Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

My iPhone 4 fell a couple feet yesterday (it had the free thin case from apple) onto tile and landed on the top right corner, cracking the glass in that area. It was still pretty usable, but I took it to the Apple Store in Dadeland (Miami area) around lunchtime to see what they could do for me. They replaced the whole phone for free right on the spot! I was told that this was a one-time courtesy and that next time it would be $199 to replace it again. Now, I will invest in a real case to decrease the chance of this happening again

Another vote for "attitude is everything". Murphy came-a-calling, and I ended up with a shattered screen on my iPhone 4 the day before yesterday. I resigned myself to paying $500 for a new phone; bad day, indeed!

After reviewing this forum and others (DIY scree repairs) my hopes were up slightly that I may have to pay only $199 vice the $499 for a replacement phone.

Walked into the Apple store in University Village north of Seattle, went to the genius bar (no appointment), and waited a few minutes....when it was my turn, I told them what happened, and Chris (genius) stated it was an out of warranty failure- but he'd look and see what he could do. I agreed that the damage was my fault.

Imagine my surprise when he came out with a new phone, and told me they would be taking care of it! No charge at all!

Moral- tell the truth, don't expect anything but professional service, and you too may be pleasantly surprised....

I can promise you that it was against policy that he performed that repair free of charge. Occasionally a customer is gifted a "good-will" action at the Genius Bar, and will get a screen repaired or phone replaced free of charge even outside the scope of the warranty. People should not expect this sort of this - as MANY other users I know have had to pay out of pocket at the Genius Bar for phone repairs.

Good on you for getting a nice favor though. That's great.

I have a appointment this weekend to have them look at my cracked screen repair. I dropped my phone out of my pocket with a apple bumper case on it into pine straw. Picked it up and the lower left corner was cracked. I am sure mine is no where near as bad as what some of you have experienced. I really hope that the next iPhone moves away from the glass screen being raised above the metal band/case. I have owned every iPhone since the beginning, and I have never broken one phone.

I recently dropped my iPhone 4 on ceramic tile when it fell out of my pocket at work. I hadn't noticed that I shattered the screen and ended up getting a tiny glass sliver in my finger. I thought I had gotten it out but there is still a teeny piece still in there that I can feel if I hit it a certain way, so BE CAREFUL! I need to dig it out!

Anyways, I booked an appointment at Apple and they told me "Just today only I will replace this for free, this is not covered under warranty and we will make note that we have given you a free phone, this is a ONE time thing. " They also told me that they do not repair the screens and that next time I will have to buy a brand new phone. I also wanted my sons iPod touch looked at and repaired because the left earphone never works in it, and he told me they do not repair it you have to buy a new one. This was the Apple Store at Yorkdale Mall.

I was definitely relieved I didn't have to put any money out, the phone was 6 mths old.

I have had my iphone 4 for three weeks and love it however yesterday I noticed a small chip on the screen, devastated! Took it to apple store and arranged appointment with genius, he said I have to pay £139 for a cosmetic fault, I have not dropped it! I keep it in a leather case, and have never let it come into contact with anything, I have always taken great care with my mobiles as with this one, I have not damaged it, I have heard that apple gives good CS, I am heartened by those of you have had courtesies extended to them and received replacement phones. I will go back to the apple store and throw myself on their managers mercy.

Thanks ever so much for your advice and support, after reading your comments about the quality of apple customer service I contacted customer support services UK and again explained my problem, Danielle was very helpful and made an appointment with a genius at a local store and said just explain my problem. I attended my appointment and was offered a new replacement under warranty with no charge, excellent customer service I'm a very happy cistomer.

I had my 3G for well over the 2 year contract and I broke my screen for the first time ever without having a case on it. I took it into Apple the next day and told them my story, was just really truthful about everything. I broke my screen, I'm up for the upgrade to get the 4 and just wanted the phone to turn back on and not have the screen fixed as I would be upgrading later that month anyways. The genius took it to the back to see what he could do to at least get it to turn back on. And he came back with a new screen as a one time courtesy waiving the $99 fee for a iPhone 3 screen. I needed to sign that waiver that I was getting it replaced as a one time courtesy. Hopefully if youre being truthful and you get a nice Genius you can be on your merry way!

I somehow broke the rear glass of my iPhone 4. Luckily, this is only a $30 fix, as it is actually removed and replaced, unlike the front screen which cannot be replaced and you're paying $200 for a new phone.

Better yet, Phil, the genius that helped me at the Apple Store, replaced the glass for free. He also replaced a 6th gen shuffle that I dropped yesterday and broke the screen (it hasn't been a good month for me and apple products)...for free too!

Way to go Apple!

Hi all

just want to add, I am from Australia. used my phone ip4 for 6 months now. Dropped off from the bed on floorboard and shattered. rang up apple and said $249 to get a replacement phone. Booked the time at one of the store. I turned up and the saleman said the same thing $249. I agreed , then swapped over. But at the end of the swapped the saleman said, have a good day we won't charge you today and enjoy your new phone. I was thinking what the heck ?... but yeah LOVE apple now. Not sure if it is free because of defect product or what but got it free so Apple rule. And now I have extended further 90 days warranty on top of my 110 days left. So yeah

I still don't know why it is free at the end but all good 🙂.

I shattered the screen on my iPhone 4 as well. I called AT&T and they told me to take it to Apple and they could repair it for $25 to $50. I made an appointment with a Genius. Even though my phone was out of warranty and despite the fact that the damage to the phone was my fault, I received a replaced phone--free of charge. I was told the cost to repair the phone was $199 but I did not pay that. In fact, my appointment was at 10:10 a.m. and I was out of the store at 10:15 a.m. with a new programmed (with the information on my old phone) iPhone 4. Again, I did not pay a dime. It was a pleasant experience.

I've dropped my phone so many times but never on cement, as was the case today. Obviously, my screen shattered. So I found a bunch of sites saying that Apple stores have a 'large suction cup' that will replace the screen in a matter of minutes for $199. I'm not sure if I have insurance since I bought my phone online at midnight the night it was released. I'm assuming that I do since I did on my old plan. Anyways, if I don't have insurance, I'd rather just do this little 'suction cup replacement' thing so I wouldn't have to re-load all of my apps, pictures, music, contacts.. EVERYTHING onto my new phone. Not to mention all of my personalized settings like app placement, app folders, notes, wallpapers, etc. However, my closest Apple store is an hour away. Is there any way that I can send in my phone to Apple and have them do the suction cup thing without actually replacing my phone? Re-uploading everything to my phone would be such a hassle. If not, I can just drive to my closest Apple store and pray that they'll fix it for free like a bunch of you are saying that they did for you.

So glad I found this thread. I ran into a desk corner with my phone in my pocket. Shattered the screen. I was about to buy a replacement screen watching a DIY video, but then stumpled upon this thread. Reading the stories of folk who got their's replaced by Apple regardless of circumstances prompted me to make the 100 mile drive to my nearest Apple store (after making an appointment online) and within 5 minutes, I was out the door with a brand new phone, gratis. The Apple Genius noted that I had 6 days left on my warranty so I really lucked out. (Might be time to buy the expanded coverage!) I also learned that the Apple policy is one courtesy replacement per customer. I asked if that started over with a new phone and he indicated not likely. Although it appeared to me that when he looked at my history, it only showed the history of my iPhone 4. So I wonder if you start over when you upgrade.

In any event, I am once again a happy Apple customer!
