Why does the keyboard appear when I am trying to unlock my iPhone, and how can I get this to stop?

If you have a 4 or 6 digit passcode your phone should not display a full keyboard, only a 10 digit pad. If you have a passcode longer than 6 digits or that contains non-numeric characters you will see a full keyboard.
Just as mysteriously as the keyboard appeared, it went away on its own this afternoon. I did not make any changes to my phone settings. Very strange. Problem solved (at least for now).

I have had a 6 digit password since getting my iPhone 2 years ago, and usually just have the 10 digit pad, as you say. The keyboard just started appearing this week. I’d like to figure out how to stop the keyboard from appearing.
How would you enter your passcode without a keyboard?
I enter my passcode with Touch ID, or directly on the screen if necessary. The keyboard is in the way.
