Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Hey Folks,
Mainly a reader on here, but thought I would chime in on this hot topic. I have had great success in the past for my old 3G with an internet repair service who offers great repairs on iPhones, iPods etc at exceptionally low prices -> Stores.ebay.com/iRepair-National . Right now their iPhone 4 screen repair service is on sale for $130, $70 less than Apple. Hopefully I won't have any issues with breaking my new iPhone, but if I do and Apple doesn't extend the hand of benevolence I will definitely be hitting them up again

I dropped my iPhone 4 4 days ago from about 2.5 - 3 feet on concrete. It was the first time I dropped it. The phone came down on its edge and cracked the front screen. Needless to say I was bummed. I dropped my 3gs 50+ times and it worked flawlessly. It was so sturdy I didn't use a case.
I made a genius bar appointment after reading these forums. I went in for my appointment today. The specialist examined my phone for damage, asked me what happened, checked for water damage, and said she would be right back.
She appeared 15 minutes later with a new iPhone. She activated it and put my old one in a black plastic shell. After signing a few papers and vowing not to be so clumsy I was off.
I went in expecting to pay 199 for a new screen. I have to say I was very surprised. They were in no way obligated to replace my screen, but did it for free and gained a lifelong customer in the process. So definitely give the apple store a shot before you pursue other options.

Good for you!! Now, go out and buy a really good case for your phone, so maybe next time, if there is a next time, it will be harder to break the screen!

Defective glass? Bought 3weeks ago. Dropped once from 2 ft while sitting at a football game. Shattered!!! Product should be recalled. Apple wants 199 to replace glass that is 20 times stronger and 30 times stiffer, but shatters from being dropped off our lap at 2ft. ? Our ipods have been dropped many times without problem. Obviously didn't do enought product testing. Called and spoke to apple and a fellow named Josh and he said it was all our fault and apple wouldn't stand behind the break, then our call was cut off. He basically said it was bad luck. I wonder why apple charges 199 just to replace the glass. Does it seem reasonable that if the product can break so easily that warnings might be on the package or instructions? In addition is it reasonable for apple to charge an additional 199 for a repair that probably costs them 50 or less? I feel a little taken. I'm hoping more people will complain. It doesn't seem right to be charged for a defective product...

I dropped my iPhone 4 and was totally shocked to see how badly the back had shattered. Again like most others I expected to pick it up and get on with my call! Phoned Apple to see how much it would cost to fix and they said if I sent it back to them it would be £118 and if I took it to the Genius Bar (100 miles away) it would be get fixed there and then for £25. Lucky for me I had a good friend who happened to be going that way that weekend so I got it booked it in and paid the £25. Sorted!

UPDATE just to comfort some of you..

Dropped mine out of my shirt pocket while bending over at the mailbox to pick-up some mail I'd dropped.. Screen shattered in a big way.
Took it to the Apple store SLC, UT (genius bar appointment) and they replaced it without question. Becoming more of an Apple fan slowly but surely. I'd like to attribute it to my wit and charm but I'm not gonna put my eggs in THAT basket.

IF YOU GO TO THE APPLE STORE WITH A SORROWFUL / THANKFUL ATTITUDE, THEY'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU -- PROVEN STORY.

I also had a great experience at the Apple Store today. Dropped my phone last night and shattered the front screen. Made an appointment at the Genius Bar in Pittsburgh, PA and was originally told that it would be $199 but that he would take 20% off that because of the situation. After talking with him throughout the setup of the new phone he handed me a paper to sign and said be careful... The invoice was for $0.00. I was speechless.

A quick description of what happened to me today, in case it's of any help.

This morning my iPhone 4 dropped around three feet and the front glass screen shattered. The cover was on at the time (one of the free Speck black tartan covers) and it cracked on the top left corner where it hit the floor.

I made an appointment for the Apple store at North Point mall and took it in. The Apple Genius took a look at it, entered the serial number into his iPod Touch and said that since the phone is still relatively new (August 2010) and there's no history of device abuse (???) that they can make a one-time exception and replace the phone for free.

So he replaced the phone for free and within ten minutes I was heading home.
