Hey GoodWorks, GREAT STORY! I was curious as to how long you had your phone, was it more than a year. I have had mine for about 13 months. I have a hairline crack on part of the screen and a scratch on another part. I should at least go to the genius bar and see what they can do for me, especially after hearing your story.
For every Great Story there must be hundreds of Bad Stories or Apple would make a lot less profit replacing shattered Iphones 4 screen's for free! I read loads of Great Stories from America, perhaps not so many from else where! My wife had been using my old Iphone 3GS for a year until it stopped working in August, so she bought a new Iphone 4 last month, only to see it fall from the kitchen table this week and guess what? Yes, the front glass shattered. So on here I read loads of Great Stories of how Apple can replace them for free and chatted to Apple on line, where the lady said “take it to the Genius bar and see what they can do.” I made the 80 mile round trip to Newcastle UK this morning to be told that will be £119 please! Why didn’t the Apple lady just tell me that? Wife said she’s not paying that, said she’ll wait until it stops working or she cuts her finger off. We have learnt one thing when our kids ask to replace their HTC’s for Iphone’s, the answers no, unless we can move to America. Where they appear to have something else we Brit’s can’t have over here, AppleCare+ that covers up to two incidents of accidental damage with a service fee each time of $49 (about £29). So are there any Great Stories outside America or is there any other country that has this type of AppleCare+?
After a 14 hour drive. I stopped at a gas station to step out of my truck. about four feet up my phone fell out of my lap.
I have dropped my phone many times and from higher spots. Once while walking. nothing but a scratch. another time just a tiny ding in the screen.
but the whole back of my phone this time cracked. you could see INSIDE the phone. I pieced back a few pieces of the back so you couldnt see inside. but im out of town and wont be able to take it into the apple store for a food two weeks...
No insurence! Lets see where this goes!
Im so glad im not the only person this happened to!!!!!!! My screen is completly shattered. Here's the story. I was in english class with my brand new iphone 4, I know i wasn't supposed to have it in class but a few days earlier someone had taken my lock off my locker and put it on someone elses. So i wasn't about ready to get it stolen. Since it's really uncomfortable in my pocket i put it in my notebook so no one would see it. The teacher grabbed my notebook, without knowing what was in itheld it up and shook it to show the class an example of my work. the phone fell out (obviously) and the screen as you know shattered!!!!!!!!!!! 😟 as i reached for the phone i was completly shocked i was so sad and mad but do you think he should have to pay for a new one? in my defence he shouldn't have touched my stuff without asking :/
DO NOT BUY AN OTTER BOX DEFENDER 4!! I purchased one of these cases based on the video you can see on their website. Understanding that adds tend to lean towards the hyperbole side, I don't rock climb and so I presumed that the phone would at minimum be protected from a 6ft fall (my height). Well not only is it not protected from a 6ft fall but 2.5ft!! It fell flat on it's face with the cover on and I now have a broken glass on my new Iphone with a newly purchased otterbox case. I just emailed their customer service department to see what type of compensation I might be able to get towards the purchase of a new glass (if any). I guess the best thing to do is just don't drop it..... Maybe the Apple Store near me would be as generous and helpful as the store you went to.
Why should he have to pay for it? Obviously you were using your phone in class. You could of had it in your backpack. And plus he's your teacher he can touch your notebook while you are in his class. Maybe if you paid more attention in class you would know defense is spelled with an "s" and not a "c."
For a phone thats costs $850 "iPhone 4 S" to buy unlocked from Apple you would think it they would have used the best and stongest glass known to man. I never had a cell phone fall from 3 feet before and break anything but maybe just a few scratches but thats it. Now I have to go to the Apple store and beg them to replace or fix it for free. I hope that can understand my point and at least replace once without having to pay the $200?
