Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

Hi from Spain, same problem here. Just a point, I've just upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 and first call has worked after a whole week without being able to be heared. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware-level issue and this is only casual, because my test conversation has been 30 secs long and I have experienced a 2 secs mute... But I suggest you all upgrading iOS and test!
Good luck, although I'm visiting Genius Bar tomorrow...

About three weeks ago I got my iphone back from Tech. Serv. and they just said to me that it was a software problem. They only reintalled OS again. As soon as I turned on the phone and do the first call I couldn't hear anything and the person I was trying to talk couldn't hear me either.
I recieved a note from apple justifiying that the hardware was in perfect conditions. Now the phone stills the same, it works properly when it wants and not when I need it.

My wife's iPhone 4 (4 months old) suddenly today stopped making any sound when either making or receiving calls , what i mean to be clear is , you can make a call it connects and there is no sound from the ear piece or speaker and the called party can not hear anything.
It receives calls fine , but again , when you answer the call there is no sounds at all.
Its almost like the mic an speaker aren't working at all, but yet the phone functions perfectly in every other way , WiFi , ipod, email, everything works , and yes when its used to play music or video it works fine ?, just when making or receiving calls no sound at all
In other words Everything works BUT the actual phone , we took it to the local AT&T Store (Waste of time an effort ) just to be given the 800 number for Apple .
Spent an hour on the phone with Apple , tried all their suggestions , did a restore , but still nothing , they say it will have to sent back .
The phone is in Perfect condition , has been in a case from the min it was bought, has never been dropped or exposed to water damage , not even the slightest mark on any part, and as i said , everything works perfect , except for making an receiving calls

I called Apple yesterday to report this issue , an twice more today to find out about the repair ,
I,m getting sick an tired of being bounced around an told a repair is underway , they were supposed to send an advanced replacement phone , an no one can tell me if its been sent , the tracking number , when it should arrive , nothing !

Not happy with Apple support at all,

My wife's phone was having the same problem, just started a week ago. Her iPhone 4 had been working fine for months. Clearly, it's not a hardware problem with the mic, because Facetime works fine with audio and video. Rebooting didn't work. Resetting network settings didn't work. Updating iOS 4 didn't work.

I saw a previous user's post on this thread about having another app running (zippo) that interfered with the mic and decided I would try to shut down all other apps. I knew from my recent experimentation with fast app switching and force quiting apps that unless you force quit an app it will continue running, even after rebooting the phone.

So I went through and force quit every app, made a call, and it worked. (Here are some instruction on how to force quit an app. http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/30/iphone-101-quitting-apps-in-ios-4/ Also note: my wife's phone doesn't have the zippo app, so it wasn't that one.) We'll see how long this lasts. Next time it stops working, though, I'm going to pay close attention which apps are running, and I'll shut them down one by one until the phone works again, hopefully to isolate an offending app.

So is it software or hardware?
I'm sick of trying various methods to solve the problem that only result in me having to do a backup and a restore.
This is ridiculous. Considering how crappy ATT is, you'd think Apple would do everything in its power to make sure the phone worked well. Being able to be heard by the people I call shouldn't optional and I shouldn't have to hope the next software update solves it.

Our problem has been intermittent for the last few days. The error condition happened again yesterday and I had my wife shut down all her phone apps again, but it still didn't work. Surprising, since that's all it took the first time we "fixed" it. So I added one additional step: reboot. After rebooting (with no apps running) it worked again. And it's still working today.

I'm trying to figure out by process of elimination which apps tend to be running when the error condition happens. So far, it frankly doesn't make any sense.

Was just on the phone with apple and the rep suggested that we do a back up and restore of the phone to factory conditions and test it. Of course, the phone is working at the moment, and I'm sure it would still be working after the restore. So this would have only resulted in a false positive (seeming to have fixed the problem). So I pushed back and disagreed about doing the backup/restore, since there's no way to reliably force the error condition in order to test the fix.

After the rep asked whether I think it's a hardware or software problem, I was placed on hold while she went to track down some more information. While on hold, the call dropped. So, I get to start over 🙂

same problem - people can't hear me. Really frustraing. The mic was intermittent for the last few weeks, sometimes cutting out during a call, and sometimes not working all day. Lots of hard resets, shutdowns, etc, but nothing really worked. Also did the restore through itunes which didn't help. Voice Memo worked fine. Earbud mic did not work on calls either. So I tend to believe the theories about the noise cancelling mic having a problem, but the main mic is fine. I got a replacement unit at my genius appt and so far, new phone is good.

Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.
