and we may need to switch.

Please at least acknowledge the problem and release a timeline for a fix.

Same problem here.. I can reproduce it real easily.. Dial a #, hit CALL then his the Speakerphone before the call actually starts ringing. Now place your hand over the right side of the phone speaker (top-right) of the phone. Turn the speakerphone off and viola, the screen wont go to sleep.

There has to be other ways, or maybe my hands are just big and blocking the proximity sensor while I'm going from phone to speakerphone then back.

I've been getting what seems like the same problem since updating to iOS4, in the middle of a call the connection is broken and when I look at the screen it's blank with the apple symbol in the centre of the screen. Pressing any buttons does nothing then after a couple of minutes the phone comes back to life as if nothing has happened, I don't even have to unlock the sim!!
Anyone else having this happen and is there a solution?

Same problem here always hitting mute or speaker with my ear. If they would just relocate those buttons to the bottom of the screen my problem would be fixed
