iPhone 4 microphone not working

I have been told that my new iPhone 4 (16Gb) will have to be replaced as the microphone does not work, whatever I do, and despite resets and restores. I can make and receive calls on the speakerphone (with considerable distortion), but the basic microphone does not operate in any application. I have seen some US posts indicating a similar problem, so is this a fault in the new 'phone? It worked semi-OK on the first day I had the 'phone, though people calling me said they were having trouble hearing me, but it gave up altogether on the second. Really disappointed.

I am having the same problem with my wifes iphone 4 so I took her phone apart and removed her motherboard or mainboard and put it in my daughters iphone 4. I made a few phone calls and the microphone worked normal so I have come to the conclusion that it is the ribbon cable assembly that controls the power button, proximity sensor, and the second microphone which I guess is the noise canceling microphone. I can't see it being any of the other cables. I am going to take the iphones apart again when they get home and experiment a little more but I already ordered the cable on ebay for a few bucks because I am pretty confident that is the problem. I will post back the results.

Well I changed the part and it did not help. Then I took the main microphone on the bottom of the phone off and behind the silver mesh that is over the microphone is some kind of black felt like stuff over the mic. There was some crap on the felt. Like some kind of shiny dried fluid. I cleaned the silver mesh and the felt with a little soap and a toothbrush and put it back together and now it works great. Weird how it seemed to work fine on speakerphone though and not during regular calls. When speakerphone is on it must booth the microphone up real high. Anyways I now have a happy wife again.

SAME PROBLEM AS EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS THREAD.

ALL CALLS MUST BE MADE ON SPEAKERPHONE OR ELSE NO ONE CAN HEAR ANYTHING !

(good luck trying to have a conversation in a noisy environment or a place where you cannot make loud noise, e.g: library, etc)

Hi. I have the same problem. Got my iphone 4 second hand. Kind off ****** about it. It worked great when I used earphones with a microphone but not without the mic. It also worked on Speaker. It seemed like there was something blocking the microphone on the phone. Im trying to clean it off. Good luck to every one else if your having this problem.

Did you try cleaning out the tiny (very tiny) noise cancellation port next to the on/off button on the very top of the phone? Use a can of compressed air to blow it clear. It may take a few shots, and will gradually get better as you clean it until it functions like you would expect.

This may not be the fix to your particular problem (this seems like a symptom for multiple issues) but for me, some gunk clogged the port (I couldn't see that it was clogged, just took a guess) and used a can of compressed air to blow it clear.

If the noise cancellation port is clogged, this would cause the symptoms you would expect: phone can record sound while in an app or can use the microphone during speaker phone mode, but not during regular handset operation. This is because the noise cancellation microphone located in the port is only used during the handset phone call operation mode, and not at any other time.

I had a similar problem with iPhone4 and the mic stopped working i.e. when we make phone calls, the other party is unable to hear. After trying options to troubleshoot the iPhone at home based on guidance from Internet, I finally took an appointment with Genius bar at Apple store. The store mentioned that there are basically 2 mics in iPhone. One is used for voice memos, internet based services, etc. That mic was working but the other mic was not working. The advisor suggested that the mic cannot be repaired and that a replacement handset will have to be purchased as iPhone4 was out of warranty. After paying HKD 1168, I got a new iPhone4.
