Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

UPDATE just to comfort some of you..

Dropped mine out of my shirt pocket while bending over at the mailbox to pick-up some mail I'd dropped.. Screen shattered in a big way.
Took it to the Apple store SLC, UT (genius bar appointment) and they replaced it without question. Becoming more of an Apple fan slowly but surely. I'd like to attribute it to my wit and charm but I'm not gonna put my eggs in THAT basket.

IF YOU GO TO THE APPLE STORE WITH A SORROWFUL / THANKFUL ATTITUDE, THEY'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU -- PROVEN STORY.

Seriously? You can manage to sign into these forums, but you can't do a simple search?

I also went in with the same exact problem and everything. They said it would cost $150 to replace. Did you by any change have Apple care or insurence on your phone?

I had a co worker tell me she did the same thing as you and she was also able to get a new replacement phone free of charge without apple care or insurence. Do you think they are ripping me off or something like that?

It really frustrated me

Tonight I dropped my iphone about a foot and the screen completely smashed. I went to apple devastated that this happened and was told that they could replace the screen for $150 but that the phone appeared to be a bit bent from the fall so the screen replacement may not work and then i'd have to pay $260 for a phone replacement- even worse. I mentioned how I saw so many people on apple forums got theirs replaced for free as a one time courtesy and they said it was my fault and they werent liable. I left my phone to be fixed knowing I'd have to pay the $150. Well, I came home and I called apple and asked to speak to a supervisor and when I explained my situation and told them all the apple products I own and how it seemed like they picked who got it free vs who had to pay..the guy told me itd be no problem and he would give me a courtesy repair as well. He did say they don't just give out the courtesy repairs usually and you do have to call so make sure you take the extra time and call. I had already authorized the repair with the cost to me and they still discounted it to be free. Good luck!!

Shattered my 6 month old iPhone 4s screen with about a 2 foot drop on my hardwood floor. Just came back from the Genius Bar with no free replacement, despite seeming pitiful and nice. I was told clearly that the warranty did not cover accidental damage. The only option I was offered was a $199 replacement phone. Given the going rate for repairing the screen doesn't seem to be that much lower I went with this option begrudgingly. Feel ripped off:(

I should have! I went to Genius bar hoping for the free one time swap out. I tried the cute and desperate act. Nada. I even mentioned I switched from a Samsung. Nada. I have heard such great things about Apple customer service, but in this case they were bascially the same service I would have gotten at any cell phone store. Next time I will try calling customer care.
