Netflix won't go into full screen mode in Firefox.

So I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but anyways. I just used migration assistant to transfer everything from my old 13" macbook 2008 to my new MBP 15" 2010. So after solving one problem with silverlight that wouldn't even let me stream movies from netflix because I was getting the error N8156-6013, I've now run into another problem 😟. One I start streaming a movie on my laptop within firefox and want to go full screen I can't. The video will either stop for a second and continue on normally, or the browser window will go completely black (although the sound is still working.) One remedy I have found is turning the automatic graphics switching off; However it's strange since it works in safari just fine and I don't have a problem watching other things in full screen. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is definitely an issue with the graphics switching that the new i-series MBPs have. I'm not sure if it's still a continued problem with the 2011 models, but my 2010 i7 does this exact same thing with FF. It happened in FF3 and now in FF4 as well.

I'm running gfxCardStatus and I can get Netflix to not play full screen if the Intel graphics chip is being used and I try to full screen a Netflix movie. It flickers white and then goes back to normal size, and sometimes the browser just goes black. The interesting thing here is, you can see the gfxCardStatus icon go from "i" to "d" and back to "i" when the screen flickers and the movie returns to normal size (or goes black). So it's like FF is TRYING to switch to the NVIDIA chip, but it can't make it happen.

To test this further I used gfxCardStatus to force the NVIDIA chip to be used. FF will full screen a Netflix movie just fine. If I force the Intel chip to be used, it'll work as well. I've tried disabling hardware acceleration in FF (you can do that in FF4 now), but to my understanding and through some Googling, FF will still try to switch when you get to a website that it thinks needs it. I think the setting just prevents FF from starting up with the discrete chip.

All-in-all sounds like a software issue between FF and OS X. I'm guessing Apple implemented their graphics switching in a "weird" way, and FF developers haven't locked it down yet. I would stick to Chrome to watch Netflix full screen, but it causes my fans to go nuts and my laptop to heat up really bad. So I just lock in my graphics card to one or the other, and full screen it in FF.

I'm now having the exact same problem -- with Safari -- after the latest Safari update. Can't get Netflix to go to full screen; after a couple of tries, the screen goes blank but the audio continues. I updated Silverlight yesterday and that solved the problem. Today, however, the problem is back. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you!

Safari 5.1 here with the same exact problem on my MBP. Netflix plays fine till I select the "Full Screen" mode then it never goes full screen but blinks real quick, screen goes black and audio plays on normally. I used Netflix yesterday with no issues at all but I did do a Safafri and a Silverlight update. I suspect it is one of these updates that is causing the bug.

I did find a work around that does allow you to stream in full screen. What you do is go into your Applications folder and launch Silverlight. Leave it open in the background and now you will be able to view your movie in Full Screen. If you close Silverlight then your back to the original problem. Obviously a programming bug, and hopefully a quick and fast fix for this since it used to work noramlly before.

Graphics card issue. I had the same problem. After fooling around, uninstalling/reinstalling MS Silverlight and trying other workarounds, I found one that "worked" for now, at least...

Open your System Preferences and go into Energy Saver.

Uncheck/disable Automatic Graphics Switching at the top of the preference pane.

This should force your computer to use the fastest/best GPU that your computer has (there are 2).

Hope this helps!

This is a good work around for the problem, but I am afraid it is just that a work around since this increases battery consumption and you need to go backinto preferences to set it back the way it was so that it works normally again when you are done with NetFlix. I emailed Silverlight and they said they are aware of this but it is an issue with NetFlix.

I just discovered the turning off the "automatic graphics switching" today because I am having the same problem with all three browsers (Safari, Firefox, and Chrome) and the full screen Netflix issue. Thankfully I found this discussion thread as it was starting to really annoy me. LOL

I see you upgraded to Lion. Do you have a MacBook Pro? I haven't heard good things about the upgrade to Lion.. slower, programs not functioning, etc. You getting any of those issues?
