iPhone 4 displays incorrect time

It's 15:13:29 on the official US time site but my iPhone says it is 15:22. How can this be fixed? I've taken a screen shot and can email to you or post it on another forum that will make fun of Apple for getting something so simple all wrong.

Hi, I haven't been out of the country (UK)... my PC date and time is correct for UK time, yet my phone is some eight hours ahead... this has happened all of a sudden tonight. My friend is on the same carrier and is not having any problems... Obviously we can just turn off the 'auto' option, but then what is the point in having something that you can't use? 😟

After coming back from an extended stay in Melbourne, the time on my iPhone was still stuck in that timezone despite being 'set automatically'. After some poking around, I discovered the problem buried in Settings > General > Restrictions > Location > System Services.

I discovered (and suddenly remembered) that I had turned off 'Setting Time Zone' a long time ago. It seems that with this setting off, setting date and time to update automatically in 'Date & Time' does nothing.

I turned it on and the little purple location arrow appeared in the top bar. After a minute or two, voila! Time switched to the correct time.

But for some reason, the arrow does not disappear and implies that the iPhone is continuously checking its location (which was why I had turned it off in the first place, i.e. to save my battery life). So after the timezone was correctly fixed, I went back in and turned if off. And so we're back where we started , in a way.

I simply turned off setting date and time automatically.

Yes! Thank you Jadesimian - that solved the problem for me.

I have never changed those settings myself so it seems that timezone setting must be off by default. I had to first of all enable Restrictions as they were all disabled. Then when I checked the individual setting for each one I found most of them were on ... except, you guessed it, Setting Time Zone. I have never changed this but I think this was the first time I had travelled with my iPhone 4S so perhaps there was a change made to everyone's phones by Apple, recently (when iOS5 was introduced?). There were reports from some cutomers that their new iPhones had a noticably poor battery life. Maybe with one of their updates Apple decided to switch off some things like time-zone setting based on location to preserve battery life (since that little purple arrow, when present on the screen, indicates that GPS is being used and is using up battery power all the time). For most people this wouldn't be a problem as crossing timezones isn't a regular activity. Perhaps Apple thought, on balance, people would rather have longer lasting batteries than automatic time-zone changing?

I still don't understand why my phone moved timezones on the outward journey without any fuss, but then got stuck and wouldn't move back on the return leg. I guess we may never know the answer to that one.

Anyway, it seems that this little switch, buried away under 5 or 6 levels fromm the home screen, plays a major roile in the time shown on your phone. I would never have found it. Thanks for looking and for taking the time to share your discovery. As Manyfrommorpington said, above, you can get around the problem but what is the point of having an 'auto' option if you can't use it. At last a proper solution.

Just to recap, in case anyone else is struggling (sand doesn't want to read all of my ramblings above), here's a summary:

PROBLEM:

iPhone may automatically adjust timezone when travelling but may not adjust back to 'home' timezone on return.

E.g. Flying from London to New York, clock on iPhone adjusts automatically(from GMT to EST), but on return, clock remains on EST, permanantly displaying time 5 hours behind local time in London.

AFFECTING:

iPhone 4S running iOS5

SOLUTION:

General > Restrictions > (May have to Enable then provide a passcode) > Location > (ensure Allow Changes is checked/ticked) > System Services > Setting Time Zone = ON

Then remember to set

General > Date & Time > Set Automatically = ON

None of these "fixes" has worked for me, I'm in UK, havent been abroad for a while, using iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01, woke up this morning and my time is twenty minutes late, I've tried all resets, all restriction things above, nothing works, it insists on being twenty minutes out. Tried syncing with PC, no joy, PC time is correct.

Very Annoying!!!

Edit: Only thing which does work is manually setting the time, but this is a workaround not a fix

Setting manually is just annoying. My wifes phone was the reason I joined this discussion and as of yet none of the fixes worked. My own phone ran into this bug for the first time in over a year. For my phone, I had it set manually, reset network under settings and it seems to have worked for my phone. Now I am hoping the same steps will fix my wifes. Will keep you posted. By the way when my phone started hitting this bug it looked like it was working but late in the night / early morning went to the wrong time zone. This is not only inconvienent but could cause some serious issues. Why isn't Apple doing anything? It's clearly a bug that should be addressed.

I also have discovered the same problem. When set to automatic the time is 16 minutes behind. I have tried re-syncing my phone with no luck. Also checked time settings on macbook which are correct. Have also reset network settings still with no luck.

It's very annoying as going have to result in setting time manually, which is a pain.

Has anyone else got any resolutions?

Don't see why apple provide services that are not reliable 😟

I had the same issue and none of the responses seemed to work but I'm happy to say I found the fix for 2 of my iphone 4's.

Set the time manually if not already correct. Reset the network settings. Then go back into the settings and re-enable set time automatically.

I was beyond frustrated but that was the fix for 2 of my phones. Your mileage my vary.

🙂

I found one solution, at least in my case. My iPhone4 was regularly setting itself back by 2 hours. I tried changing all the settings on the iPhone, to no avail. Finally, I realized it was resetting only when I synced it with my Mac.

I had nothing set to "automatic" on either my MacBook or my iPhone, and the MacBook's clock was set correctly, so I couldn't see why the iPhone kept changing its time.

Then I realized that my MacBook's time-zone (in System Preferences/Date&Time/Timezone) was set to Namibia, which is 2 hours ahead of GMT (I'm in the UK), even though the actual time was correctly set.

So here's what I think was happening. I plug my iPhone into the MacBook. The iPhone says to the MacBook "What time do you have?" and the MacBook says "10am" (which is the correct time here in the UK). The iPhone then says to the MacBook "Where are you?", and the MacBook says "I'm in Namibia". The iPhone then says "Aha! I'm in the UK; so if you're in Namibia and it's 10am, then it must be 8am in the UK!", and the iPhone resets its clock to 8am.

So, I solved the problem simply by setting my MacBook's timezone to GMT (as it should have been). This is irritating, because if the "automatic" settings are all turned off, I don't see why the iPhone should consult the MacBook before setting its clock. But at least the problem is solved.

Cheers,

Paul
