iPhone does not sync to iCal

I am running version 4.0. Since the upgrade my iPhone does not sync events back to iCal on my Macbook Pro. It does sync the other way--iCal to iPhone, but I need it to do both. I have looked in all the easy places for an answer. I must be missing something. What can I do.

Oh my God, I am stunned. I have been wrestling with this issue since yesterday - iCal not syncing to iPhone. When I look at my calendar on iPhone, it is blank.

I have reset the sync history repeatedly, backed up calendar, deleted and reloaded it, blah blah blah... I just realized that on my iPhone, all of the calendars in the calendar view were deselected/unchecked so none of them were showing up on my iPhone, leaving me to believe the iCal did not sync. The iPhone must automatically default to all calendars unchecked after one of these many operations I tried.
