iPhone 4 microphone not working

I have been told that my new iPhone 4 (16Gb) will have to be replaced as the microphone does not work, whatever I do, and despite resets and restores. I can make and receive calls on the speakerphone (with considerable distortion), but the basic microphone does not operate in any application. I have seen some US posts indicating a similar problem, so is this a fault in the new 'phone? It worked semi-OK on the first day I had the 'phone, though people calling me said they were having trouble hearing me, but it gave up altogether on the second. Really disappointed.

Same problem here in Hong Kong.

2 days ago was the new launching of the white iphone 4.

My wife bought it and the speaker is not working!!

Now I know it is a problem happened in 2010-July already,

Apple doesn't learn!!!

My wife is pregnant, she needs to go to the repair store and deal with the extra mess.

What is the point to pay HKD 8$$$ to get suffer?

Thanks Apple!

Hi All,

I bought an iphone for my gf and she was very happy using her new iphone 4 until one day her microphone crashed and no one could hear her even though she could hear them.

Got the phone sent to apple and they immediately replaced it. I put a sim inside and in the middle of my first call, the person at the other end couldn't hear anything i was saying!!! Tried all the tricks but NOTHING!

Have ths same issue. It was intermiant then was all the time 4 vist to apple store 2 replaceent phones later plus 2 O2 store visits and a new sim later still no better. The current phone broke with in minutes of being supplied by the o2 store with out any resycing.

Apple moved my contacts over and thats it. The stores only answer is to replace the phone again. Which im dubious off. 40 mins on the phone to apple care and they are addiment is a cruppt back up or o2 issue when i told themthe phone broke with in mins of being supplied and had a new sim they asked if i want another.

I replied I dont another i want a soloution. I said its obvious theres a issue somewhere and chucking new phones at me isnt solving it???

Im at my whits ends the good thing is the latest replacemtn has not be resynced etc so is as it was given to me by apple. The only things all 3 of m phones have in comman is ios 4.3.2 or higher (the last phone supplied was updated in store on release of ios 4.3.3) and my contacts when ask if a file in my contacts would do it i was told no.

So i ssaid must be you ios nope they said so 3 phones all have the same hardware failure? Again the reply was no. So what is the problem i asked its gota be one ofthe 3

I stated to them a friend and my girlfriend have a iphone 4 one is orange with ios4.2

The over vodafone with ios4.2

Plus the o2 guru tha tried my sim in her phone and hers in mine (my phone replicated the fault as expected) her iphone 4 was on 4.1

And her collegue iphone was on ios4.2.

Yet despite an obvious patten and my upmost to help narrow the issue by keeping my to stock standard(expect contacts, added e-mail accouts and facebook re downloaded via app store on the phone)

They still deney its a apple issue.

The above events span nearly 7 days 5 phones calls 3 visits to the apple store (20min drive each way) and 2 visits to O2 and im still with out a workin despite my best efforts to be as calm and paient as possible while at the same time help narrow down the sorce, which despite my efforts apple care seem to brush off.

One the plus side in store help has been 100% for me. The staff are welcoming helpful as possible understanding listen well anf offer advice as best as they can and i cant fault that. It just seems the issue is beyond them.

And apple care are to keen to pass the buck to the network. Im really stuck what to do as apple can find a soloution and O2 just want to send my phone to apple despite me even pleding with them to swop to a windows7 phone as im getting sick of this with each visit and phone call im losing my trust in apple and its products.

Ok I have the answer! Take a Q-tip pull most of the cotton off then lick it 🙂 I know.... now carfully clean out your head phone jack!

So my mic quit working for videos, facetime, speaker calls. But worked for the memo app. I restored new, restarted and blow all the Mics, and speaker jack out. I then did the Q-tip trick and it worked I can not facetime, speaker call and video my children 🙂 Anyway I think it is worth try, be careful ..........

I'm facing a similar problem with my iPhone4 the mic is a problem, people cant hear me through the mic or even when the speaker is on.

The problem is not resolved by even restoring the phone. Even updated to 4.3.4

The local Apple store is not supporting for replacement / repair as it is bought from Canada but under global warranty.

The lacakadasical attitude of Apple is baffling at best for the company who claims to be the best in the business.

Perhaps each buy should come with a warning of support available only in the country of purchase. Or they should communicate the our Support is as bad as the products are good.

I only hope that I have to travel to another country to avail of my "Global" warranty

I went to the genius bar with my phone assuming I was screwed because I was the second owner. Turns out it was still in warranty, and the genius gave me a new phone.

All I told the genius were the symptoms (mic does not work for phone calls but does work for all other audio apps). He then looked up the serial number, ran a quick diagnostic and handed me a new phone. He didn't even try to troubleshoot the problem (ie make a phone call). This suggests to me that there is a known range of serial numbers with bum microphones and Apple is replacing these phones with little argument.

People with out-of-warranty phones might be well served to go in and try their luck at an Apple store if they can; worst that can happen is they say no and suggest you pay the $200 (US) to swap for a new one.

Ok here is a link to a website I have used to replace all the glass on my phone, they sell many repair parts if you have to take that route along with step by step instrunctions.

Have you tried cleaning your headphone jack with a q-tip yet? I have had to do that twice, and has worked. Take a q-tip put a tiny amount of windex on the tip and then slide it into the headphone jack. twirl it a few times and pull it out. My q-tip was dirty, and my phone when back to working normaly.

Again this website may offer help.

Just in case someone didn't see it in the earlier posts, there is a possible fix (assuming it is the same issue)

Problem: Microphone does not work for phone calls (regular), but works in speaker phone, apps, etc.

Issue: Gunk, dust, debris, etc. is obstructing the noise canceling microphone.

Solution: Find the noise canceling microphone port on the top of the iPhone (4, 4s). It is the pinpoint hole located next to the headphone jack. Using a can of compressed air with straw attached (creates more pressure/force), blast the pin point hole for a few seconds. Check to see if problem is fixed. If your voice can be heard or is muffled, keep trying until the problem is gone.

If this does not work, the problem is most likely another hardware issue. If you're in warranty, good. If not, a replacement can be received for $150 (price quoted to me in Apple Store yesterday 11/23/11).

Best of luck!

@StopNgoBeau. You are a genius. Thank you. My issue was whenever on a call I sounded distant as and far away as if I was talking to them from a bathroom in Afghanistan during a war. But mine wasnt always consitant, apparently I would sound far, then suddenly I'm close again. But when I tested it myself using the Voice Memo app, loud speaker, Skype, FaceTime it sounded normal. That fading in and out voice lead me to believe it might be the 3g towers near my house, so I turned 3g and cellular data off. But of corse the problem was still happening with every call, fading in and out. So i tried restoring the phone, the most painful process is waiting for all the music to back on the phone. And of corse that didnt fix anything.

Then finally tried unclogging the holes using q-tips and cleaning the noise canceling sensor and that worked for me, I rang my friends of which I was doing tests with, and they were glad to finally hear my soothing sound and not sound like I was in the war zone in Iraq. Thanks again guys.

I solved the iPhone 4 and 4S mic problems, i.e. during a phone call, either immediately, or after few minutes, it will drop the call and the person on the other hand of the call won't hear your voice. However, the iPhone built in "Voice Memos" (under utilities) works fine. I am an RF, antenna and electronic engineer and after having no luck with the three visits to the Apple store and Apple tech support, and given that my phone had no more warannty, I did what I did and fixed it myself. I contacted Apple and ask them how they would like to proceed with me posting the solution and providing a training material for their Apple stores such that all their loyal customers can benefit from the fix. I will let you know as soon as I hear from them.
