Ok... I just had this problem for the first time tonight on my iPhone 4S.
The person on the other end couldn't hear me unless I was using the speaker or a corded headset (had it handy).
After unplugging the headset, the mic works again.
Go figure.
Been having thi problem for a couple of days . Got the vacume out, stuck the small attachment on, covered the microphone port and put the machine onto full power and that sorted it out, phone works fine now..
Ok, how about this, I am having the same problem with my iphone 4s - I can only communicate on my calls when switching to speaker phone BUT ONLY WHEN I AM AT HOME.
When I am out and about roaming the streets it appears to work fine. This clearly makes no sense but has been going on for a month now. The only thing that would be different is I would be connected to my wireless hub at home, but how that would have any connection to my iphone microphone not working is beyond me.
I anticipate an amazing solution.
The above video that suprathik posted solved the issue for my 4S. I was able to get the microphone working by pushing on the area where the microphone processor (or whatever) is located, without taking the phone apart. Might not last long, but at least I know what's wrong with the thing. Check the video.
the needle and vacuum trick worked for my iPhone 4, woohoo! http://jayyoo.com/post/13478325843/iphone-4-mic-not-working-stupid-fix
