Screen flickering after Mojave update

I have a MacBook Pro 15" with Vega 20 graphics card that I ordered in mid-November. It's been problem-free since it was delivered on the 20th until today. After I updated to Mojave 10.14.2, the screen started flickering intermittently. The flickering happens mainly when I have graphics switching disabled, but I've seen it flicker even with that enabled. It happens more when I wake up the computer from sleep.

Any ideas what is going on?

I get the same problem with Mail. If I click to the desktop several times, then back to Mail, that usually stops the flickering.

Very annoying. Older iMac 2012. Upgraded to Mojave (major mistake), downgraded back to High Sierra. Didn't have the flicker problem in original H.S., but now I do. Probably a remnant of mojave that didn't get deleted in the restore.

Dear Community Dear Apple,

i do have the same flickering problem and invested a **** of a lot of time to get rid of it. Its not chrome for sure as i am using safari and this problems occurs every couple of seconds. The system freeze as well. You can check this when you move continuously the mouse. At one moment depends on the page which i am surfing with my 2016 MacBook Pro freezes the mouse or flickers the screen. I have the strong feeling that certain graphics such as "web base embedded twitter videos", "some video content (except youtube) and "some animated websites" make this flickering happen. It came with an update 10.4.2 and was not in the update 10.4.3 but came back with 10.4.5 and stayed since then. I am using apple beta program but also after a rollback out of the beta program the flickering was there. I did deleted parameter ram and reseted the SMC but it didn't helped.

Come on Apple you can do better than that, i am really annoyed by this flickering. Cant work anymore with this problems.

Please say something please help us and solve this nonsense!!!

Yea I have a 2015 iMac 5K... gorgeous machine that is now useless while the screen flickering is happening. The odd thing, it started doing this during an update on 10.13 but after upgrading to 10.14 it went away until the recent update a month or more ago. I don't understand it. My 2015 MacBook Air is fine and doesn't have this issue. This has to be a software issue and it's come and gone for me.

I have this issue wince Mojave update.

It happens for me with any program that employs hardware acceleration for 2d graphics.

It is most noticable on Chrome and Visual Studio Code. vmware guests are also a very bad problem.

I am using a MacPro 2013 with AMD FirePro D500 3 GB, with a thunderbolt - Displayport cable at 4k resolution.

The artifacts of the 'flicker' are clearly glitches in the processing, lines and blocks revert to the background randomly, sometimes exacerbated by the mouse being at the lower edge of the screen.

If I had to put money on it I would finger the Metal graphics updates.

Hi all!

I just purchased a MacBook in May this year and have since had 3 swaps (4 new computers in total). I have the top spec MacBook Pro 13" and it seems to be failing under basic processing demand - ie, just iMessage open and the screen has problems and I can hear the fan over-working. Very unlucky that I'm on the 4th MacBook since May and this one (just 2 days old) is already showing signs of malfunctioning...

The issue I am experiencing at first sounds similar to the flickering, although I did check some MacBook Air videos where a light is shone onto a screen causing some flickering. This is not the same effect / issue that I am experiencing and it's not related to Flexgate, but rather more to do with phasing or perhaps pixelation? RGB CMYK channels splitting and additionally black and white blocks of pixels (forming small blocks of cubes) are appearing on the screen. I thought that it could be a connectivity thing and then maybe it was the software (basic - Chrome, iMessage, Mail), but the issues seem rather consistent across all 4 computers.

I spent $4k AUD on this computer with the hope to use it close to full operating capacity - on the fly colour correction and music production (just for road use mainly), but I haven't even been able to get past the iMessage stage without the whole thing crashing.

What happened to the Pros being a professional line?

The issues are intermittent and funnily enough, when I have taken it to Apple, these issues don't show up on the system report nor does the report show any issues with hardware. Luckily I've been doing my best to film the issues, so that I don't seem like some crazy girl.

Just to note that the OS is up-to-date and I'm not currently processing any video content or rendering any files.

I am hesitant to take it back to the Apple Store for the 4th time (for a 5th computer).... I feel as though perhaps it is a design flaw?

Any advice? I'm curious if anyone with a top spec Mac Pro (didn't go 15" due to colour and brightness testing better on the 13") is experiencing the same issues.... or any?

Sorry for the novel...

Thanks!

L

Same here! I was watching Netflix, exited and closed my laptop, and a few hours later the flickering started as I opened it again. It’s 2016 Macbook Pro, when I opened it it said it was updated to Mojave 10.14.6 so I think it really is a software issue. I hope this can be resolved because I’ve done all the troubleshooting and it’s usually expensive to repair

I have it flicker on scaled resolution

Switching back to default usually fixes it, then I switch back to the next option up

Running an iMac Retina 4k 21.5-inch, 2017 on Mojave 10.14.6

Just for clarification:

Scaled display appears to cause issue and the increased memory threshold needed to run at higher resolution etc.

On default setting I've seen no flickering

More space I see flickering once or twice a week at most

The highest setting it happens very frequently

I think you're into something, @creativ-george!

I've only experienced this issue when streaming video games from my PS4 or PC. I use a deceased resolution to save on bandwidth when I do this. That would explain why some fullscreen apps have issues but I couldn't reproduce it by watching a video on YouTube in fullscreen.

I'll test it when I get home to confirm

I'm currently on my 5th MacBook replacement and the screen has started flickering again.

I am just using one application - Chrome with about 5 tabs open.

it is an intermittent flicker and looks like a green (mostly green pixels, but some yellow, black and red) bar that runs across the bottom half of the screen.

Not sure what's happening...

Apple "Pro" products....

update: I went to a Genius Bar appointment today and the employee told me it’s not software, that I would need to pay $475 to change my display. The same thing happened to a friend and the flickering still happened even with the new display so she had to get a whole new laptop. I’m just gonna wait until the Catalina update comes out and see if it goes away. We spend so much money on these laptops to begin with and then the repairs are expensive as **** if you dont have Apple Care ugh

I also come across this problem with my mbp 13inch,2018 and my screen starts to flicker occasionally and sometimes there is a stripe flashing by on the bottom of my screen. After noticing this for several times, I went to the apple store, and the worker there replaced my screen.

It seems to work fine just for one day until today the problem occurred again when I walked by my mbp and noticed that sudden stripe flashed by.

I wonder whether it's a hardware-thing or software-thing, and the replacement of screen didn't help.

There are two possible reasons:1. something goes wrong with my graphics card 2. that is the bug of mojave 10.14. And I really wish it's latter and I look forward to seeing this problem fixed in the coming macOs catalina.
