iphone 4, iOS 4
In my case there is clear evidence that my sister dropped the phone as there was a chunk of glass missing form the bottom front - about 2mm deep and 8mm across - (I didn't actaully measure it).
I suppose I could ahve fooled with it - but I figured the chipped glass and no audio might indicate that there were other problems - so the price was a bit steeper than I woudl have liked - but since I "saved" tons of $ by not buying extended warranty on any of the 5 iPhone 4 or 4S units I have in service in my family I suppose I am still "ahead"
Apppple Please fix this probelm. I took it to an iphone repair shop and said it was a software probelm. i don't want to pay 150 for another phone.!
Here is the solution:
same issue here
the only advice that work for me is pushed on back side, but only worked for 10s before it happen again
i believe this is hardware issue.
this is my first apple stuff, and will be the last
high price stuff with poor quality
I have the same problem. I can hear them but they can't hear me. I used the headset and even bluetooth headset but same problem occurs. I am at the Apple store right now. She said she will do a firmware restore. If it doesn't work then I will have to replce it for $160. That's *****. I think I am going to open it up and see if I can fix it myself.
Unbelieveable, this cardboard/paper fix on this YouTube video actually worked for me. Certainly better than paying for a refurb.
I CAN HEAR CALLERS BUT THEY CAN'T HEAR ME!, my phone is 1 1/2 years old and this started about 1 month ago. Everything else works...itunes, mic, etc. Had an appointment at the Genius Bar tonight, they check phone out, said most likely a software issue, went through all the other stuff, no dust, no ear phones causing muting, told me to restore( which I have tried before with no luck) I have been having the same problem... I can hear callers but they can't hear me or they can hear me with static, it goes in and out. I saw post about hitting/tapping phone and that works on and off. Just read the post about cardboard/paper fix and it also worked for me( I have never ever messed with trying to fix anything like this, I'm a girl, watched the video and did it all by myself..IT WORKED. I don't have to buy a new phone.
Started to happen out of the blue to my IP4...watched that vid and thought "No flippin' way!!!" Yep, fixed it! And people say the phone now sounds better than it ever did. Really?!?...a piece of paper??
When you have the back off, remember you don't have to remove the battery...just cut a piece of business card (?) in the angled L shape he describes and place it just to the left of the battery connector (look carefully at his graphic and you'll see it can only be one location) and then (again) carefully slide the cover back down in the direction of the screws as not to shift the paper.
Totally skeptical, but not anymore.
Caller can't hear me, i can't hear caller. Phone automatically thinks its on speakerphone?? Doesn't work with headphones or bluetooth headset!! The paper fix didn't work for me. I have litrally tried everything; tightning screws, removing screws, pinching near headphone jack, replace earpiece, updated ios, downgraded ios, litrally every soloution and non have worked. This is very frustrating as i bought the phone second hand, and is now out of warrenty. I am not sure if i am able to get the $150 replacement due to me never buying the phone from apple?
Can someone please come up with a solution, even if it means soldering on the logic board, i'll try it because an iPhone that doesn't work as a phone is useless. Please help us

This youtube helps me. His method by using the paper board is easy to apply. Works perfect for me.
All,
iPhone 4 1.5 years old.
I honestly believe Apple is lacking in customer service intentionally, knows the answer to this issue, and chooses to ignore it as there solution so far is a win/win situation for them. By not correcting what seems to be a simple problem, they admit no error in phone design. The fix offered is replacement either under warranty or not. The win/win? Apple avoids losing a client to competitors such as android based phones, keeps the client for the remainder of the contract due to costs involved with breaking the contract, or gains a new 2 year commitment via the service provider contract.
I have the sporadic problem where people can't hear me. They always say "static" is heard before my voice goes silent or I can't be heard at all after receiving or making a call. After trying all the fixes such as the paper spacer, starting /stopping iTunes/restarting phone, factory resetting phone, pressure on the back of phone, making sure all screws are tight, the one that usually succeeded in curing my silence during a call was pressure to the back cover?
Mine is not a software problem as physical solutions correct the issue.