He (or she) wasn't using the iPhone in his class. She (or he) had it in his or her notebook rather than leave it in an unlocked locker. (I presume in a front pocket of the notebook.) Of course, that's a pretty silly place to have kept it (gee, my pocket is "uncomfortable"), so maybe you are right that he or she was using it surreptiously! The story does sound a bit suspicious. Why would a teacher grab a notebook to show the class an example of someone's work? And, shake it?!! In all the years I was in school that never happened.
But, we should assume innocent until proven guilty. If we are talking about a teacher grabbing a student's notebook and shaking it all around an effort to humiliate a student ("Look, everyone, this dummy's work is atrocious!), that person shouldn't be teaching-- and should be on the hook for part of the repair costs.
Better to have had the iPhone out in the open and confiscated-- or to have turned it into the principal's office for safe-keeping. I think you're stuck. It's clear that there was a rule against having phones in class... and you broke it. The teacher didn't deliberately set out to break the phone; he or she didn't even know it was there.
Time for a lawyer to chime in here who know about contributory negligence.
My phone fell out of my pocket in the dressing room of JC Penney on Friday and since I have insurance on it through my carrier, Verizon, I walked through the mall to their store immediately. They told me that a replacement would cost $180 with my insurance, but to try the apple store first to see what they could do. So I left there and walked across the way to the Apple store and I asked someone if they could help me out with my phone and they told me that I needed an appointment with a technician at the ganius bar. Since they were busy, my appointment was made for the next day, which was Saturday.
When the woman met me for my appointment the next day, she had major attitude and didn't seem as though she wanted to help me at all. She looked at my cracked screen with disgust and ran her finger across it and acted like she had a piece of glass stuck in her finger, which she never found. My screen wasn't that bad I had been using it all day before I had come in and nothing had seemed loose or came off. She told me that Apple only does replacements depending on the circumstances of which the phone broke. She then told me that she would speak to her manager and get back with me. After she had been in the back for 30 seconds she came back and told me that her manager told her that Apple had sent out a notice that morning that said, "As of today, Apple is no longer allowed to do replacements in the store." She gave me a fake sad face, shrugged her shoulders, said sorry, and walked away.
My dad was with me and we both thought that this was odd so he told me to ask someone else. I found someone who was checking a computer and I told him about the experience I just had. I asked him if what she said was true, and since I had come in the previous day to get the problem resolved that the "New Rule" shouldn't apply to me because it wasn't my fault that they were too busy to see me the day before. He said that what the woman had just told me didn't sound as though it had any truth to it and that he would check for me himself. He went in the back and was gone for about 5 minutes. When he came back he told me that what the woman had told me was not only false, but no employee should be telling customers that Apple is no longer replacing phones in the store. He told me that he would be able to replace my phone for me and waive the usual replacement fee because I had been misinformed.
YAY!!!!
i had 3 or so month iphone in pocket sitting on floor and its just slide out and cacked all over on both sides would apple replace for free because its under a year or no?
Unlikely. Apple's warranty does not cover damage caused by neglect.
Well, after making my appointment and explaining exactly how it came to be that my iPhone 4 S glass was shattered, they judt gave me a new phone without any charge! THANK GOD APPLE IS UNDERSTANDING ABOUT CERTAIN SITUATIONS! Thanks Apple!!! 🙂
How long have you had the phone? My ipod touch screen shattered the other day and I've had it for almost for a year. I'm hoping when I go tomorrow that they'll replace it for free. You don't have apple care or anything right? Is your phone at least under warranty? Did you sound sorrowful/thankful when you talked about it to him?
Well, in my case I was fighting off two teenage thugs who thought they could rob me and take my iPhone. I managed to fight them off with just a few scrathes on my face, then they just ran off and my iPhone front screen was shattered. When I explained to Apple they felt horrible about the circumstances and replacced the phone for free. I just bought the phone brand new about a month ago.... Mabey a good sob story might work out for you, however this sis actually what happened in my case.
No luck at the Richmond, BC Apple store. I dropped my iPhone 4, shattering the entire screen. They are replacing the phone for $169, which is a far cry from "free", but I guess it's better than nothing.
