Screen flickering after Mojave update

I have a MacBook Pro 15" with Vega 20 graphics card that I ordered in mid-November. It's been problem-free since it was delivered on the 20th until today. After I updated to Mojave 10.14.2, the screen started flickering intermittently. The flickering happens mainly when I have graphics switching disabled, but I've seen it flicker even with that enabled. It happens more when I wake up the computer from sleep.

Any ideas what is going on?

I'm having this same problem ever since updating to Mojave 10.14.6 - flickering to a white screen on and off. Not helpful during work production as I have to restart the computer. Even after switching from Chrome to FireFox, the flickering still happens. Stats as follows:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

Processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 24 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon R9 M390 2 GB

I just returned my 5th MacBook replacement since May this year and they called me yesterday to find that internal components were missing...

Seems like Apple are slipping up on the production line side of things (having now gone through a 5th replacement) or am I incredibly unlucky?

My old MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) running high Sierra has never had any issues like this.

Really problematic and time wasting (and frustrating) especially when doing graphics based work

I've had this issue before Mojave. I do a lot of graphic design with Sketch and noticed it every time I used the software, then I read about the hardware acceleration switching issue and switching it off definitely helped reduce the flickering. I've switched it off in spotify, chrome and other software. Not sure if there's a default option where it can be disabled everywhere

I just received my 5th replacement back from Apple after repair and they advised they found nothing related to this issue. The computer showed no signs of flickering for the first 2 days and now is flickering consistently every day.

Furthermore, the computer screen goes black completely and won't allow me to brighten it. The touch bar also loses its functionality when this happens, so it becomes impossible to brighten the screen. After about 5-10 minutes the computer goes back to normal.

I'd expect a $4,000 machine to handle basic operation without fault...

I was getting white flickering at least once a day, and it was quite hard on the eyes (and brain). I did everything to try to reduce it with no good results. Luckily with the latest Mojave update and a few Adobe updates, it seems to have stabilized on my iMac. But if I had epilepsy, I wouldn't have been able to use my computer.

Hi All,

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) & last week installed Mojave 10.14.6 (full install). Prior to that I was running the last version available of High Sierra. Just like others, my screen was fine with HS, but have been experiencing flickering with Mojave.

However, I've just tried a few things in this article & the flickering's stopped: http://osxdaily.com/2019/01/16/screen-flicker-macbook-air-2018-workaround-fix/

During the tests the article suggests, I didn't experience flickering when shining a flashlight over the ambient light sensor, but I did notice one brief flicker when changing the screen-brightness from min to max (but didn't do it again on further tries).

The things I've changed in 'System Preferences > Displays' are:

a) Scale the display to a random choice then change back to my usual setting of 'Default for Display';

b) Change Colour Display-Profile to another profile then back to my standard 'Color LCD' setting;

c) DISABLE 'Automatically adjust brightness';

d) DISABLE 'Night Shift'.

I've not restarted since, & have only been running 'Safari' & 'Preview'. My screen's been flicker-free for the last hour since the above changes; I'll report again if any change.

Hope that helps.

Apple, FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT... for pete's sake fix it. I can't upgrade to Catalina to fix the Outlook/Office 365 flickering as I have some important programs I still use that are 32-bit. I'm paying for software that I can't use as the flickering is incessant now in Outlook along with other programs. None of the "fixes" work. I have an iMac, not a laptop.

I have found a temp solution to keep my sanity.

Open System Preferences > Displays > Display > select Scaled

I have this open all the time. When it starts to flicker, I quickly switch from another setting back to Default and it resets.

This is the only workaround I have other than restarting the computer. Upgrading to Catalina isn't an acceptable solution as not all software has changed from 32-bit to 64-bit.

After upgrading to Catalina, I've experienced no flickering on the highest scaled resolution

That's in over a week at a work computer

To put things in to perspective, the company I worked for launched their season just before I upgraded and so the current week with Catalina has been one of my busiest and to experience no issues with the new software to me says the issue has been adressed

I've noticed general slowdowns, slight lag etc, however, no flickering - I've even left my Mac running overnight and resumed using it for 3-4 days straight

I'm hopeful this will the same for other users after upgrading

The only issue I am experiencing is a photoshop one, where when saving as, the old filename extension still remains, so saving a .psd as a .jpg will yield the .jpp overwriting the .psd extension and ending up with a flatenned .psd. I know the issue has already been raised in another thread
