Like said, it all depends on hou you use it. Will it live its life on your living room table and never go anywhere? THen probably no.
Do you plan to take it around with you? Use a stylus with it or have little ones with grubby fingers? THen it may come in handy because once the screen is damaged, it’s damaged. ITs’ not a modular device with bits and pieces that are easily replaced.
You could try to look for other screen protectors. Many models of iPads share the same size and specs. FOr example a 2018 iPad has the same chassis as a 2017 iPad. So you could look up the tech specs for your model, then other models and you may luck out and find a 2017 screen protector on sale/clearance that will fit your 2018 model.
I hope to get a 2018 model and got a 2017 screen protector for $5 at office max.
Cases can be a bit more problamatic, but over all, screen size doesn’t change all that much and there can be more wiggle room to use protectors for other models

Not necessary but if you are rough on Tech Gadgets, consider getting one.
I would always go with one - they cost a lot less than the repair of a screen if an accident happens! There’s some pretty good ones for not a lot of money on Amazon too.
What others said. But anything can happen to $$$$ iPhones and iPads. Sceen protectors one thing, also more important, Otter Box cases, or something. Accidently dropped on hard floor, BAM cracked! But it’s your call.
Thanks so much for your response. I'm not tough on my equipment after what I have invested I don't want to repeat it. Have never used one in the past and question whether I need one now. Retail stores ask upward of $40.00+ which I feel is unnecessary.
