Safari will not load

When I attempt to load Safari I get the error message, "Safari will not load because of a problem. Check with developer to make sure Safari works with this version of OS X. You may have to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any updates to the application and OS X."

Hey all- thanks for the work around harryhayes! Genius! While it does work, I always wonder what else might be affected down the line by removing that library file. The problem seems to be isolated to Yosemite. So, updating OS to High Sierra (if you happen to have a recovery installation drive for High Sierra) corrects the problem. And frankly, if you're still using Yosemite, I strongly suggest you update at least to El Capitan, as a whole host of security vulnerabilities still exist in Yosemite. And those with a strong stomach can go all the way to Mojave.

I received this same message on my iMac, Yosemite 10.10.5. I did not download the iTunes update like others have. I don't have a recent backup. I can access the internet on Chrome however, usernames and passwords for many sites we are trying to access today are stored on Safari. Having trouble finding where we wrote these down. Any help would be appreciated

Thank you and others who are trying to help us out! Sadly this doesn’t work for me. When I go to Library (Bibliotheek in Dutch), it contains the folders Application Support, Audio, Caches, ColorPickers, ColorSync, Components, Composities (Compositions), Contextual Menu Items, CoreMedialO, Desktop Pictures, Dictionaries, DirectoryServices, Documentation, Extensions, Filesystems, Fonts, Frameworks, Graphics, Image Capture, Input Methods, Internet Plug-Ins, iTunes, Java, Keyboard Layouts, Keychains, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, Logs, Managed Preferences, Messages, Modem Scripts, OpenDirectory, PDF Services, Perl, PreferencePanes, Preferences, Printers, PrivilegedHelperTools, Python, QuickLook, QuickTime, Receipts, Ruby, Sandbox, Screen Savers, ScriptingAdditions, Scripts, Security, Speech, Spelling, Spotlight, StartupItems, SystemProfiler, Updates, User Pictures, Video, WebServer, Widgets.

Where can I find the PrivateFrameworks folder? The Frameworks folder doesn’t contain a mobiledevice file.

I got it to work, went to “Go” , then “All My Files”, then “devices” , (my Mac mini),

then I clicked on it under “name”, then “System” then beneath “System” , then “Library” double click and there are all the files. I moved the mobiledevice file to a folder on my desktop. Safari works again. I thought I had deleted the file earlier - but it was still there.

Deleting the MobileDevice.framework makes Safari work again. Thanks for figuring this out.

However, iPhoto is ALSO stopped working when Safari stopped working, and deleting the folder MobileDevice.framework did not make iPhoto work. Instead I used TimeMachine and restored the folder from a backup from 11th of December. It solved BOTH the problem for Safari and iTunes.

I guess the MobileDevice.framework has something to do with the connecting phones to the computer, off-loading images etc, so I hope this functionality is intact. Have not tried yet.

I believe you are in the wrong library folder. After you find Macintosh HD and open it, there are at least 4 folders: Applications, Library, System and User. Do not open that Library folder. Open System and you will find another Library folder. Open that and you should find the PrivateFrameworks folder. Open that, and you should find the MobileDevice.framework file. That is what harryhayes discovered as a quick fix. Move it to the trash, and hopefully Safari will start for you. I did not have to restart the computer.

When moving the MobileDevice.framework file to trash, I initially had some trouble. I couldn't drag it to the trash icon or just click delete. I ended up opening the trash file, and was then able to drag it into the trash. I like someone's idea of keeping a copy of it on the desktop. The best advice was to upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan, but for now this has saved me for the weekend's work.

Hello. I have the same issue (almost) running Yosemite 10.10.5. I discovered I had a Trojan Horse Virus on my computer, after downloading an anti-virus program that claimed to remove the infected files, I downloaded the software recommended on geek squad and it found no signs of malware. My safari will not open at all. The icon will bounce before I get a message saying "Safari cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."

I'm not the sharpest with Macs. Wondering if anyone can help me.

SOLVED. Thank you. I got help from my own post by Eric Root.

What is interesting, iTunes updated automatically which is not good. My preferences are set for me to approve updates, but this latest iTunes did not respect the pref.s. Not good Apple. So now my iTunes auto updated to 12.8.1.2 ergo this ridiculous waste of time and giving advantage to Chrome and Firefox for people who are not as savvy or have time to go this support board.

Thanks Harry.

Related question and anyone else having this issue?

So now that this Safari issue is solved, when iTunes is launched (see my other comment on this post - updated without my approval), my iPhone and iPad won't show in iTunes. I did not want iTunes updated let alone Mac OS b/c Apple is locking us out and forcing us to buy new (iMHO). Sounds like a great class action lawsuit to me.

Any hope now because I think this update has made my devices obsolete. I have tons of music on my MBP that I want to get to my devices.

MBP OS 10.10.5

iPhone 6 iOS 12.0

iPad iOS 12.0

Restoring the folder /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/ from a backup made by TimeMachine the 11th of December made both Safari and iPhoto work again, including offloading images from an iPhone SE. Also iTunes works normally, including synchronization of music. I think it the "MobileDevice.framework" is necessary for these functionalities.

@frischedk,

I don't have a Time Machine backup. However, I do have backups on an external HDD. Can I just add the path back into the folder? If what you say is true in your post above, then everyone on this post who removed the "....mobiledevice.framework" would be experiencing the same issue of not seeing devices in iTunes. One would think?

<</System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework>>

Dec 16, 2018 10:09 AM in response to frankfromsouth pasadena

@frankfromsouth pasadena

I used TimeMachine and I'm not an expert in backups, but if you have a copy of your older files from before the iTunes update, I think you can simple place a copy of the backup "MobileDevice.framework" folder in the "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/" folder and give it a try.

I agree, I would suspect people who delete the "MobileDevice.framework" to experience troubles interfacing to iphones. Anyone tried connecting an iphone without a "MobileDevice.framework" folder on the Mac?
