I ripped and downloaded several of my favorite personal CDs into iTunes, and listened to them for a period of over one year. Purchased a new iPhone and all those albums have disappeared. Is it possible to retrieve them?

Media isn't included in device backups. It should be kept in your iTunes library, which you should also back up. Syncing with a new device shouldn't remove content from the library. If you don't have a backup you will need to rip the tracks again.
