Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Had my iPhone 4 for about 15 months. Last night I was in my basement watching TV with my iPhone sitting on the computer desk next to me. I accidently hit the desk with my elbow and this stupid baseball clock (a real baseball with a little clock sitting in it) fell off its stand, rolled off the shelf it was on, and landed on my iPhone; completely shattering the front screen! I have babied this phone so much since the day I bought it. As soon as I purchased it I put a screen protector on it than put the phone in an Otterbox Defender case. Once a month I replace the screen protector with a new one, I clean my iPhone once a month with one of those cleaning cloths you get with a pair of glasses, and I don't let anyone touch my iPhone besides me.

I am devastated by this. No piece of electronics I have ever owned has broken, because of how well I take care of my devices (previous phones, laptops, video game systems, TVs, etc.). I always handle them with the utmost care and delicacy. ****, in the 11 years I have owned a cell phone I have never EVER dropped one.

I made an appointment with the local Apple Store's Genius Bar for Friday at 2:30pm (with my work schedule that is the earliest day & time I can go). I honestly do not care if I have to shell out $200 for a replacement (even though the phone only cost me $150 from Verizon when my New Every Two was up), I just want my phone replaced/repaired! I am in no way an Apple sheep, the 1st generation iPod Video and this iPhone are the only Apple products I own, and honestly I am not a fan of MACs. I just look at it like this, to purchase a new iPhone would cost $650, if Apple is willing to give me a refurb'd iPhone for $200, than I'm a happy camper. I mean look at it like this, they could always just say "Oh well, ***** to be you".

I'm actually praying they will give me a replacement phone for $200. With the kind of luck I have that would be a best case scenario. I swear, if I didn't have bad luck I would have no luck at all.

No, Baseball defintely hasn't been good to me. Not to mention the baseball team I coach lost in the championship game due to a walk off double (even though we were up 4 runs going into the bottom of the last inning) last month.

Anyway thanks for the reply, it has eased my mind a bit. I just did a backup of my phone in preparation of Friday since this is the only free time I will have until then. One question I have is if they replace it and I hook up the replaced iPhone to my iTunes, will it sync my contacts as well as purchased apps, music, ringtones etc.? Or will the contacts have to be manually added in by me? Also, how do you change the phones over in iTunes? Is it as simple as changing the SN# in Preferences or something? And I am assuming activating the phone will be like how I did my original iPhone, through iTunes as well?

You need to have your contacts in some type of app on your computer. Everything else should be backed up. When you bring the new one home you will connect it to your computer and Restore it from your backup (DO NOT set it up as a new iPhone.)

P.S. Condolences on the championship game.

Thanks for all the help guys.

To close out the story I ended up going to the Apple Store today instead of Friday. I had to go to New York for a service call forwork this morning and when we have to travel like that (from Philly) they don't expect us back in the office so I figured I would just show up at the Apple Store when I was finished and see if they could fit me in. So I got to the Apple Store about 3:30pm and went back to the Genius Bar area and said to the person who was checking people in that I currently have an appointment for Friday but was there anway I could be seen today. She said she had an opening at 5:20pm so I put my name in for it than walked around the Mall that the store is in (King of Prussia Mall) to kill the roughly 2 hours I had to wait. I went back to the (extremely crowded) Apple Store about 5 minutes before the appointment time and checked in. The rep said I was next so the next available "Genius" would see me. After waiting for 5 more minutes a young girl came over and introduced herself. I told her what happened to my phone and that I know it's out of warranty but I read about the Out Of Warranty Replacement and I was fine with paying for a replacement. She took my phone and gave it a once over and said okay, she would be right back.

She came back with a replacement phone and she went through all the setup and whatnot, then we activated my phone (I have Verizon so we had to call *228), and once it was active she even transferred my Contacts for me. All-in-all the whole process took about 20 minutes.

I was extremely satisfied with the service and walked out of the store on Cloud 9. The service I received was amazing, and not only me but from what I saw everyone was getting exceptional service. So after I paid the bill (149 + tax) and everything was finished I went to an Invisible Shield Kiosk that sits right outside of the Apple Store and purchased a front & back HD Shield and they installed it for me. Currently I just restored the phone from the backup I made last night and it is currently syncing everything.

To close out a long & boring story, I must say that I was thrilled with the service, promptness, and experience I just had. Like I said in a previous post, the fact that I had to buy the replacement didn't bother me one bit, all I wanted to do was get my problem resolved and Apple did it without any speed bumps and with exceptional customer service.

Sorry for the rant, I'm done.

If you are having a hard time fixing your iphone 4 and you want to get it done for free I'll do it. I bought the kit awhile back cause I knew at some point I'd drop my phone, all my friends have Iphones so they just come to me, just make sure you buy the parts and send it to me. I usually only fix at&t Iphones but lately I've been getting verizon and sprint phones as well. When you email me, just give me a brief summary of what happened and if there is anything else wrong with the phone, I don't normally fix internal problems, but I will if you let me know in advancUser uploaded fileed.
