Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

Thank you for your advice. You've been really helpful. Probably should've googled that myself, sorry. I actually was under the assumption that they are unique to iphones, so pentalobe screwdrivers are not available from retail stores to discourage us from tinkering. I figured I'd have to have a custom one made so didn't search. I appreciate you putting me on track.

I'm going to take it to the genius bar tomorrow and hope that (a) there is a genius on shift, and (b) they can fix it or replace it. If not, I'll order the pentalobe screwdriver from macsales and pull it apart myself. Thanks for the tip re proximity sensor. I'll clean that while I'm there.

Fingers crossed Apple will solve it for me. Stop laughing, I'm trying to be optimistic 😉

I had this same problem with my 15 month iPhone 4. I could hear people but they could not hear me. If I shook the phone then they could hear me for a while then I would cut out again. Everything else on the iPhone seemed to work fine. I took it into an Apple retailer who told me that this was a common problem. After a few days they contacted me to tell me they were going to replace it with a new phone.

Hund, your phone is 15 months old, are you out of warranty?

I am out of warranty, and I am in no way paying to get this fixed or paying for a new phone, this problem should be dealt with by them and they should replace our phones for free. (Of course, I have the same exact problem)

Are they making you pay anything? Let us know how it goes, if they give you a new one or a replacement for free, we could quite possible convince our apple stores to do the same...

Thanks!

Hi DjBoony, I live in Norway where all electrical goods are obliged by law to come with a 5 year warrenty from the producer. A law a number of mobile manufacturers have tried to fight in court several times, each time unsuccessfully. So they either had to fix it or offer me a replacement free of charge.

The reason I mentioned my experience is that this problem seems to be unfixable and as the guy in the store told me, it is a common one amongst the iPhone 4s being brought in for repair. If the user is not at fault then Apple really should sort it out.

Good luck.

Hund,

Well that's definitely helpful. A 5 year warranty, that would cause chaos for the companies in the states haha, I wish we had that here. I'm glad you will be getting a replacement for free, atleast you got some justice for this ridiculous problem that a lot of people seem to be having.

The problem to me is unfixable as I, and many others, have tried everything. But we can only wait and hope for Apple's intervention..

Thanks!

Apparently my Iphone 4 is having the same problem. Voice memo works, but no sound at all when calling. This is happening on speaker and wired headset. I tried restoring, restarting, cleaning up the headphone plug, nothing works. And of course, my warranty was expired a month ago. I will try to go to Apple Store this weekend and hope for the best.

Solution:

If your phone is under warranty, get a replacement for free.

If your phone is a month out of warranty, convince an Apple staff that this is a general issue with the iPhone and get a replacement for free (this is what I did).

If your phone is many months out of warranty, I would still try and convince an Apple staff to give you a replacement for free. Mention this official Apple discussion forum with over 300 posts from individuals, with 190,000 views. If one guy says no, come back to the Apple store another day and talk to a different guy. It's worth a try.

If that doesn't work, it's up to you to pay to get it fixed or to buy a replacement.

In my opinion, Apple should really replace all iphones with this issue regardless of warranty.

It's ridiculous that the phone capability stops working on a device that's supposed to make phone calls.

I have been having this same problem with my iphone 4 for the last 5 months. People can not hear me during calls regardless of using bluetooth or speaker. However, my microphone works when using facetime and voice memos. Also, I can make calls through apps using wifi/3g. I was hoping that it was just a problem with the network for the first month or so (sometimes would go in and out or work for first 30 seconds). But as time progressed it got to the point that no one could here me period.

If you are out of warranty by a large amount then they probably wont replace your phone for free. I tried 2 stores and no luck. If you don't want to fork out 150 dollars to get it replaced then you can start making calls through 3g/wifi using apps like google voice combined with talkaton. I did this for a few days but ultimately decided to pay the 150 to get the phone replaced ( locked into a contract still for another 4 months before upgrade)

I think this is a more widespread problem than apple wants to admit (judging by the size of this conv). I came to apple on an impulse buy (friend bought an iphone 4 and I was up for an upgrade so I said what the heck). Then I found out that I really liked the product and decided to get a macbook pro because I heard good things about it and wanted something that would last. However, when I buy a extremely overpriced item ( compared to competition) I expect it to hold up over time. If the 650 dollar phone stops making calls after only 1 year there is a serious problem. I had planned on future purchases but I am very disappointed right now at how this issue is being handled. I really like apple but I think this is unacceptable.

Guys, here's an update on my Iphone problem. I took my Iphone, which is slightly less than 1 month out of warranty to Apple store today. They looked at my Iphone and thankfully replaced it with a new Iphone 4 for free.

I would recommend for anybody that are having problem with this to take theirs to Apple store ASAP if your phone is still under warranty, or even slightly out of warranty. In the later case, hope for the best.

Good luck!

I'm having the exact same problem. I was 80 days out of warranty and apple said my only option was to pay 150 for a new phone. Instead of doing that, I took it to a third party company to fix it. Every time he would work with it, he said it would work but when we switched sim cards it would stop working for me. To test the sim card, i Placed it in a friends iphone 4 with no problems. Ultimately I went to AT&T and they moved my upgrade date and I got a new phone. That said, this is a big problem. While getting a screen protector for my new phone at best buy, a couple was experiencing the exact same issue. I wonder if apple had a bad batch of ticking time bomb iPhones.

Here's the problem I faced. I have a iPhone 4 with AT&T. I have the latest iOS 5.0.1. When on a voice call the other party was unable to hear my voice. The other party couldn't hear me even if I used the white ear buds that came with the phone or even on speaker phone. All other features of the phone worked. I could even Facetime, record voice memos and use Voice Control. So I knew it wasn't a hardware problem. AT&T installed a new SIM card. Apple had me reset everthing and even do a restore. I even went to an Apple store and an Apple Genius couldn't figure out why only phone calls didn't work. He ran a diagnostics on the phone and everything checked out. His only option was to offer to sell me a replacement phone for $149, since mine was out of warranty. So today I continued my search for an answer and came to this page (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3471947?answerId=16912532022#16912532022) and noticed the little green checkmark under the "More like This" section for "Re: iOS 5 Bluetooth Bug". So I thought to myself, if theres a connection on this page, maybe it is my problem. It was worth a shot at least. So I turned Bluetooth off on my phone and now the other party can again hear my voice again on phone calls. All this and I resolved my own problem and didn't have to spend $149. CRAZY!

Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.