After testing the many options above, I noticed a "lever" to the lower left of the battery which is a part of the hold down for the battery connector. This lever also aligns with a "metallic" 1/4" by 3/8" rectangle on the inside of the back cover. I assume this is a back screen anti scratch patch, ground, or tension/distance/pressure/spacer lever? The lever actually sits higher than the remaing profile of the insides of the iphone and is compressed when the back cover is attached. I have no clue why the lever is there but think it is part of the problem? If anyone knows, please comment.
Anyway, I found that while making a call with the back cover off the phone, all could hear me regardless of making or receiving a call. To be specific, no outer shell contact with the inner hardware. After thinking through, the paper spacer makes sense as it releases pressure or completely removes contact of the lever from the backing. My reasoning for suspecting the lever is a tension/distance/pressure/spacer sensor is due to my voice being heard after pressure being applied to the back cover. Some will say the I am simply "reconnecting broken solder connections. I would agree except for the fact that the profile of the hardware is flat as is the back cover and technically, there should be no contact from hardware to cover This would indicate the lever is there to keep the internal hardware from contacting the back cover of the iPhone. So, my applying pressure to the back of the phone shouldnt factor into solder reconnections as there should be no contact and the functional operational oif voice calls with the removal of the back cover eliminates the solder connections reconnected idea.
Further, it would seem since callers and called can hear me once the back cover is removed, the problem is related to "distance" or "contact". I believe the rear phone cover is contacting internal hardware or the battery lever in a way that causes a "bridge" connection that shorts out the "phone" part of the microphone only. Proof of this is the continued operation of the microphone with software such as "recorder" or "dragon dictation" when people cannot hear me talking during phone calls. Further proof is the "static" heard by callers before my voice goes blank indicating interference of either a physical or electrical source.
Possible causes are:
Aged battery. Lithium batteries are notorious for "bubbling" after repeated charges. This would cause contact since the battery is trying to occupy a larger space as it has "grown".
Dropping the phone has "bent" or moved internal parts causing internal contacts.
Antenna shorts? Do the 2 antennas also have separate send/receive designations which would indicate one of the antennas working and the other not due to internal contact? This would support being able to hear callers but not be heard.
Please let me know your results.
Hey guys. Tried the solution. Worked like a charm.
Here's a better video:
I experienced the issue of no audio when my daughter could not hear me (both using 4s), I restarted my iPhone by holding down the on/off button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. Problem was fixed, good luck.

I could honestly climb through my computer and kiss you people! (richard-at-iLabs, tim tones, whitepuppy and rdesrets) It absolutely works! It made sense and the videos help so much. I do not feel confident in my fine motor skills and was not going to be messing with my phone personally. Instead, I called a mobil iphone repair guy and when he got here I explained what richard-at-iLabs explains and then showed him the videos. He was able to easily and effortlessly repair it and said it was likely a $30 job. He refused payment though, stating that it was likely "to make him a lot of money" in the future. Much gratitude to all of you for helping.
An iPhone is an extraordinary piece of technology. Humbling actually. Apple doesn't make anything that's junk. I find it unfortunate the company's exceptionalism is now lost on many who blamed this small flaw (exaserbated by dropping your phone) on the quality of the product. Hopefully, Apple does too. And in all their wisdom, I'm sure they will correct this "small flaw" on the next model. It never need be an issue for future iPhones. Whether the phone experiences a non-negligent drop, or not. It is clearly fixable and Apple should do what needs to be done to solve the solvable.
Hi there,
I am actually facing a similar problem but the difrrence is that i am using iPhone 4s. Well, when i make calls I can hear the people who calls me loud and clear but my microphone seems to be a problem during calls. where people cannot hear me but i can hear them, and at first i thought it was just a connection issues but then after i've tried to call my house to see wether i can hear myself and i call few other people on my phone and they still can't hear me. It seems like my iPhone 4s microphone is not working. but when i tried to record myself on the Voice Memos i could hear myself as the mic is working and i could also talk to siri. Therefore from this i could see that my microphone is actually working but not when i make phone calls. This is really sad for me, i'm thinking to change to other phones but iCloud seems to pull me back to keep on using iPhone. I've been using iPhone 4S since last year November and this problem only happened to me last night. If anyone have the answer to my problem please do share and your help will be very much appreciated. Thank you!
