Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

AppleCare + (which is $99) not only extends the warranty to 2 years total and gives 2 years of free phone service, also provides for 2 replacements for accidental damage. And with each replacement you still have a warranty.

It is $299 to do an out-of-warranty replacement. So you have $99+$49 for the warrant coverage and replacement, for a total of $148 versus $299 for an out-of-replacement service, which is $151 more. How is this a con?

Just got my phone fixed today by the Apple Store in Sacramento. The back was completely shattered and it was $29 to replace the back of my iPhone 4. The front also has a small crack, that's not all that noticeable. I asked if they could fix the front and they said the only option with that is to replace the whole phone for $149. I also asked if they just sell the part so I could fix it myself, but the girl in the store said that they don't sell that part. I didn't have Applecare or a warranty. It only took her about 5 minutes, which for $29 is a lot better than all the Internet options and the hassle of fixing it. They also replace it with the real back, not some fake plastic crap. If your back is broken, I would definitely take it down to Apple. Kudos to Apple Customer Service for today, very respectable.

Totally agreed.

BTW maybe apple is nice to individuals… they like.

I broke my 4s yesterday and hoped they will like me and give me a discount on repairing the screen.

$200 is ridiculous. Its the same concept as marketing different sizes of storage making huge profits.

Anyways I rather throw it away than paying that price.

This is my second iphone and I own several other apple products.

I believe I deserved a freebie or a discount on this but didn't get it.

Now I got hurt next time I will think twice putting my cash on apple.

Of course I do not believe I am entitled to free repair but $200.... NO WAY

.

$200 is ridiculous? No, not taking care of a $650+ piece of electronics and then whining because it will cost you less than a third of its actual retail value to replace is ridiculous.

You didn't deserve squat. If you totaled your car, would you expect the manufacturer to replace it? No. Not even if it was your 5th car from that manufacturer. Or your 10th. That's what insurance is for.

You were offered a discount. A new one is $650.

Try breaking a droid and see what they offer you.

Hey brainwashed genius - It's a $15 repair for Apple, so let's not compare it to a totalled car OK.

And yes, if I broke the headlight on my car, and the manufacturer wanted 1/3 of it's price to repair it, when they could repair it for a few bucks, I'd be ****** about that too. That's what Apple is doing. Now go kiss that picture of Jobs goodnight and say your prayers (to him, of course).

They don't "repair" it for front screen damage from a drop. They replace the entire iPhone with a service unit (make sure you have it backed up) as other damage to the logic board may have occurred. Do you really think the service unit, and the overhead to make the transfer, is $15? And when you get your replacement it is covered by the remainder of your iPhone warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer.

You can get it repaired at 3rd party repair places for less, depending on the damage around $95 to $135 (you will get charged a minimum of one-hours shop repair time, probably around $70 to $90) plus the cost of the parts. When you are done there is no warranty on it.

Yes, they replace your phone for $200 with a previously broken phone. Then they fix your phone for $15, and sell for $200 to the next person. Or, if you were "smart" enough to buy their $50 warranty, they'll sell you the phone for $50, which means you're only out $100 for their $15 repair.

I know Apple is paying you $12 an hour to work there in your spare time, so you fee a duty to get on this board and defend them. But yes, their cost of repair is about $15. My ten year old cousin can do this repair but Apple holds you hostage to their $200 replacement by voiding the warranty. When monkeys in mall kiosks will do the repair for $100 and obviously make a profit at it, when Apple makes the part, and when you can buy the part on Amazon for a pittance, what do you really think it costs Apple?

In this case, the cost to them was a life long customer.

Now, it's almost noon, so some of you need to face Cupertino and meditate.

You may or may not get a refurbished unit, depends on the availability. There is no way they repair a returned iPhone for $15. I'm assuming (or hoping) you don't run your own business or you are an accountant.

Apple pays me nothing, I don't work for them and never have. Apple refurbishes iPhones in the US at US labor rates. For a smashed front screen you would have to replace the glass, digitizer and screen. That alone would be more than $15. The entire labor costs (not just salary but retirement, health insurance, vacation, etc. plus overhead would be more than $15.

But since you have your 10 year old cousin available why don't you buy the parts and have him do it.

So long, I doubt anybody will miss you. And I was in the Grand Jury room listening to testimony, couldn't bow to Cupertino or meditate. Sorry to disappoint you.

Jun 27, 2012 12:20 PM in response to DBridgman

When you go the low road and start name-calling you have broken the Terms of Use you agreed to.

That is where NEW iPhones are assembled. They don't send them back to China to refurbish them.

I volunteered for the Grand Jury, which is different than jury duty. But I've never tried to get out of jury duty either as I consider this one of the responsibilities of living in our country, civic duty and all that. You apparently don't care to participate.

I have had an iPhone 3GS for almost 3 years now and I have dropped it dozens of times on many types of floor from at least 5 feet at virtually every angle, squashed it, wacked it, sat on it, and virtually every kind of abuse you can think of, and I have never had a problem... I only recently slapped on a thin hardshell case from incipio, just in case I ever needed it, and it doesn't even protect the front, only protects from scratches on the back... I carry my phone everywhere loose in my pocket. Needless to say, I am very happy with my iPhone. I have never had such a durable phone. I used to carry around old-school cell phones and they usually only lasted a year or less before breaking... flipphones or not it doesn't matter.

I also know other people who feel the same way about the durability of the iPhone 4 and 4S, as I have three other family members with them.

I think that no matter what phone it is, it can break in the right circumstances. There must be a perfect angle that my iPhone hasn't been dropped at yet that could break it. If there was really a quality flaw in iPhones, I think we would have many thousands of people trying to post here.

As for warranty, I always just threw away my old phones, without bothering with a warranty... but it is nice to know that there is at least an iPhone warranty if something goes wrong not related to my negligence. I have more than got my money out of this phone, and will probably upgrade to the next iPhone that comes out.

It doesnt take a Apple Genius to come to the conclusion

that the iPhone 4s glass has major flaws. I hear time

and again that the iPhone 3G and 3Gs has way better

glass then the 4s has. It looks like Apple cut corners

to maximize profits on the customers expense. Apple

could have easily used Corning Gorila glass instead

and there wouldn't be any problems like this.
