Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Same thing happened to me on Wednesday. I made an appt at the apple store (they told me on the phone it would be $99 to replace not $199) but when I got to the store yesterday they just gave me a whole new phone as a "one time curtosey". Articles say they can replace the glass in the stores but the rep in the store I went to said they can't - either way they replaced the phone and I just bought a better case for it.
So I suggest you try the Apple store first. (just backup everything before you go bc they wipe your old phone clean of all data)
If you go to the guys who advertise on the internet to replace the glass for $50 bucks or do it yourself with the plastic screens, it invalidates your warranty.

I had a similar experience today - I had no idea that I'd be leaving with a new phone without spending a dime.

I believe that the key is being truthful about how you broke your screen. Be sincere and hope for the best.

Now I know why Apple consistently receives high marks for their customer service. Customer service can make the difference between a good product and a truly outstanding product.

I just dropped my iPhone 4 yesterday on some tile at my job and my screen completely shattered! It still works fine but jwas told that the iPhone 4s have a 1 time glass replacement thing for accidents like mine. I already made an appointment for Apple later on this week. I really hope I can get it replaced because I've only had this phone since September. Do y'all think it's worth the wait? Will apple replace my broken phone because this shattered glass is scratching my fingers :/ it's horrible.

So I am yet another careless person in this iWorld. I dropped my iphone4 day before while getting out of my car (all people I have talked about this said that people mostly drop their phones while getting out of their car - so be careful guys!). It took me 10 min to believe that screen of my sparkling 2 month old iphone4 (btw my first iphone) was now a spider web.

I spent my whole day yesterday trying to figure out my options to get it fixed. A bunch of people on this thread earlier mentioned that they went to genius bar and they replaced their phone for free. I was highly skeptical about this but since some local vendors gave me a quote of min $150 to replace the screen, I decided to give genius bar a try.

Made a reservation for last evening, was escorted well. The lady said it's going to cost me $199 to replace screen. Then she said she is going to try and find what they can do for me. To my surprise, she came back with a brand new phone and a statement saying that they are doing it for free as a one time courtesy.

I was a fan of apple already (considering I am iOS developer), but this incidence has made me a hard core fan. I am in Love with Apple.

Hope this help those of you with broken screens!!

I just upgraded from my iPhone 3 to the 4 exactly one month and 14 days now. Unfortunately I dropped the phone and went in hoping to find some luck like some of the other replies. Yet again Apple doesn't help me at all. After waiting for 35 minutes (I had an appointment) I was simply told it would cost $199. Not to brag or be rude, but there are 4 Apple computer in my house and I have been an owner of numerous Apple computers for 9 years. That being said, I might want to stop going to the Apple Store in Costa Mesa (South Coast Plaza). Does anyone know if my warranty would be void if I fixed it myself?

I just shattered my screen yesterday. It was shocking. I ended up getting it replaced for free. New phone arrives Tuesday. This did take some effort on my part. I was passed to two supervisors until I got one to replace it. The closet apple store is in Salt Lake, so going to the store was not an option for me. I ended up at the ATT store where I got the phone. They were helpful in the fact they could verify the damage to the phone. I have a speck case with a screen protector on it. This did not save me! I dropped the iphone 4 from around two feet and it was toast.

I didn't ever think such could happen...I found out just yesterday night that such could happen, and it did. Screen is completely shattered.
I've read about 20 million forums, or articles saying if you replace the screen elsewhere, you void the warranty.
So right now I'm in the situation of going to the nearest Apple store (2 hours away) or holding off for a few weeks without my precious iPhone to have the money to replace the screen, or the phone itself.
Phone works, just screen is all shattered. I almost about cried when this happened.

Why would you make a cell phone with glass? WHY? Yes, it's a sleek design, but people drop their phones everyday. It happens, and there's nothing we can do about it.

So moral of the story, glue your phone to your hand and never let it out of your sight.

I'm hoping that my luck will go far at the Apple store, I've read several of you got it replaced for free. I'm hoping I get a sympathy from them. I've owned 3 apple products, all which have broke on me.

I think I deserve some kindness from Apple.
