My iphone 4G works perfectly!

I just wanted to offset some of the complaints on this board so people who are nervous about the phone will know it is a good buy. I haven't had any issues at all with my phone. No yellow screen, no reduced reception (i am using the black bumper) and no problems with the camera shutter or email operations. All my functions work perfectly, speakerphone is loud, headphones are clear, and the battery life is great. I guess my question would be am I the only person who has never had any problems with an iphone? Because this forum makes it seem like they are guaranteed to have issues when they usually dont. Just sayin...

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4G

There is no design flaw, it's just that the anntenna is exposed now and thus making it more prone to failure. Try it with any phone if you hold it in such way that it covers the way it picks up reception it will lose signal.

I am nearly 100% sure that they will keep the design, maybe just relocate the black line to the top of the phone or something, but if they do that..then someone will figure out a way to cry about that and demand a fix..oh and free stuff as well.

Get over it, no one is making you keep the dang thing, either return it for some of your money back or keep the phone and be happy you got an amazing piece of hardware at your finger tips.

Apple does not owe the public an apology, they didn't point any weapons at anyone's head demanding that they purchase the iPhone, you stood in line for hours(which is stupid by the way) to purchase something you wanted just that bad. So be happy with what you got, don't death grip the phone.

That last bit was for people that actually stood in line that long.

+"We have iPhones that cannot be held..."+

Get a grip, Dan (no pun intended). Every one of these phones - even the ones with this particular issue - +can indeed+ be held. They just cannot be palmed (death-gripped, whathaveyou) left-handed in the manner to which you've become accustomed without apparent loss of signal.

Perhaps a little perspective is in order. When this whole issue gets boiled down to gravy, it amounts to a particular spot on the external metal band which, when touched, has an apparent affect on reception. In and of itself, this should come as little surprise to people. It is a radio antennae, after all. Did you imagine that there should be no place upon its surface that, when touched, would affect something?

The problem happens to be its physical location on the device. Left-handed users who, in the course of normal usage, tend to palm their phones, will inevitably touch this area and consequently see their bars go away. But this need not necessarily be a phone-killer which renders the device a paperweight. The obvious (and most immediate) work-around is to simply modify your grip such that the troublesome bezel is not in contact with your skin. It's not nearly as difficult or dramatic a feat as some people are making out. In fact, it's how I personally grip the phone anyway.

Apple is apparently aware of this issue. A fix is in the works. What do you want? I would agree with you wholeheartedly that the company (and SJ in particular) should get out in front of the story and perform a little hand-holding. And I do find the fact that they seem reticent to do so rather appalling. But, alas, there it is.

Incidentally, my iPhone4, when palmed left-handed, sometimes loses bars as described by many here.

I still think it's a wonderful device and have no regrets with my purchase.

Hey 250jay. Find a clue, dude. This is happening for THOUSANDS. People don't want to return it. They want a phone that doesn't become a brick when held in human hands.

Makes a lovely paperweight-- and works well as a phone-- until you pick it up. Again, catch a clue. 🙂

I know there are thousands, doesn't mean it's a design flaw...it means that people have emotional issues that need correction when it comes to electronic devices. I don't know how everyone holds their phones, but when I hold my phone..i don't hold it in such way that would cover up the lines on the iPhone4.

So does this mean that THOUSANDS hold the phone up to their faces with the fattiest part of their hand ON the BOTTOM LEFT portion of the phone? Left handed I am, and I have used my friends iPhone4 like I normally use my 3GS and you know what..no problems.

Simple problem, DON'T DEATH GRIP THE PHONE. I really hope apple just tells everyone to shove it on this one because everyone is crying about it like they deserve something..you choose how you spend your money...it's your fault if you make an investment you aren't happy with..thank god for return policies.

falcon -

I think you and some others are generalizing the issue. Here's what it REALLY boils down to is this:

1 - All phones lose signal to a degree when handled. This is a common thing and people who are complaining about losing a bar or two but aren't getting disconnected or losing call quality should just keep enjoying their phones... that's how they work.

2 - In certain areas, the loss is so great, the call disconnects.
3 - NOT all phones actually cease to transmit data when touched in a particular place

I hold my phone in my left hand when browsing the web...using my right to type/point. This basically makes the phone not work in many places.

"Stop holding your fingers over the antenna"????? Are you kidding?? Are we supposed to hold the phone by pinching the front and rear? The antenna surrounds the perimeter of the phone! I am holding this phone the same way I've held ever single cellphone. Additionally, many people have reported that bumpers merely delay the onset of the signal drop, not eliminate it!

Jun 26, 2010 8:15 PM in response to Dan Slocum

No problem here man... So my question to those of you who are having the problem. If it's something Apple physically has to do and u had to return your phones, how would you feel about that? If it's something that can be fixed by a bumper and Apple gave them fir free, would that be ok? If Apple stuck with their guns and said hold it different or return it and get your money back, would that be ok? Everyone wants a fix, wants to sue, call news networks, YouTube, Facebook.... How about send your phone back or exchange it to see if that works, if it doesn't don't buy this phone, because I garuntee Apple will not recall this phone, I'm thinking u so cAlled thousands got a bad batch or maybe u have sweaty hands or your hand has static interference... Agh how about .. take the phone back say **** Apple and use another service... Can anyone give me pointers on shooting video or taking pictures in the dark using MY 4? This is a tech discussion thread remember not a Apple bashing YouTube, facebook, myspace emotional "I want to be famous forum. State your problem move on or offer suggestions to those who need help or simply just shut the **** up!

Davis Boy, Calm WAY down. There is much constructive information being exchanged here.

Thousands of people have iPhones that don't work when they are picked up.

That's a problem. What is the fix? It is NOT bumpers. That's not working for all. Maybe it's an exchange with a phone that works.

I trust Apple will make the right decision on this. There's too much to lose when network newscasters are literally laughing at your product on national TV.

Jun 26, 2010 8:44 PM in response to Dan Slocum

Ok I can calm down no problem, I will calm down when everyone else calms down... Look exchange the phone hoping that fixes the problem and if it doesn't get your money back. The world won't end and Apple will still push the phone, honestly we all need to calm way down. I hate whinners with a passion, exchange the phone and be done. When the 3Gs came out it froze up all the time, what did I do? I took the phone back and exchanged it. Phone worked fine... Look my rants are to those talking about class action suits and Spple bashing. A true Apple or iPhone fan would conduct grown men and women business by exchanging the phone and not getting off by this thread because they are bored...Who cares what news stations think and youtubers think, just exchange the phone or get your money back. Is that so hard to do?

My iphone 4G works perfectly!
