Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Since I see that some major damage control takes placehere, I will put my last word .

My first iphone was the first that came to the market. The original, whatever model that will be.

I still have it in functioning state. That phone dropped on al kind of surfaces unprotected, many many times.

Its aluminum case is full of dents the screen has only few scratches.

Now my new 4S just droped from my jacket's pocket that was left on a chair. That was barely 2 feet high.

It hit the spot where case meets glass. As soon I heard the sound I knew it broke.

Bottom line is, yes the 4S glass is not what the original used to be.

Yes if you drop it from 1-2 feet it could shatter and yes you will visit the store and you will pay 1/3 of the overall value.

Now as customers we are and we like nice toys some of us are not idiots.

I just got off the phone with some guy at the Apple store in Raleigh named Tom who told me that it was in fact IMPOSSIBLE to replace the broken glass on an Iphone and that all Iphones with broken screens were THROWN AWAY never to be used again. Therefore, he was doing me a FAVOR to replace it for $200. You have seriously got to be kidding me. I guess the dude at the mall kiosk replacing screens all day has magic powers.

If you are on this forum because you have a broken screen and have not been satisfied with the service provided to you, make sure you fill out the e-mail surveys sent to you. It affects the store's customer service metrics with Apple, bonuses, etc. Take the time to send a message that you won't put up with it.

Despite what he said, phones brought in with a broken screen are sent in and (if possible) refurbished. Often there is also damage to the logic board that later becomes evident so if you go to the kiosk ask them to replace that while it is open otherwise you face another labor charge when you have to come back for that repair.

It is not economically viable for Apple to repair front screens. They replace the entire phone and the service replacement either has the unexpired warranty period of the original iPhone or 90 days, whichever is longer. You have no warranty after dealing with the guy at the kiosk.

He was obviously lying through his teeth and almost stuttering when he said it. After using the phone with a broken screen for a few weeks, it's fairly obvious there is no damage to the logic board. And, given the minimal impact that caused the breakage, I am quite certain it was just the poor quality glass that was damaged.

And, I don't really need a warranty now, because that won't get me anything but another Apple product for another $200. And I'm done with Apple and their Chinese sweatshop assembly by twelve year olds after seeing how much they really don't care about their customers.

I wish Apple would replace my phone. I'm a paramedic in New York. I went on a bad ambulance call and had to intubate a patient. While doing so my phone fell out of my shirt pocket and landed on the front screen. I attempted to explain this to apple and they told me to pay 200 dollars. Way to take care of your emergency services personnel...
