Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

I've posted a few times here about this issue. My iPhone 4 started acting up over 6 months ago but found I could live with the problem only because smacking the iPhone once or twice on its back temporarily fixed it.

Based on this thread, I suspect at least 5 problems can cause the silent mic input problem. This is probably why different solutions work for different posters. If you read the whole thread, you'll see that many times a "solution" only works for some users while others remain frustrated.

YOU MIGHT AS WELL TRY #s 1 - 4 BELOW IF YOU'RE COMFORTABLE OPENING UP YOUR IPHONE.

(1) Hardware- Proximity sensor problem (touted recently by eboosted but also by many others for at least 6 months in Apple and other threads).

Symptoms include not just dead sound input but also unintended phone-control button behavior, e.g., the mute button activating or the whole phone-control screen changing. This doesn't happen on my iPhone. On mine, all the mics go dead even as the phone-button set stays stable and usable (i.e., I can press and see the buttons change for mute/unmute, speaker phone on/off, etc., as the problem occurs). On my iPhone, the input problem occurs regardless of input: regular-mic-mode, speakerphone, bluetooth-headset, and wired-headset. Still, just for good measure I thoroughly cleaned hardware related to the proximity sensor as recommended by 3 or 4 different users here and in different forums, but it didn't help. Youtube has videos that show at least some of the symptoms of the proximity sensor problem.

(2) Hardware- loose internal screws (at least one of which is related to proper grounding of mic-related component(s)). Some people claim one or more of the bigger internal screws is related to mic hardware.

I tried this once and it didn't help, but my iPhone's problem started about 4 weeks after a tech replaced my iPhone 4 screen, so I thought I should try it again and tighten the screws harder. The first time I only looked for obvious loose screws and didn't tighten any screws hard for fear of stripping them. But about 17 days ago I tightened the bigger screws with much more force (without stripping them, of course) based on a forum post here about an Apple tech tightening all the screws to fix the problem. I also tightened all the other tiny screws firmly but with less force than the big screws for fear of stripping the itty bitty ones (how do Chinese slave laborors at Foxconn handle those little screws?). So far, the problem hasn't resurfaced, but I'll give it another month before declaring victory.

(3) Hardware- SIM card (the first thing Apple did was pass the buck and have AT&T replace my iPhone's SIM card). It didn't help.

I replaced the SIM card twice and have a 3rd new SIM card ready. I don't know if a bad SIM card can corrupt a new phone as described in this forum, but regardless, I would have gladly taken a new iPhone and SIM card from Apple back when the problem first occured (and before I learned that smacking my iPhone restored input). Back then Apple refused to replace my iPhone because it passed diagnostic tests in the store and I couldn't replicate the problem there. Now that Apple is replacing iPhones for this issue, my iPhone's warranty has expired!

(4) Software- Unstable app running in the background.

Not on my iPhone. I've closed every app and turned my iPhone off/on numerous times and it didn't help. I've completely reset/erased my iPhone 4 and it didn't help. If smacking your iPhone restores the mic input temporarily, your iPhone's problem almost certainly isn't software-related. I wish an unstable app was the problem on my phone. Glad some of you fixed yours by stopping and avoiding an app.

(5) Sofware- iOS bug (fixed or encountered after upgrading iOS).

Some people claim the problem went away or started with an iOS upgrade. My iPhone's problem spanned all iOS versions over the last 8 or so months. Also, my Phone's problem appeared while continuing to use an iOS version for months.

==============================================

Apple seems to have several input mic problems. Apple needs to change its mic hardware and software design so it isn't so susceptable to hardware and software flaws and glitches.

FORUM USERS, CONSIDER ADDING HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS FOR THIS FORUM'S TOPIC TO THE ABOVE LIST IF YOU FIND ANY.

22 pages, with 318 replies so far. If Apple doesn't acknowledge this as a known hardware issue today at the store I will not let this go unnoticed.

My Iphone 4 has the same issue. No one can hear me on calls. I can hear them ok and I can make voice memo's. Speakerphone and bluetooth do not work. Facetime appears to work for a minute and then has a static sound and cuts out. I recently updated to IOS5. The problem started immediately after updating to that software. However, I have restored my OS several times. To old updates, started as a new phone and restored again. It has not worked for 2 weeks, testing each restore for a day to see if it was software related.

I am two months out of warranty, however, this very common known issue appears to be resolved by having the phone replaced. If Apple will not honor the replacement today I will be prepared to escalate the issue.

We paid good money for this phone and we love it for all that is does, but if it does not make calls one year after owning it, it is a trash product.

Please let us know how it goes B Sturn. I'm still having this issue with my iPhone. I have tried all the trouble shooting I can stand. In fact I took the sim card out of my iPhone and put it in my old flip phone so that I can at least make calls. My old flip phone is over three years old and works fine for what it is. Ridiculous! Apple seems to have a real problem on their hands.

I had to replace the phone out of warranty for $150 bucks. The "recreated" iphone 4 I bought has a 90 day warranty only. I hope the same thing doesn't happen after 6 months or a year. Oddly enough, I ran into an aquaintance at the very busy apple store who just had to replace her iphone 4 for the exact same reason. Anyway, i'm done fretting about it for now. It is a great product when it works.

I got the same issue with my iphone 4. I can hear people fine, but they can't hear me. Just like Burn S did to his phone. I have to smack the corner where the headset plug into and it work until it die again. Everytime, when I make a call and I started to hear background noise or echo sound. I would smack the phone and it would sound much better.

I took it to the apple store and explain my issue. They didn't even bother to run a test on the phone, they just say this is a hardware issue and the phone will need to be replace. Same situation as Burn S. for the replacement phone. I know there is some many peoples that have this issue and they only finding temporary fix, unless they change out the headset plug unit on the phone.

I have a 3GS purchased in Dec 2009 and have the same problem. It started with everyone complaining they couldn't hear me, line was crackly or muffled or both. (Bad enough that they would terminate the call). It has now progressed to random callers being unable to hear me or anything at all. Not all calls are affected but it happens daily. First thing I did was check the mute button. I tried muting and unmuting, speaker on speaker off, volume up and down, silent switch on/off. I tried closing all apps, tried switching off, tried hard reboots. Updated iOS, (has been occuring over period covering at least 4 updates). I thought it might be reception inside even though I had full bars and it happens outside as well, thought it might be the sim, got a new one, thought it might be the service, changed providers. I haven't taken the phone apart. I guess that is the next step?

I've had nothing but trouble with this phone. Syncs are a drama, iOS5 update was impossible without restoring first. For some reason everything is complicated. It doesn't inspire me to buy another iphone in the future at all.

If you google "tiny screwdrivers" you'll find a plethora of products, e.g,.

iPHone4 kit

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKITIPH4/

general kit

http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=211483990&sellerid=15743316

Of course, the Genius Bar may be easiest and best if you can find a good Apple Genius.

PS My iPhone 4 came with tiny philips screws, not the petalobe screws, so the macsales link above is probably best if you have pentalobes. The kit description states, "...whether your iPhone came with Apple proprietary TS1 'Pentalobe' screws, or standard #00 Phillips screws." By the way, I've bought lots of stuff from macsales.com and consider them one of the best online tech places, mac or pc. They're awesome.

PPS Since you're messing with your iPhone, I highly recommend also cleaning the proximity sensor as many people have recommended and explained. Might as well.

I am currently using 4 iProducts including two pieces of iPhone 4, one having the same issue, I reported it to Apple and got no answer, me & some friends of mine having the same issue, if Apple gives us no answer we may announce a campaign against them and go to the law, beside this we will think twice and more about buying iProducts any more.

Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.
