Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

deggie,

I believe what CHuckle317 was saying is that if you have a cracked screen, the warranty is void for any other problems that may pop up with the iPhone--even if the phones have minor cracks which have nothing to do with a legitimate problem with the phone. Ive heard of plenty of people who took their iPhones in for something like a faulty Home Button and then were denied their warranty because of a minor, unrelated crack in the screen which happened months before the hardware failure.

To be fair though, I personally have had very good luck with a similar example and was offered a refurbished iPad, despite a minor crack. It call comes down to the particular Genius and store itself, in my experience. Apple has always done right by me for 20 years and that's why I continue to buy their products.

For those who are willing to be brave.....(I grew a pair just for this one)..... you don't have to pay $100-$200 to fix your screen. I pulled the trigger on a kit and I fixed it myself. My phone is new as good as NEW! I may charge all my friends what apple does to start fixing their spider webbed phones!!!

(*Note: I went with the more expensive of the 2 main options b/c the reviews for the cheaper one said the tools were not quality and were a pain to use. I had no issues with this one.)

For some of us who accidentally dropped our phone and it shattered (in my case, I had the Apple bumper on it when I dropped it), Apple has replaced the phone for free. I do not know how long they will continue with this policy.

No, no they don't. The bumper wasn't designed to stop damage from occuring, it was created to help with reception problems, and any case you put on your device will not guarantee it from being damaged or automatically insure it, it will only reduce the possibility of damage occuring. Ultimately it comes down to the ancient Chinese proverb "You break it, you buy it," or " you break it, you pay for it."

The biggest problem most people have is that Apple decided to use cheaper glass for there iPhone 4s and its not as durable as it could have been. If they just used corning gorilla glass this discussion about breaking your iphone from just dropping it wouldn't even exist. When you pay $800 for a phone you expect the very best quality and durability, especially when it comes to the glass. If you ask any Mac genius about what glass is being used in the 4s they will say its there own glass or whatever, but not gorilla glass. But why? Some of Apples competitors are using Gorilla Glass and those phones are just about unbreakable. There is no way you can break Gorilla glass just from dropping your phone from 5 feet.

I love my iPhone 4s but Apple could have gone that extra mile and used Gorilla Glass and these complaints would have been almost non existent. From a company like Apple you expect the very best and when you find out that Apple competitors phones are more durable because of higher quality parts you can't help but wonder why?

Well, I broke the glass on my iPhone 4s once within the first week of owning it. I dropped it from only about 5 feet and the glass on the front shattered, so when I took it in for a replacement I was told by the Apple genius "We use our own glass and not Gorilla Glass" and thats where I got my information from. I was lucky enough to get my phone replaced for free so I am not complaining, but I may have been told the wrong information about what glass they use in there 4s? You would think If Apple uses Gorilla Glass they would use this as a selling point to sell more phones?

APPLE DOES NOT USE GORILLA GLASS IN ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS!!!!

The only smartphones using Corning Gorilla Glasss are the phones listed below. Anyone can verify themselves by going to the Corning Glass Company website and they provide a list of products that are using this special, most durable amazing glass. I guess Apple is too cheap or stuck up to use the strongest glass made by an American owned business. They would rather give the Chinese the money then create more jobs here in America by using better quality glass thats made here in the States.

Wriggle if you will.

Refer to the full list of companies using Gorilla glass here: http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/full-products-list

Note that 33 companies use it, but only 16 companies are allowed to be listed. Not too firm a foundation for your comments such as "I guess Apple is too cheap or stuck up to use the strongest glass made by an American owned business. They would rather give the Chinese the money then create more jobs here in America by using better quality glass thats made here in the States."

I have seen plenty of demonstrations for gorilla glass on youtube and to me it seems after watching plenty of these

demonstration videos that Apple is most likely using a different glass. I wish I were wrong but I can't find any evidence

anywhere that proves that Apple is using anything other then their own glass. I don't know why Apple would want to

keep this a secret and tell there customers they don't use it, but anything is possible I guess?

The Gorilla Glass used in smartphones was developed in conjunction with Apple for use in the first iPhone. Originally the iPhone was going to be plastic but Jobs decided glass would be better. They were going to look at China but a board member of Corning Glass suggested that Jobs speak with Wendell Weeks, Corning Glass CEO. Weeks told Jobs that Corning had developed a strong glass in the 60's they called "gorilla glass" but they never found a market for it. They produced the glass needed for the release of the first iPhone in 6 months (at the Corning Harrisburg, Kentucky plant). The CEO of corning has only one framed memento on display in his office, a note from Mr. Jobs sent on the day the iPhone came out saying, "We couldn't have done it without you."

From "Steve Jobs" but Walter Isaacson, pages 471 - 472.

In Tim Cooks testimony before a Senate committee this week he made the statement that all glass for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPads is made in Kentucky.

You are obviously not very familiar with Apple.
