Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

To all,

The thin paper in the back of the phone is a confirmed fix. True. But why?....

Many theories. Some say it is a bad connection and the paper "cures" the connection. Others say the sim card is not seating and the paper "cures" the connection issue. Others, such as myself say it is the antenna grounding out and cancelling each other.

Regardless, to much bad press makes All corporations listen. Facebook is the consumers new best friend for getting the word out when CNN, FOXNEWS, ABC, CBS, NBC will not.

In case you all have missed it, this very forum has a 165 page discussion on this.

GET YOUR MONEY BACK. I still say antenna issue.

Greubeuld, did you read my original post, have you read all the 26 pages of posts, and are you an employee of Apple? You speak as one trying to change the subject. Thank You for your input Mr. Thread Monitor.

Again, if you paid Apple to replace your phone, get your money back.

Greubeuld, internally, Iphone 4 and Iphone 4s share many similarities.

BOTH Iphone 4 and Iphone 4s users post many times in this thread. The issue, since you so obviously have not read, is related to both phones.

The actual issue is incoming AND outgoing calls mic inop "but" can be alleviated with pressure to the back of the phone in the sim card area.

Iphone mic not working only in calls is true with both phones.

For the Iphone 4 in general.

GDTY.

VLCfluxmaxed,

why are you referencing two theads titled "iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio" (emphasis mine) in this conversation ? (I will not read 165+ forum pages if the subject does not appear relevant to my issue)

As a matter of fact, I have read the 26 pages of conversation and have been following this thread for a long time now. And I have been (slightly) annoyed every time someone posted for a different issue since this makes forum threads that much more difficult to read.

I will return your question : Are you an Apple engineer or where you involved at any point in the conception of iPhone 4 and 4S ? If not I guess your in depht knowledge of the inner workings of the iPhone 4 come from iFixit teardowns so my guess is as good as yours.

You obviously sound very annoyed that your phone is not working, this I can relate to.

Keep in mind this is a user forum and that users are indeed "Thread Monitors" (even though i've had one or two deleted posts in the past by moderators).

Again, you prove you have not read anything. My post on this page a few posts above states my phone is "fixed". Quit trying to change the point I am making.

The point. Get your money back if Apple charged you to replace your phone due to mic issue with phone calls only.

Having both the Iphone 4 and Iphone 4s and taking them both apart and actually looking at the guts. Yes, this is my only expertise.

Quit contributing to the difficult to read issue. The issue is, many people paid $150 to replace there Iphone due to there trust of the manufacturer telling them it was defective.

You are coming off as Pro Apple and seem to agree that it was ok for Apple to try to sweep this under the carpet. Oh, they didn't ignore/deflect/standard answer everyone for the past 8 months on this issue? Proof?

Standard answer seen many times on this thread and many others.

"Better get to the store and get a new phone". More proof?

What does the below statement from update notes mean? Perhaps you know something we all do not. Obviously, the issue is software related as many have already posted on relevant forums there problems are fixed.

"Fixes an issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls"

Where is the explanation for what software was actually updated, what the problem actually turned out to be, what diagnosis methods turned up this incredibly elusive problem. Hmmmm...

Try instead to address my points instead of resorting to lame, ad hominem attacks of whether or not I am an engineer who came up with the Iphone, making statements that are easily proven to be false with previous statements on the same page, and, most importantly, proving yourself to be an "Apple Forum Propagandist". (Also known as, Apple Approved Troll).

I watched your video, and 2 days ago i would agree with your 'dropped the iphone' theory, but i have some new insights which make me favour the theory of a bug. I experienced the same problem with my previous iphone which i did drop (including a more dramatic fall about two weeks ago) and subsequently had it replaced with a new specimen of iphone 4 just 2 days ago. I didn't make calls until yesterday when i found out that the problem reoccured: people can't hear me AGAIN. i've never even had an opportunity to drop the thing. I've done every single thing other people were doing: reset, restore to original settings, made sure mute is not on etc. I didn't use the thin paper tip cuz i dont think it would be covered by warrenty. with my previous phone hitting things worked but don't intend to try it on this new phone. i'm taking it back instead. the whole thing is crazy. best of luck to everyone experiencing the same problem!!

Hello. I had the same problem most people here are describing, with an iPhone 4 32 GB: when making calls, the other party was not able to hear me. If I tapped the back of the phone several times sometimes the other party was able to hear me for a few moments. Today, I also found out that tapping the top where the ambient mic is also made it work for a few moments. The mic worked with recording apps, like Memo or Skype, it was just with calls it was not working. The same thing happened when using the iPhone's headphones or a bluetooth headset.

I think this started happening after I accidentally dropped the phone about a week ago. I have been using this same phone for 1 year, 3 months, and never had an issue like this before (I'm having problems with the home button, but that's another story).

So after reading a few posts on this thread, I decided to try to open the phone, as some persons suggested, and disconnecting some of the cables and connecting them again. I chose to do this as it says on the Apple website my iPhone's warranty is already expired and seeking help with my local carrier (one of the official iPhone carriers in my country, Honduras) would be a dead end. And I had some experience opening and repairing my previous phone, an iPhone 3G, and I had already replaced a broken rear glass panel on this same phone, so that gave me confidence.

So, following some guides on iFixit for opening the iPhone4, I was able to reach the connectors for the headphone jack and the ambient mic. I unplugged those, firmly plugged them back in, reassembled the phone, and tried it out. So far it seems to be working. I have made several calls, and I don't have to do any taps or anything like that. It is working normally so far. I have read that some people who tried this have the problem return after some time, so I'll be testing this out and update this post if this fix is permanent.

I wanted to post this to contribute to this thread and to let other people who might be having this problem know what worked for me.

One tip: if you are going to go ahead and open the phone, no need to do all the steps on the guide at iFixit for doing this. Just remove the rear panel, then the screws over the wifi antenna at the top, remove the wifi antenna and disconnect and reconnect the cables. No need to take out the battery or anything else. And be careful to put the screws back on the same order, on the corresponding place. And try to avoid as much as possible touching any the parts directly with your hands.

Best regards.
