I can’t send international SMS

I have a new iPhone XS Max with a new carrier, my phone will not send international sms to certain numbers, mainly in the USA. I am in New Zealand.

My my old iPhone 7 Plus worked fine and my new phone restored it’s settings from a new iCloud backup. The numbers / contacts restored perfectly so are in a format that used to work. I can send texts via iMessage but not via SMS. My carrier says there is no issue at their end and I have verified this by putting my Sim into my iPhone 6 SE work phone where it works with no issues so the new Xs Max seems to be the problem. I have verified the carrier settings and reset the network settings but still cannot send international texts, I am at a loss as to what to do next. I can receive sms messages from the numbers I can’t send to.

Here's what I'd try:

Compose a new message and manually key in, in the address field, +1, area code and phone number without any spaces, hyphens et c. E.g. if the phone # is (202) 555-1212 enter it exactly as +12025551212 and enter some text in the text field and send. If it fails, once you get the Not Delivered indication, in the conversation in the Messages app, tap on the label up top and then tap on the info symbol and then tap on the contact name or # and see if the number with the RECENT label is exactly as you entered it. If it's not, delete every conversation in the Messages app that could possibly have that phone # or that contact in it in any way, shape or form and delete every contact in Contacts that has the phone # in any form. Why not if you're otherwise going to restore and set up as new anyway? Then try again.

If you're absolutely unable to send SMS to that # unquestionably formatted even via a new message in a new conversation then the only other thing I can think of to try is, of course, restore and set up as new.

Just curious:

  • You can send SMS to some international numbers but not others including some but not other U.S. numbers?
  • What happens, what is the indication, of such not being sent?
  • Are you sure you're not getting false negatives? I.e. what appears to be unsent is, in fact, not showing as sent in the messaging detail you find when you log on to your wireless account and look at that?

You're welcome and thanks a million to you for your consideration. Gracious! 😀

Last gasp, grasping-at-straws if not outlandish ideas if not already tried:

  • try iOS update 12.1.1 released December 5th
  • try it with both cellular data as well as iMessage temporarily disabled
  • restore a backup from the work iPhone to the Xs on a temporary basis and see what happens

Hi,

I have been in touch with my carrier, the sim works fine in my work iPhone so I'm assuming that the issue is with my new phone, more of a setting problem than an iOS fault.

I'm not blocked by the people who can't receive (It's my parents :-) ) as I can send and receive with no issue when the sim is in the other iPhone.

So far I have checked all settings, as has my carrier rep. Reset my network settings and verified they are correct, which they are. The carrier is stumped now and suggested I do a full factory reset and failing that fixing the issue contact Apple directly. I thought I would try here first.

Thanks

Yes, that's correct.

I can send to some numbers but not others. It's quite frustrating.

The ones that go, go as normal and the recipient can respond.

The ones that don't go hang for a couple of minutes and then the circle with exclamation mark comes up.

I can receive from the ones that I can't send to.

Everything worked fine on my previous phone, the contacts are the same as they are synced through icloud.

When I take my sim out and place it in my 6 SE everything works as per normal.

Well the problem seems to be resolved but I'm not sure why. The main problem number was my Dad who lives in Nassau, He got a new iPhone and sim and had the carrier set iMessage up for him so all now works fine. I updated his contact in my iPhone with his new number and all works as it should but of course this is going through iMessage. The weird thing is that his old phone is still connected and during the period between getting his iPhone and setting up iMessage we were communicating vis SMS on both the new number and the old number.

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that something in his contact details on my phone was causing the problem and my updating it somehow cleared it. It's a bit weird because I deleted it before and started with a fresh contact.

Ah well, It's working as it should be. Thank you very much to those of you that offered help & advice.
