Bluetooth Range is Awful in iPhone 4

When I go to the gym, I used to be able to have good reception (no skips) when I put my iPhone 3GS in my pocket. Now, the phone has to be very close to get any kind of reception. To eliminate the possibility of my headphone (Motorola S305) going bad, I testing both my iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. The range in the iPhone 4 is significantly worse than the iPhone 3GS. I'm assuming this isn't something a software patch can fix yah?

Other OS, Windows 7 RTM (64bit)

My new iPhone 4G drops its bluetooth connection to the Mercedes OEM handsfree system when I place my hand on my lap covering the phone in my pocket (this is a comfortable position for driving and did not realize I did this until I noticed the problem).

I started seeing "reconnecting with iPhone" messages... I wondered why I was dropping the connection - this was happening 4-7 times during a 45 minute commute.

I experimented and found that I could 100% make the connection drop simply by putting my hand on top of the phone inside my pocket (my hand on outside of pants).

This NEVER happened with my 3GS.

I am happy to see I am not alone, although not happy it is occurring.

I have now tried not to put my hand there, but think this is a pretty poor solution.

I did read that some people who had this problem, went to the Apple store and got a replacement that did not do this (my phone arrived on the first day! so it is absolutely first generation)

Any new ideas or feedback from Apple?

thanks

Rich

I just visited the Apple store to exchange my phone... their "official" stance is that there is not a problem with the bluetooth on iPhone 4... however, they gladly switched my phone.

So far on a 35 minute drive it did not drop once... I even tried covering it with my hand, etc.

Real results will be over the next few days, but so far so good on the replacement phone

I just noticed this today after pairing my bluetooth speakers. I used to be able to take the phone anywhere around my 1800sq ft house and have no problems at all. Now I can't go 10 feet without it skipping and eventually disconnecting. I'm sure I'll have the same problem at the gym with my stereo headphones.

Really, you think that the features would improve with each new phone, but what I've come to realize is that you never know what you're going to get in the next iphone version.

I have a new iPhone 4. My old Plantronics 510 wouldn't work with my new iPhone (still works with my 2G of course). It's stupid that the iPhone 4 will pair with 510 and control volume but no audio passes through on phone calls. Dumb.

Anyway, I bought a new Jawbone Extreme. This is the best BT headset I have ever owned hands down. A2DP is flawless, and people can here me even in loud environments. I use it to listen to podcasts and navigational instructions. The range was great. Notice I said was. After a couple of days I started noticing the same problem many here in this topic have had with the iPhone 4. Ridiculously reduced range. As in, the darn connection would drop unless I was literally holding the iPhone in my hand (and not even at arm's length, like no more than one foot from my head). Forget about putting it in any pocket. Even shirt pocket. Case or no case, made no difference. If the iPhone touched my body anywhere, the signal is immediately dropped. Placing phone on table and walking more than 5 feet away, lost signal.

It's obviously a hardware or software flaw in iPhone 4. I'm hoping it's software and they will actually fix it. I have to believe it is software related because when I reset Network Settings, the problem goes away.

THIS WORKED FOR ME AS WELL - thanks steveip4.

Just go Settings > General > Reset (at bottom) > Reset Network Settings.

I have a plantronics headset that had 15m range with my iPhone 3Gs.

I got a new iPhone 4, iOS 4.2, and had the same bluetooth range problems mentioned on this forum, it wouldn't even work in my trouser pocket and I don't wear lead codpieces anymore so I couldn't see why there should be a problem.

After the network reset the range on the iPhone 4 is now 15m. Wahey!

This just goes to show just how important this Apple Discussions are... I was having a heckova time with my Jawbone earpiece shortly after getting my (Verizon) iPhone. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden I couldn't connect without physically going into the phone General settings and reselecting my Jawbone device. Anyway, after reading your post, I tried the Reset Network Settings and it's back to it's old self. That said, I'm wondering for how long, but, for now, I'm a happy (albiet slightly frustrated) camper.

I have an iphone 4 and have not had any success with the quality of the audio with the Icon...I was told that it was the Jawbone itself, so I paired it with my work phone and the ICON was crystal clear. I am disappointed that I purchased the 4 b/c bluetooth is critical to me.

I really hope Apple can address this with an IOS update, but I am loosing hope that this is a flawed design.

i have noticed Bluetooth acting quirky with my ip4. my old 2005 bmw M-3 bluetooth kept locking up the car computer when paired.but i am pretty certain this was the BMW receiver that caused that.BMW wouldn't claim that is was their fault! @!#$. so i fired BMW and went to Toyota got a vehicle without bluetooth installed. when i use fully charged (or not fully charged)bt headset i notice static, cut outs, loss of connection then reconnection multiple times with no rhyme or reason that i could understand. it doesn't happen always, maybe 25% of the time. yes there is a problem with something,,,maybe sunspots or other atmospheric interference with other radio sources if it isn't the hardware devices. **** i don't know the answer for sure, but id need to know. i get tired of making due with wireless technology so i went back to hardwired headset.

This is the best solution if you start to experience bluetooth range issues with your iPhone 4. I'm using the Motorola S10-HD's and my range got very poor, like while my phone was in my pocket i was getting cut outs. So then I did a "Reset Network" on the iPhone. My range is now around 40 feet without any cut outs!!!

Thanks for the advise steveip4

hi there! does this "reset network" still work? or the "lost connection" problem returns from time to time?

thanks in advance...

Why would it not work? That's a bit of a silly question to ask. Maybe you could try it to see if it resolves your problem instead of 1)replying to a year old thread and 2) waiting on someone to actually respond.

Reset Network Settings fixed the problem! Thank you

Same as everyone else, had about a 4 foot (not meter) range with Jawbone Prime, now it's about 25ft. Even listening to music with wireless headphones through a wall...Before I couldn't get more than 3ft away or put the phone in my pocket without it losing connection to the wireless headphones.
