Screen flickering after Mojave update

I have a MacBook Pro 15" with Vega 20 graphics card that I ordered in mid-November. It's been problem-free since it was delivered on the 20th until today. After I updated to Mojave 10.14.2, the screen started flickering intermittently. The flickering happens mainly when I have graphics switching disabled, but I've seen it flicker even with that enabled. It happens more when I wake up the computer from sleep.

Any ideas what is going on?

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Regardless of using Chrome I had the issue. Now I switched on and off a few settings ("Automatic graphics switching") and quite iPhoto and the problem has ceased for now.

Previously I had also tried both of these but the problem returned:

This has been happening to me, but only when running graphics intensive apps like Steam games, Moonlight game remote gaming or playing my PS4 remotely. All 3 of these started doing the same flickering with a green bar at the top of the screen after I updated to 10.14.6. It's not coincidence, its definitely a software issue with the OS.

I sent a bug report (they call it feedback now) and I suggest everyone else do so here

Hi, I'm fairly new to Mac. I have a bought my first Mac (new) in 2016. MacBook Pro 13" Mid2012. I'm unsure of the correct terminology for what's going on but I assume we are referring to the same thing. I attached a picture below. I recently replaced my optical drive with the manufacturer HD and installed a larger main HD. I then upgraded to the new OS Mojave. I first noticed it after having in my car on a cold day. I though maybe the coldness froze it or something. But I continued to notice it after it stayed in the house and whenever I would startup or wake up, either the window borders would have static or the entire screen like below after boot up. I don't do too much graphic or media on my mac besides a little photoshop, so I assume this is a Mojave problem?? Have you found any solutions?

Thanks, T

Yes I have the same system and mine keeps flickering as well. If I restart the computer it works for a while, then it flickers again.. this is so annoying since I my first generation 15 MacBook Pro was a disaster with the keyboard. And now having flickering issues with this one... You pay all this money and get these issues... It’s ridiculous

In my case, everything is ok with basic Retina display mode in Mojave, but if I changed display resolution with non-Hidpi (2880x1800..ect) after waking up it appears flickering and also Gpu memory keep rising to 100% especially in iPhoto. The default resolution of the MacBook is ok with sleep mode. but if i change non-Hidpi resolution with resolution changing application with vega20 are switched before sleep mode, it appear to be flickering after waking up due to the exterior and the built-in graphics. if I terminate specific application and the graphics changed exterior to built-in and flicker disappears. We should put a little more weight on the software problem.

:(

Another person I've been talking to with this exact same issue (has the Vega 20 MBP) said that the problem must be due to the automatic graphics switching function. The computer switches when it wakes up, that's why the flickering is worse when the computer wakes from sleep (and why, in my case since I always had graphics switching disabeled, that enabling it stopped the flickering temporarily).

Since the problem was introduced with Mojave 10.14.2 I can conclude the issue is software related and has something to do with the graphics driver.

I hope that Apple is paying attention and will come out with a fix for this.

Thank you for performing the test.

I do not know the reason for Peak usage of the AMD, just see it has one.

Why is Mojave doing that I do not know, but it can have something to do with API called Metal (an Apple Graphics program) that is responsible for giving instructions to the GPU (AMD).

We are going to have to wait and hope Apple fixes it, since right now one does not know how to fix it.

Thank you Migum_Snoring.

I too was plagued by the screen flashing problem on a 2018 MacBookPro running OSX Mojave 10.14.3 with Vega 16 graphics card. But your astute observation that it only happened on lower-DPI resolutions proved correct in my case. My eyesight is failing so I'd scaled to 1440x900. But by going to System Preferences / Display / Default for Display the issue has disappeared.

I'm going to give it a couple more days and if it doesn't reappear, submit a bug report to Apple. Much simpler than all the other solutions. Thanks again!

Yesterday I've left my MacBook Air 2018 in service center (the situation is: display flickering during turn on mac and entering to Guest window). finally, they have changed to a new MacBook (conclusion was: motherboard problem). I'm happy bringing new one at home, start to work, release update Mojave 14.4 changed display scale. and everything returns back as it was on the first crushed computer. :( its terrible... do not know what to think, is it coincidence and both of mac books are crashed? I do not believe...

here аs I have guessed 2 reasons cousin this problem. first is Update and second is display scaling. when I reset display scaling to default its start to flickering just in a second during loading home, apple logo becomes on 1-2 second red. and when I have scale display picture is terrible .. on settings default scale resolution it leads better...
