iPhone 4 HD video recordings play upside when imported to my computer

When I import my hd video recordings to my computer, they play upside down.

Granted, the link above gave a couple solutions, which are to play the movies in quicktime and itunes, but I love using VLC. It even does this when using Windows Media Player. Also it was suggested to email the video to yourself, but that compresses the video, causing the quality to go down.

On top of all this, it even shows up upside down when I open it with Pinnacle to edit it. Sure, there's a video effect to rotate it, but once again, Pinnacle will compress the video when exported.

Is this being looked into? And is there a solution that doesn't require compressing it with a codec or playing it in quicktime/itunes? Like I said, I love using VLC.

As mentioned by someone else before:

Windows Media Player doesn't seem to honor the EXIF orientation flag in the video file that indication the orientation of the video.

And Microsoft doesn't want to change it, because they've always done it that way. If they changed it, people who have found a way to work with this would then have all THEIR video's upside down.

Seems to me like the solution is simple... Apple is creating a device that doesn't work the way the user expects. They should re-orient the camera sensor to be rightside up when the volume buttons are up the way the user expects the camera to work. Then they can continue to use EXIF data for photographers, and the photos will look correct for the masses.

That just means that the people who strongly believe that the volume buttons should be on the bottom will complain that things are upside down. The real solution, is for video players to correclty read the EXIF information. This was not a problem pre-iphone because all cameras had a clear correct orientation, but with camera phones, there is no clear correct way to hold it.

You can download a free app for windows that will both convert it to almost any other video format and rotate the video by 90 or 180 or 270 degrees. The name of the app is Format Factory. Just do a google search for it. After you have installed it, select the file(s) you wish to convert and the format wmv, mov, mpg, etc. Then select the "Output Setting" button, scroll down and expand the "Advanced" option. Select "Rotate Right" for 90 degrees and "Rotate Left" for 270 degrees. To change the rotation 180 degrees you must select both the "X Mirror" and the "Y Mirror" options. Click OK and then start converting/rotating your video. You can also do a rotation without converting the format if you wish, just select the same format to convert to as the original video.

It may be funny, but you're right it is a legitimate issue. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded the software to 7.0. I will try it again using landscape. I think my internal gyroscope is also not working right. Sometimes it doesn't correct when I turn the phone from portrait to landscape when doing other things, like reading my email, etc.

That may be a hardware problem. Try taking a few photo's whilst rotating the phone. If your photos turn out in with the wrong orientation, then your gyroscope indeed isn't working right.

I had the same issue. A small defect, but very annoying, also when reading stuff, because the screen isn't always orientated right.

I received a new iPhone from Apple after sending it to them.
