Broken screen repair for IPhone 4?

My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Same here, I literally just got my iphone on monday and one of my students broke it friday. Sooo frusterating! The mom offered to pay for it but I felt terrible asking a woman who doesn't have enough money to own a cell phone to pay for mine. No sympathy from apple whatsoever. They told me it would be $199 for a whole new phone which is bull**** because im having someone fix just the cover for $30 now.

My advice:

1) you might as well try the genius bar, you might get EXTREMELY lucky and get it replaced for free BUT IF THEY TRY TO CHARGE YOU any more then $30

2) look on craigslist or ebay to try to find someone who can fix it for cheaper, I finally found someone who will do it just for the cost of the cover because they gt screwed by apple too

3) DONT get the insurance like I did! Im really regreting that now since they wont fix damage, total BS!!

Did you have an iPhone 4 or 4s? If you had a 4s and you purchased only AppleCare that does not cover damage. If you purchased AppleCare+ with a 4s it is a $49 deductible for accidental damage with 2 incidents covered.

You will no longer get it covered for free. They will offer to sell you AppleCare+ (for a 4s) for $99 and then the $49 for the deductible.

Your $30 new cover will work but permanently kills the warranty. The $199 gets you a replacement phone which continues to be under warranty and the AppleCare can be applied to it.

Same here at the Costa Mesa Apple Store - no fairy tale story of free phone replacement. The funny thing is people here are being quoted different prices than I was. When I called, they told me it would be around $100 to fix it. Then when I went to the genius bar, they told me it would be $149 to replace my iphone 4. Why are people being charged $169 or $199??

I'm just going to try to fix it myself for $30 and if that doesn't work, I'll just use my older iphone til iphone 5 comes out.

No free go for me either. $149.

I was told that the free service was being abused. Not sure how since they log them.

My question is will they EVER do it free now? Mine was out of warranty for less than a month. If I was within the warranty peroid, would they have done it for free?

Also, *** are there still issues with this? Is the 4S more sturdy?

I fixed my phone myself using a part purchased from Amazon.com for around $30. I didn't want to buy a new phone because I planned on getting the iphone 5 whenever that comes out. Fixing the front screen is doable but it requires some study and lots of patience.

Btw, if you just break the back cover, it's much easier to fix and the part is a lot cheaper.

My phone fell down on the floor and the front screen is broken. I called the apple store to inquire about the charges(hoping that they'll do it for free as it's still under warrenty). The guy answered the phone said I'll have to go to the store to get it checked. He also said they might fix it for free or charge a minimal fee. I drove down to the apple store which is an hour drive. I walk up to the genius bar and the guy in the counter starts explaining me that for screen replacement I have to pay 149$. I was obviously mad because if they told me the same thing over the phone I wouldn't go to the store(wasting my 2hr time). I'll look for other options. I asked him why he didn't tell me about the charges in the phone, he says we are not allowed to disclose the charges in the phone. I was so frustrated that these people doesn't respect customer's time. I don't know what wrong in explaining the charges over the phone. Stupid apple customer support.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage. Period.

In the event the damage is extremely minor the might be able to change the screen but they cannot assess the damage without seeing it. Yours obviously had heavy damage hence the offer of an out-of-warranty replacement (they don't fix it, they replace the entire phone with a service unit which will then be warrantied for 90 days or the length of your current warranty, whichever is longer).

They have no way to assess this over the phone. Next time your car breaks down call a repair shop before you take it in and have them give you an estimate over the phone. Or, if you are in a wreck, call the body shop from the scene and ask them how much it will cost to fix it. They love thes calls so they can say "stupid cusomers".

What part of "the screen is broken" is confusing to techs?

If the screen is broken, whether or not it impedes on functionality, it needs to be replaced in order to be NOT broken.

My issue is that the > 3gs iPhones were shipped with an issue such as this. There is NO way this was an unknown issue.

Warranty does not cover accidental damage. Fine. It SHOULD cover (at least once) a manufacture or design defect. Apple has great products but they make some really stupid decisions. Some that either would have had not possitive effect or even a negative one. The hockey puck is the perfect example.

They did say that they used to replace the broken screens for free. They just stopped the free service now, which they told me in the store. My point is they could tell me the same answer over the phone.

In the phone conversation I told them my screen is broken. No matter how bad is breakage it has to be replaced, isn't it? How does a minor/major breakage matters to the service department? They did tell me they'll replace the screen. They didn't tell me they will give me another device( I don't care about it for the matter of fact).

I'm sure you know about word 'ESTIMATE'. When I call the car mechanic he'll ask me what services I want and then he'll give me an estimate. He,me (and you) know that the estimated amount is not going to be the actual charge.

After all my point is they could have told me if it can serviced for free or not over the phone.

Dear friends, my iphone4 screen also got crack while playing with my 10 month old daughter and got shocked as it was approx Rs 33,000/- and the apple customer care centre straight forward told me to purchase a new iphone and screen cannot be replaced, since damage has already occurred. Thus, no warranty. Now a days, I'm using the same iPhone 4 with cracked screen. Few friends, who were earlier impressed with my iPhone 4 and planning to buy iPhone 4s have now dropped their idea to purchase Apple product especially iPhones.
